The automotive world has begun to make its big nickel move - and many mining companies are about to get very, very popular. Some of the world’s biggest nickel deposits are sitting undeveloped, waiting for the right partners (and the right money), to move forward. And while the big car companies have moved slowly up to now (that’s the nature of the beast), things are clearly changing. They have to. Because there’s only so much nickel to source - and if you’re not in the electric vehicle business in 10 years, you’re not in the vehicle business. You’re out of business.

Battery technology continues to get better and better - because our battery needs keep growing and growing. Now, as the EV revolution takes hold, demands on battery tech has never been higher. In this episode, we’ll look at the future of batteries and ask: what’s driving this surge in innovation; can battery tech meet the demands of an EV revolution; what’s getting battery fans really charged up; and what does future technology mean for nickel and other critical metals? With our sights set on a clean energy future, we’ll only get as far as our batteries will take us. So the question begs, can they really keep us going … and going … and going?

Electric vehicles are the future – and the future is coming fast. By 2030, more than 50% of all new cars sold will be electric - and in that same time frame, the EV market is expected to quadruple to nearly 1 Trillion USD. But what’s most alarming is this: we’re just getting started. So, as the EV revolution goes full swing, can supply keep up with demand? Are there enough raw materials out there for batteries? Will people embrace or resist change? In this episode, we look at all the activity, excitement and trepidation happening in this space, and the role ESG plays in helping keep our moral compass on track.

Unprecedented doesn't begin to touch what happened. So the question is what happened? As a quick follow up to episode 3, we turned to Robert Morris to help answer this question and to give his point of view on what to expect for the future of nickel trading. Bob is an expert in base metals trading in markets and the former vice president of worldwide base metal sales for Vale, the giant Brazilian mining company. Here's some of that conversation:

The electric vehicle/battery revolution is here - and an auto industry that dates back more than 125 years is now being forced to change and adapt on an unprecedented scale. As the automotive world pivots, and supply chains are completely redefined, new “critical materials”, like Nickel, are being prioritised - while at the same time, “sustainability” is reshaping corporate governance and in many cases, innovation itself. Investors are taking notice, recognizing that the rise of EVs represents a once in a hundred years kind of phenomenon, a la the internet - with seemingly limitless potential and opportunities.
(Note: be sure to listen to Episode 4 that addresses Nickel's wild blow up in price, subsequent to these interviews)

As the world goes electric, we’re going to need a whole lot more nickel to build batteries - which means we’re also going to need a whole lot more nickel mining. In Episode 2, we learn how nickel mining can be done properly, relative to our net-zero goals. Sustainable mining has become a reality, built from necessity - and with the recent investments and innovation, we’re seeing this once stigmatised industry now changing: from an obstacle to overcome, to an opportunity we can all embrace.
