This series has been all about sharing advice from some of the women who I’ve worked with or alongside.
Today’s guest is Sally Scott. She is a chiropractor who specialises in pregnancy with over 17 years of experience.
She helped me, she’s helped lots of women I know and love. I recommend her all the time.
She speaks to us today about hypnobirthing, prolapse and recovery, pelvic girdle pain, optimal foetal positioning and shares some general advice if you are pregnant at the moment.

Returning to Work with Alice Darbyshire
Today’s guest is Alice Darbyshire. Alice’s work focuses around motherhood and career, she supports mothers and businesses to see lots of different possibilities and choices.
This is a practical and helpful listen and she will walk you through some of the conversations that will be helpful to have around your return to work after parental leave.
She encourages you to take ownership of the process and ensure it is working for you.
What advice would you give about planning for your return to work after maternity leave?
Be really honest with yourself about what you want. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else and their situation. We all have different levels of support around us. Think carefully about your capacity now, how much time you have, how much energy you have and what you need as a family from a financial perspective.
Thinking about what you actually want rather than what you think you should be doing.
Being really honest about what is possible within your role. Thinking carefully about how much flexibility you could have.
When would you recommend speaking with your manager about your return to work?
As soon as you have any clarity about what it is that you want, start the conversation. You can take ownership of this process. Some managers are brilliant at getting in touch and sharing relevant information, some are terrible at this process. You may need to take the lead.
The clearer you are about what it is that you want the more likely you are to be able to shape it in a way that works for you.
Consider what you will need to be successful. What will you need on your first day, your first week and your first month back.
Finding balance between home and work when returning to work after maternity leave?
It is common for women to take on more of the household tasks whilst on maternity leave. If this works for you, great. It suits most of us. However, when you return to work this will need to be addressed. You will have less time, so you won’t be able to continue as you were before.
Sit down and consider all the tasks that are currently on your plate. What do you want to hold onto? What could be done in a different way, or by someone else?
If you are going to relinquish a task, you need to hand it over and step away. If you want that space, you will need to let it go. This is often easier said than done.

Welcome back to the second series of The Fourth Trimester podcast. For our first episode of this series, I’m interviewing Helen Davenport-Peace. Helen is a Fertility Yoga Teacher and Conception Doula. She supports women on their journey to motherhood too. She is also an expert in teaching and previously was a researcher and lecturer on the subject of education.
We have been working together for the past few months to develop a birth course. We are building something new as we are frustrated with seeing women get shafted. Being sold a dreamy, serene, pain free birth and then being met with something very different. Also where the focus is so heavily on the birth with very little out there about recovery and the Fourth Trimester.
In this conversation we cover a little bit about Helen’s experience of birth and recovery. Why this course is so important to her and her wish for women who are currently pregnant.
It will hopefully be a helpful listen if you are planning your birth at the moment.

This is the Fourth Trimester podcast. A place where we have real conversations about the transition to motherhood and what that recovery phase after birth feels like.
This is our eighth episode and the last one in the first series.
We will be taking a break over the summer but already have some amazing guests lined up for series two that I can’t wait to share with you.
Today’s guest is Gemma North. Gemma has 20 years experience as an actress but has retrained over the past few years in both coaching and psychology. She is in the process of developing a beautiful programme about the roles we play and how we take up space in the world.
In this episode we talk about our experience of postnatal depression and anxiety. We also cover the importance of taking up space. Gemma shares her experience of a c-section birth, societal expectations on mothers and how to put yourself first and celebrate yourself and the amazing things you do every day as a mother.
Thank you so much for listening today. If you have any questions or concerns about your mental health as a mother, please speak to someone. A professional, to make sure you get the help and support you deserve. There is lots of support out there, so please keep asking if you don’t get a helpful response first time. It is possible to make big changes to your mental health.

Our podcast guest this week is Katie Syrett. Katie is a women's health physio based in South Manchester. In fact, she is also my women’s health physio.
She is a wonderful woman, warm, practical and has made a massive difference to me and lots of women I know. I had symptoms for a long time before I did anything about it. Wishing and hoping that it would resolve on its own. It didn’t. After getting some help, I started to speak about it with friends and clients. It has been so shocking and upsetting to hear other peoples stories, what so many of us are coping with. We need to talk about it more.
Katie is brilliant, in this episode we cover;
Katie's experience and why she started working in women’s health
Katie's birth experience and we briefly talk about back to back labour
The physical changes that you will experience in pregnancy
When you should seek some extra support with your pelvic floor
Advice for all women after giving birth
What to expect from a session with a women’s health physio
The main thing to take away from this is that it is never too late to get help, you can make huge changes and see a big difference in your symptoms.

Siân is a dear friend of mine, she is also a client and sometimes a colleague too. We have worked together a lot over the past few years. I am so happy she is on the podcast today, sharing her amazing wisdom.
Siân has a wealth of experience as a hypnotherapist and coach, she has well over a decade of experience and has worked with thousands of clients. She supports businesses with wellbeing and mental health.
Before the pandemic we worked together to develop new ways of supporting women through birth and recovery. As we were so frustrated with seeing wonderful women who were struggling to process a difficult birth experience. We wanted to put something far more holistic, that covered a more diverse range of experiences.
In this episode, we cover processing your birth experience, where to get advice and support if it didn’t go the way you hoped it would. Where to find advice and extra support if you had a traumatic experience.
We also talk about what we feel makes a great birth experience and recovery and the things that really matter.
Siân also covers preparing for birth if you have a more complicated relationship with your body. A history of trauma, rape, self-harm or eating disorders.
Please do share with anyone you think might find it helpful.

In this short extract from my interview with Intuitive Coach, Nicole George, she shares the positive changes that motherhood has had on her relationship with her partner. They struggled in the early stages of parenting. Nicole feels that the big shift came from the understanding that she needs to put herself first, look after herself and not keep trying to give everything to everyone else.
