    Mishlei 15:3 - Hashem's Super-Vision (Part 2)

    Length: 49 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/19/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by raising a problem we missed yesterday which many of the meforshim grapple with. I shared my own approach to the pasuk in response to that problem, then we learned the (fake?) Radak, Ralbag, and Malbim, all of whom take their own approaches to this problem. We came away with some nice ideas, despite our ongoing uncertainty about how hashgachas Hashem works.

    Mishlei 15:3 - Hashem's Super-Vision (Part 1)

    Length: 49 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/18/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning a pasuk which sounds VERY non-Mishleic, and seems to be more fitting for Tehilim, Koheles, or Iyov. We came up with far more questions than I thought - including one based on a Christmas carol - and explored a variety of approaches. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll take stock of what we came up with, then delve into the meforshim.

Mishlei 16:8 - The Superiority of Small-Scale Tzedakah

    Length: 1 hour 39 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (9/16/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we took up concise pasuk about tzedakah and mishpat - and boy did we come up with interpretations: thirteen in all! There was some overlap in some of these explanations, but they all had unique angles or applications. And we only looked at one of the meforshim! I guess we ended up with abundant produce after all!

    Length: 44 minutes
Synopsis: This past Friday morning (9/14/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur (which I forgot to post until now), we refined our analysis of the pasuk from the day before, developing three categories of approaches, each with several variants, and each useful in its own way. I honestly don't remember much of what we covered, so if you happen to listen to the shiur and can tell me what sources I quoted, I'd appreciate it!

    Length: 49 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/12/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began analyzing a "classic" style Mishlei pasuk about the wise, the foolish, and their respective types of speech. The difficulty of such pesukim is to discover the non-obvious, non-cliche ideas therein. We ended up getting a LOT of possibilities onto the table. Tomorrow (בג"הw), we'll refine today's findings under the guidance of the meforshim.

Mishlei 16:7 - How to Recruit Hashem to Make Your Enemies Be At Peace With You

    Length: 1 hour 33 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (9/9/24), in our first Monday Night Mishlei shiur of the 2024-2025 season, we took up a Mishlei pasuk about how to make peace with our enemies. The overarching questions are "What are the parameters of this pasuk?" or, to put it more bluntly, "Under what circumstances is this true?" We ended up with some nice insights into decision-making and some useful strategies for navigating potentially contentious relationships in life. We even learned a nice "derech nistar" (esoteric) idea about how to govern our inner lives!

Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments!

    Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/5/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed what we did yesterday and developed a unified approach based on Metzudas David and Aristotle. We emerged with a VERY practical idea for how to respond when someone is angry at you, regardless of why or whether that anger is justified. We also discussed some nice Mishlei methodology along the way.

Synopsis: This morning (9/4/24), in our first morning Mishlei shiur of the 2024-2025 season, we began the 15th chapter. In this first truncated learnings session (on account of Rosh Chodesh davening) we raised a ton of questions on our pasuk, which clearly has to do with responding to anger, and we suggested a few initial approaches, along with a ton of Mishlei methodology. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll develop these approaches, and see what some of the meforshim have to say.

Mishlei 16:6 - Attaining Atonement the Mishleic Way

    Length: 1 hour 34 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (8/5/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur before a month-long hiatus, we took up a Mishlei pasuk on what didn't sound like a Mishleic topic: kaparas avon (atoning for iniquity). In fact, there's only one other pasuk in Sefer Mishlei that even mentions "avon." We came up with several of our own approaches, then learned through the commentaries of Metzudas David and Meiri, with lots of help from the Rambam along the way!

Mishlei 16:5 - Hashem Hates Haughty Hearts

    Length: 1 hour 19 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (7/29/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we analyzed a pasuk that condemned haughtiness in the harshest terms and followed it up with a perplexing statement whose meaning was not readily apparent. Despite our small crew of only 4-5 Mishlei learners, we managed to come up with some nice ideas - by ourselves and with help from the meforshim. So far, Chapter 16 has been delivering a ton of fundamental ideas!

    Mishlei 16:4 - The Rasha's Purpose

    Length: 1 hour 20 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (7/15/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we - another small summer crew - analyzed an anomalous pasuk about (wait for it) the purpose of the universe (maybe?) and the purpose of the rasha. We developed one totally original approach, then learned the commentaries of the Meiri, Rabbeinu Yonah, Rambam (!), and Rav Hirsch. It was quite interesting to see a philosophical/theodical topic taken up in Mishlei, which imbued the practical applications that emerged with a special gleam.

Mishlei 16:3 - How to Achieve Your Goal [to Hashem All Your Actions]

    Length: 1 hour 34 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (7/8/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we - a small crew this week! - analyzed what appeared to be an extremely fundamental pasuk. Turns out, it was! We ended up learning five solid ideas: three developed by us, one from Rabbeinu Yonah, and another from the Meiri. Every pasuk in Mishlei pertains to decision-making, but this was one of those pesukim which were EXPLICITLY about decision-making as a whole, in addition to being a key pasuk about how to strengthen one's relationship with Hashem.

Mishlei 16:2 - [The Inability to] Know Thyself

    Length: 1 hour 36 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (7/1/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we began a new perek! This pasuk seemed intuitive on the surface, but we ended up with a bunch of related yet distinct groundbreaking ideas about everything from self-knowledge to self-confidence to self-improvement and its obstacles. Mishlei certainly has a way of prompting you to take a MUCH closer look at an otherwise well-trodden idea, revealing new depth and layers of application.

Mishlei 13:25 - How Tzadikim and Resha'im Eat

    Length: 1 hour 36 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (6/24/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned the final pasuk in Chapter 13. This pasuk was incredibly easy to translate, but yielded far more questions than we expected. We came up with several approaches which overlapped with each other and with the meforshim with one approach which was completely different. All of the ideas were practical and shed a new light on an often overlooked quality of Mishleic tzadikim and resha'im. It was a great pasuk to round out another great year of Monday Night Mishlei. Onward to the next perek!

    Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (6/20/24), in our last morning Mishlei shiur of the 2023-2024 season, we continued learning the last pasuk in Chapter 14. After reviewing yesterday's ideas, we then learned two COMPLETELY different explanations - one from Metzudas David and the other from Ralbag, each of whom learned that the pasuk is about a different topic altogether. It's been a great year of morning Mishlei shiur, and I can't wait to resume in the Fall!

Synopsis: This morning (6/19/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning the last pasuk in Chapter 14. We developed one really nice idea which emerged organically from the words in the pasuk and another which is also a nice idea (but whether it is organic or inorganic is questionable).

    Length: 1 hour 41 minutes
Synopsis: Tonight (6/17/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we analyzed what LOOKED like it was going to be an easy pasuk, but it turned out to be quick tricky. (Perhaps we were misled by the intuitiveness of the English version of the Proverb: "Spare the rod, spoil the child.") We eventually developed our own approach, then learned pshat from Metzudas David, another from the Meiri, and a bonus derech nistar idea from the Meiri about how to "parent" our own yetzer ha'ra!

Mishlei 14:34 - Mishlei on National Tzedakah and Chesed (Part 2)

    Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (6/6/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing and refining yesterday's approaches. We then spent the rest of shiur learning the main idea underlying the Ri Nachmias's approach. The overall thrust of the statements of Chazal he cited was that non-Jews are incapable of doing tzedakah and chesed lishmah. On the surface, this seems like a rather bigoted statement. But after we analyzed it, we recognized its truth and profundity and we even managed to develop a nice approach to our pasuk on that basis.

Mishlei 14:34 - Mishlei on National Tzedakah and Chesed (Part 1)

    Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (6/5/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk about CHESED! Why is this such a big deal? Because FUN FACT: the term "tzedakah," "tzedek," and "tzadik" appear in Mishlei a total of 93 times, whereas the terms "chesed" and "chasid" appear only 12. In other words, it's not a typical Mishlei topic. With that at the back of our minds, we began analyzing today's pasuk, came up with some nice approaches, reviewed the Rambam's definitions of chesed and tzedakah, and concluding by reading a mystifying Rabbeinu Yonah. We'll begin tomorrow (בג"ה) with that Rabbeinu Yonah, followed by more meforshim.

Mishlei 13:23 - Poor Victims of Injustice or Mishleic Fools?

    Length: 1 hour 38 minutes
Synopsis: Tonight (6/3/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we analyzed what LOOKED like it was going to be the most difficult pasuk we've learned all year. The questions kept mounting, and I was nervous about whether we were going to emerge with any ideas. Well, much to my surprise, we came away with not one, not two, but ELEVEN interpretations! :O Eight of our own, and three from the meforshim. I believe that's a record ... not that it's a contest. Not only did we strike gold with the quantity of ideas, but also the quality. And we barely even scratched the surface of the meforshim! I'm really pleased with the ideas and the teamwork we engaged in to get there.
