  • In this new episode of Moments of Mood, we're taking a break from guest interviews to dive into another rant, by me. Yep, this time it's the incessant topic of the narrow focus we have around photography equipment...

Creativity beats gear, hands down, all the time. No exceptions. Born from a plethora of comments, messages and questions over years posting images, the most common questions I have received is "what camera/lens did you use" or "what settings did you use for this photo"?. I want to put forward why I'm a bit bored of this being the most popular question and why it is perceived so important for beginners in photography. I was that person, so I'm not judging any individual, more the system and societal constructs we (and the big manufacturers) have created around the sector. It detracts from so much potential beauty and creativity.

Driven by the belief that gear is the key to mastering photography, many photographers today forget that the real magic does not come from expensive equipment, but from the artist's vision, creativity and ability to capture stories. My rant also draws on insights from iconic photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson or Annie Leibovitz, which are great examples of how understanding light, composition and 'moment' will always beat the technical features of a new camera.

Am I wrong to be fed up with this topic now?

  • Platon is a renowned British photographer known for his distinctive portrait photography. He has photographed many prominent figures, including political leaders, celebrities, and cultural icons. His work is characterized by its intimate and powerful portrayal of his subjects, often capturing their essence in a single, striking image. In addition, Platon is also recognized for his significant contributions to human rights activism. Through his work with various organizations, including the Human Rights Watch and the United Nations, Platon has used his photography to highlight pressing social and political issues around the globe.

So then, what happens when a photographer becomes a powerful voice for societal change? Well, in our conversation, we unravel the profound responsibilities and emotional depths that come with capturing culture through the lens. We discuss how he perceives his crucial role of a cultural provocateur and photographers in general as societal ambassadors, focusing on human connections over technical expertise. Platon also shares deeply personal anecdotes, including the emotional struggle of photographing Muhammad Ali, and emphasizes the importance of legacy and having genuine conversations in an increasingly fragmented world.

    Other insights:

how the human capacity for survival and strength is found in authentic human connections;the complexities of political and corporate power and the urgent need for realism;the emotional depth behind Platon's work;Platon's personal observations and experiences throughout his projects;a collective yearning for meaningful stories that resonate and connect people;a plea to urge photographers to commit deeply to their craft;the necessity of stepping out of comfort zones and sharing power;how to contribute to humanity's collective reflection and connection through photography.

Platon is one of my biggest inspirations, and what better way to launch the 50th episode with a heavy-hitting, inspirational conversation with one of the best. Thank you to Platon, and thank you to all of you who listen, it is a privilege to be able to provide conversations such as these. Long may it continue.

  • Pat Kay is a renowned photographer, content creator and now podcast host. So it seemed apt to hone in on the dissonance between art and content creation, and if indeed it's just an illusion.

Pat, with his wealth of experience across various creative domains, also talks frankly about the homogenization of 'art' in today's social media-driven culture. And together we discuss a label transformation from 'artist' to 'content creator' where we can be commercially savvy, without losing the soul of artistic integrity. It's a candid, but needed, look at the compromises needed to flourish in an era where digital presence is king.

We discuss many other topics as well, including the importance of digital assets, business-drivers in photography, the difference between good and great, and the future of photography in general. Pat also shares with me his transition to vlogging and podcasting, and how building a new community in Japan has sparked both personal growth and creative rejuvenation. We touch on the ethical quandaries of contributing to social media and consider our artistic responsibilities amidst the rising tide of AI in creative fields.

  • In this week's episode of The MOOD Podcast, I jumped online with Casey Fatchett.

For more than 20 years, people have been paying him to chase the love of photography. In that time, he's photographed more than 700 weddings, thousands of portrait sessions. worked with big brands, A-list celebrities, as well as many small businesses and regular folks.

His rather playful title as a 'love documentarian' doesn't just embody his work; it narrates the stories of relationships he's framed, from the quiet affections of a golden anniversary to the lively chaos of wedding day bliss. In my conversation with him, we journey through the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of a photographer deeply rooted in the business of capturing, well, love.

Casey doesn't just stop at the click of the shutter; his wealth of knowledge extends to the crucial entrepreneurial spirit needed to navigate the competitive photography scene. For those with a camera in hand and dreams of making it their livelihood, this episode is a goldmine of wisdom, from setting rates to handling the unexpected. We also wade into the deeper waters of social media's impact on our mental health, unpacking strategies to harness these powerful platforms for good, without letting them dictate our self-worth.

Stress, boundaries, and the courage to utter a clear "no" are lifelines in the high-stakes game of professional photography. As creatives, we often blur the lines between work and passion, but as Casey shares, managing anxiety and setting non-negotiable limits is what keeps the love for the craft burning bright.

  • Today I talk with Matt Costello in the studio. A fan of his underrated work for a while, Matt really showed us where his style and voice emanate from in his artwork, helping him transform negative core beliefs and take the path of healing through his creativity.

Have you ever felt like an experience or a passion completely altered the trajectory of your life? Matt, a photographer with an incredible story of transformation, shares how his journey behind the lens has been a powerful force of change. From capturing the raw emotions and stories that punctuate human life to finding personal salvation through the click of a shutter, his tale is one of passion, healing, and self-discovery. We traverse the globe from the scenic views of New Zealand and the reality show of Project Runway to the vibrant streets of Cologne, discussing the transformative power of people, art and the challenges of intertwining one's creative passion with the practicalities of running a business.

Matt opens up about his own struggles with trauma and how embracing feminine energy through his work brought about a sense of healing. By fostering authentic connections and trust with his subjects, he crafts images that go beyond the surface, capturing the essence of strength and vulnerability. It's a heartfelt discussion on the emotional impact of photography and the delicate process of creating art that respects and uplifts the human spirit.
