    DR. HENRY JENKINS is the Provost Professor of Communication, Journalism, Cinematic Arts and Education at the University of Southern California. He arrived at USC in Fall 2009 after spending more than a decade as the Director of the MIT Comparative Media Studies Program and the Peter de Florez Professor of Humanities. He is the author and/or editor of seventeen books on various aspects of media and popular culture.

    Jenkins is the principal investigator for The Civic Imagination Project, funded by the MacArthur Foundation, to explore ways to inspire creative collaborations within communities as they work together to identify shared values and visions for the future.

  • In this episode of The Nature of Story podcast, Michael Neelsen speaks with Lucas C. Parra, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, City College of New York, CUNY.

    LUCAS C. PARRA is Herbert Kayser Professor of Biomedical Engineering. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in 1996 with research in the area of machine learning under the guidance of Gustavo Deco. Prior to joining CCNY he worked on medical imaging at Siemens Corporate Research (1995-1997) and acoustic signal processing at Sarnoff Corporation (1997-2003).

    Lucas' current work revolves around "reading and writing the brain: electric stimulation, brain signals, machine learning." He studies the effects of external stimuli such as movies, TV shows and video games on the brain.

  • In this episode of The Nature of Story podcast, Michael Neelsen speaks with Dan Yashinsky, Toronto oral storyteller and author of "Suddenly They Heard Footsteps: Storytelling for the Twenty-first Century."

    DAN YASHINKSY is a well-known Canadian storyteller, author, and community organizer. He received, in 1999, the first Jane Jacobs Prize to honour his contributions as a storyteller to enhance Toronto’s cultural life. He also received a 2009 Chalmers Arts Fellowship from the Ontario Arts Council. Dan founded the Toronto Festival of Storytelling (in 1979) and co-founded the Storytellers School of Toronto. He also began the longest-running open session in North America: 1,001 Friday Nights of Storytelling (in 1978).

    Dan has an M.A. in Sociology in Education from the University of Toronto, and a B.A. in Literature from the College of Creative Studies, University of California at Santa Barbara.

He has degrees in mathematics and economics from San Diego State University, a Ph.D. in economics from University of Pennsylvania, and post-doctoral training in neuroimaging from Harvard. He also serves as a senior advisor to Finsbury, a global leader in strategic communications that advises many of the world’s most successful companies.

She is the author of several books, including “The Story Factor,” and “Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins.” She lives in Greensboro, North Carolina.
