  • Your running cadence is the pattern or number of steps you run per minute. Increase your cadence and you’re halfway to running faster. Lengthening your stride is the other half of the equation, but doing that can be problematic.
It’s far more effective to focus on quickening your feet.
    Let’s explore why.
On today’s show, I’m going to dive into your running cadence. I’ll go over:

why focusing on your cadence can be an important tool for gaining speed with lower injury risk,

some myths about the ideal cadence for runners, and I’ll explain

a few techniques for improving your cadence to help you get faster quicker

  • In our time-crunched hustle culture, sleep is often the first thing that is sacrificed in our busy lives. Even though, by far, it’s the absolute most important thing we can do for our health and fitness.
So how do you know if you’re really getting enough?
    Let’s find out.
On today’s show, I’ll be talking with triathlon and sleep coach, Simon Ward. We’ll go over

Simple strategies for improving sleep quantity & quality

How to know if you’re really getting enough, and

How to set the stage for sleep success, even if you have kids

Simon is a British triathlon coach and has been for nearly 30 years, but he no longer calls himself that. Instead he’s a life coach for people who run, bike, and swim, because it takes a lot more than good training to be your best.
And great sleep is one of those things.

  • If you’re only running and expecting to get better at it, you’re missing out. You’ll simply be getting better at working around your weaknesses rather than truly improving.
And if you’re over 40? You’re going to have to do more than just run to keep your bone density, improve muscle mass, and keep your metabolism humming along. Not to mention improve your performance.
You might think a little strength training and mobility are the answer. But it’s a lot more nuanced than that.
On today’s show, I’ll be talking to one of America’s leading running physical therapists, Jay Dicharry. Jay works with Olympians and other world class runners to improve their biomechanics, performance, and helps them build back after injury.
He’s out with the second edition of his book, Running Rewired in which he takes cutting edge research and creates precision workouts any runner can do at home to supercharge their running form.

  • A lot of people use running to lose weight.
And some people lose weight to get faster at running.
This is the concept of “race weight.” And while it can work temporarily, it can be very, very damaging.
But yet, it’s still tempting runners every day.
On today’s show, I’ll explore the nuanced and controversial subject of race weight and losing weight in general with running. We’ll explore:

    The science of race weight

How losing weight while training can backfire on physical and mental health as well as performance, and

I’ll share my story and what really matters more than getting ultra lean.

  • “Lift heavy” is common, but often bad advice for runners. Runners actually want to do runner-specific strength work.
Except…”runner-specific” strength training doesn’t really exist.
Confused yet? Let’s sort this out.
On today’s show, we’ll untangle confusion around strength training for runners with the help of strength and running coach and physical therapist, Victoria Sekely.
    You’ll learn:

Exactly what lifting heavy means for runners, and if you should even try it

How your strength training should change over the year, depending on your goals, and

How to time your workouts so they support your running, instead of hurting it.

Victoria is the owner of Train Smart Run Strong, a New Jersey-based doctor of physical therapy and running coach. She trains runners all over the world with her strength training programs, with the goal of keeping them strong, healthy, and training well.
This is the second time Victoria has been on the show and I’m delighted to have her back.

  • One in four American women suffer from some kind of pelvic floor disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health. That's 25% of us! And yes, that number goes up as we get older.
And running can trigger accidents and make it worse.
And this is not just a female phenomenon. Men have a pelvic floor too and can also have issues. Most guys certainly aren’t talking about it!
Some people are so ashamed, embarrassed, and downright fearful of leaking that they choose to quit running all together.
I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way. I’ve brought on pelvic floor specialist and international coach, Baz Moffat. You’ll learn:

Why pelvic floor issues happen and increase as we age and especially when we run,

What the signs are of a more serious problem and, most importantly,

The surprising ways to strengthen the muscles to prevent leaks and incontinence in the first place (and it’s not kegels!)

Baz is a former member of the rowing team for Great Britain and she is a prominent voice in the women’s health movement. She is a co-founder of the Well HQ whose mission is to challenge the status quo for women in health, fitness and sport.
This is a powerful conversation for anyone who has a pelvis and unless you are like Baz and study this for a living, I promise you will learn something brand new that you can apply today.
The other thing I want to say is that this topic doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom! Baz has several great tips on making pelvic health more normalized and dare I say it, even fun.
Be sure to stay tuned all the way to the end of the episode for the Mental Strength Minute to fortify your mind in 60 seconds or less.

  • Des Linden is not your typical marathon champion.
Instead of emulating others, Des blazes her own path. Some might say that she even prides herself on not doing things like everyone else. And when someone tells her she can’t, she figures out a way to prove she can.
Des is a two time Olympian and became the first American woman in 33 years to win the Boston Marathon on a brutally cold and rainy Patriot’s Day in 2018. At age 39, she is still competing professionally and will be toeing the line at Boston again this year.
Welcome to the Planted Runner. I’m Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition.
Today I’m sharing my conversation with Olympian Des Linden. You’ll learn:

Some of the stories behind her historic win in Boston

How her training has changed as she has gotten older, and

Why she keeps showing up in the sport when some would say her best years are behind her.

Des has written a memoir of her life and incredible career called “Choosing to Run.” In it she shares the behind-the-scenes of her amazing accomplishments, some of which she’s never told before.
We also talk about why she’s always felt like a little bit of an outsider in the professional running scene and why she wouldn’t have it any other way.

    🏃🏼‍♀️Struggles with hard workouts

Learn how I create a custom 14-week marathon training plan for the Berlin Marathon.

Follow along with the questions I ask each runner:

    What is your goal?

How long have you been running regularly?

Do you have any current or recurring injuries? What are your RECENT (past 6-12 months) race times and distances? If you have not raced recently, but have in the past, please estimate your race fitness. If you have never raced, or not in a very long time, please estimate how fast you could run 1 mile (1.6km) as fast as possible.

How many miles or kilometers per week do you typically run (do not include race weeks or taper weeks)?

What is the highest amount of weekly mileage you've ever run and how long ago was that?

How long is your average/most recent long run?

What pace would you say is a very easy effort, relaxed pace for an average run? This is a pace so slow that you could talk the entire time almost as easily as walking.

When do you want to run and rest?

What are your favorite and least favorite kinds of running workouts?

Do you strength train and/or cross train?

“Have really been enjoying you discussions on training. Being an older runner I can see the errors I have made in my training by now understanding your approach to training and how you prescribe that training. Not to mention what a great vide you offer with your love of running. Will continue to listen and learn.”

  • If you are ready to get better results from your training plan, there are three ways to do it.

how these variables affect your training, and

How to know when it’s time to pull the next lever.

  • Welcome to the PR Training Lab! Go behind the scenes with me as I create a custom training plan for one lucky runner.

In this episode, we feature Ginger:
    🏃🏽‍♀️41 years old
    🏃🏿Goal 5k time: 23:42
    🏃🏼‍♀️Struggles with pre-race nerves

Learn how I create a custom 8-week training plan for a Ginger’s hot August 5k race.

     What do you struggle with?
