“Fundamentalism” - Is that a good word or a bad word to you? For some, it represents an ideology that they believe must be embraced and defended. Others recoil from it because they associate it with pain, heavy-handed leadership, harshness, and sometimes even abuse. Still others associate the term with Islamic extremism that plays out in acts of atrocity.
In the Christian realm, it is a term that is increasingly polarizing. Why is that?
Unfortunately, for many, the word “fundamentalism” has taken on a meaning that is significantly different from what it historically represented. What did it mean originally? What has it come to mean over time? More importantly, what philosophies were instrumental in re-shaping the very concept of “fundamentalism” away from its original moorings?
In this latest episode of The Unvarnished Truth Podcast, our hosts, along with special guest Dr. John VanGelderen, explore the answers to these questions and more. Part of our discussion references an article written by our guest, which you can find here.
Even if you’ve found yourself recoiling from the term “fundamentalism” because of what you think it means today, you may find that you embrace what it originally meant!
