Catechism means to teach or instruct. It’s teaching biblical doctrine in summary form, typically through Q&A format.
Scripture:
Luke 1:4, 1 Corinthians 14:19
Shai Linne’s Jesus Kids Album
Possible to do with young children:
Requires no preparation. We’re reading the question and helping our children learn the answer. The answers are scripted.
The questions aren’t asked to test our children, but to teach them.
Repetition is helpful and crucial
It’s a helpful way to introduce Christian doctrine to our children in a digestible form. It’s like giving them milk (1 Cor. 3).
Our Method:
Write the catechism question and answer on the Chalkboard
Short - 5-7 minutes
Simple - go phrase by phrase and accentuate words. We’ll stay on a phrase until they learn it and then we’ll add to the answer.
Specific - we proactively state number of times we’ll rehearse the question and answer. We ask the question and have each child recite the answer that number of times. After the final time, we’ll break into a dance party to cheer them on.
Rhythm - Weekdays work on new question. Weekends we rehearse questions previously learned
Steph does Catechism and candy. She creates an obstacle course, have them go through it, select a number and they do the catechism question.
Catechism Options:
Truth & Grace
Westminster Shorter
New City Catechism
