Her career journey is a fascinating one, touched by grief and a sense of sometimes not belonging, and she tells her story articulately and with great warmth.


    Nick Beggs shot to fame as part of Kajagoogoo and has enjoyed a highly successul career since, across musical genres. His daughters, Willow and Lula, formed the Beggs Sisters, and Nick will be playing with them at The Stables on 24th November. Hear Nick and Willow talk about being a family band, existentialism, the importance of neurodiversity in creative pursuits and, of course, Lamahl.

  • Soothe the post summer holiday blues with this lovely episode of Turn Up The Volume. Nigel Planer and Henry Normal are coming to The Stables for an evening of poetry, stories and much more. Nigel is perhaps best known for his role in the Young Ones and has enjoyed a prolifically successful West End career. Henry is the creator behind The Royle Family and the Mrs Merton Show and played a leading role in household favourites such as Gavin & Stacey and Alan Partridge. Hear them talk to Nick about their careers and their absolute love of poetry...


    Vonda Shepard was the voice behind the multi award-winning series Ally McBeal, creating the theme tune, as well as producing over 500 tracks for the show. She is also a wonderful, soulful singer songwriter with a fantastic catalogue of work behind her. She's a great listen, for fans and non-fans of Ally alike!


    Seckou Keita plays the incredibly complex instrument, the Kora. He writes and performs disarmingly beautiful music. He take Nick on a journey through his West African heritage, his European influences and his passion for the music of his childhood.

  • Some amazing interviews in this latest edition of Turn Up The Volume! from the Stables in Milton Keynes. Nick chats to comedian, writer and broadcaster Dom Joly about his book, The Conspiracy Tourist, and his show, The Conspiracy Tour, which is coming to the venue in September. Dom is absolutely fascinating in this interview, exploring how conspiracy theories are created and then take hold. Who propagates them? What is going on in their world that means they find comfort in them? Can you feel sympathy for conspiracy theorists? And how does all this translate into a comedy show?!


    Danny Beard - winner of Drag Race UK - is a wonderful performer, and also an incedibly articulate voice when speaking about prejudice and homophobia. His wide-ranging interview with Nick is insightful, thought-provoking, funny and moving.


    And Nick Cope, former lead singer of the Candyskins, explains how he has become the country's finest exponent of indie music for three year olds, while also reminiscing about the Thames Valley indie music scene he grew up in, spawning bands like Radiohead, Supergrass and Slowdive.

    Karine Polwart is a multi-award winning singer from Scotland. Proud of her local musical heritage, passionate about her community and her environment, her songs ask the questions she is seeking to answer about today and tomorrow. She is coming to The Stables with pianist Dave Milligan, in what promises to be a wonderful evening of songwriting craft.


    Del Bromham has lots of stories to tell! Founder of Stray in 1966, he has always enjoyed huge critical acclaim, which has not always been matched by commercial success. But he has always stayed true to his roots, and grown a loyal following over the years. He will be joined for an evening at The Stables by Argent's John Verity. This is a great interview, full of Del's trademark humanity and authenticity.


    Another Stables favourite, The Slambovian Circus of Dreams, is coming back to the venue this month. In another wonderfully engaging interview, Josiah and Tink take Nick through their unique journey, eschewing major record deals, while building a reputation as a superb live band. Quirky, engaging, honest and funny, this completes a trio of great listens in this month's episode.

Mary is a true troubador, writing perfectly crafted Americana songs about life, death, love and loss.   • Welcome to the December edition of Turn Up The Volume! from The Stables in Milton Keynes, bringing you, as ever, in-depth interviews with the artists you can enjoy at the venue in the coming weeks. Peter Cox will be coming as one half of Go West in December, and then returning next year with a solo show. Nearly 40 years since the release of "We Close Our Eyes", Peter talks at length in a lovely interview about the early days of the group, the incredible success they enjoyed, the difficult second album, breaking through in the States and his own solo career too. All this while surrounded by packing boxes having literally just moved into his new home!


    Nick then chats to the wonderfully engaging Mari Wilson, who is bringing her Christmas special to The Stables. They talk about beehives, 80s success, the tricky jazz audiences, writing an Emmy winning track in 36 hours and how to manage a huge ensemble like the Wilsations. When other groups had two members, they had anything up to 12!


    Finally, Nick looks ahead to this years Christmas treat at The Stables, as Noel and Antonia, from multi award-winning theatre group Box Tale Soup talk about their gorgeous production of Hansel and Gretel - a Christmas reworking, fit for all the family.

  • Three brilliant and varied upcoming artists at The Stables sit down and chat with Nick in this latest episode. China Crisis are marking the 40th anniversary of Working With Fire and Steel by playing the album in its entirety at The Stables. Eddie and Gary talk in depth about the early days of the group, growing up in Liverpool, still living at home when they became successful, the challenges of making their first album and the story behind Working With Fire and Steel. It's a fascinating extended chat.


    Isabella Coulstock has just been supporting The Who this summer. She has her first headlining gig at The Stables on Stage 2. Her interview is also a great listen - she is a really talented young artist and an extremely vibrant interview guest. Her story about how she came to support Nell Brydon on tour is enough to make listening to the whole podcast worthwhile! Alison Young, Head of Programming at The Stables also chats to Nick to give some of the history behind Stage 2, which showcases emerging and unsigned talent.

Judy Collins is now 84 years old and her latest album, Spellbound, sees her telling stories of her life in more intimate ways than ever.     Richard Coles is bringing his one-man show to The Stables. Now free of the shackles of the BBC and the Priesthood, he opens up to Nick about his time in the Communards, dealing with grief, what status means to him, and how he is managing his "de-vicaring" and life after the BBC.


    And rounding off an amazing trio of guests, Maz O'Connor sings live for Nick, and talks about her gorgeous new album "What I Wanted" and her constant search for connection and a clear sense of her creative and personal identity.

With IF:Milton Keynes International Festival starting in the next few days, Nick sat down with the wonderful Roderick Williams to talk about the piece of music he has created for the Festival. It is called Forever? and it marks the 250th anniversary of Amazing Grace, which was written in Olney. With words by Rommi Smith, the piece will premiere at the Festival on July 22nd.


    Roderick Williams is one of the world's greatest opera singers. Passionate about accessibility to the arts, and bringing opera to the masses, he has had an amazing year, not least thanks to his major role in the Coronation of King Charles.


    In this extended interview, he talks to Nick about the Coronation, about opera and the arts, and of course about Forvever?
