For Episode 15 of the UNSUNG podcast, Mixed by Jocelin and Matt Soczywko were joined by mixing & mastering engineer & founder of Schwabe Digital Ryan Schwabe at Kensaltown East studios in New York.
As an engineer, Ryan Schwabe has been nominated for 2x GRAMMYs and worked on multiple Gold and Platinum selling records along the way. After Ryan released his first artist project, he received lots of praise on the mixing and mastering of the project and clients began approaching him to help them mix and master their own projects. While building studios and teaching as a professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, he continued mixing and mastering projects on the side, slowly building relationships with an eclectic network of clients across different genres. Some of those projects began getting acclaim, then in 2021 "Planet Mad" by Baauer that Ryan co-mixed was nominated for a GRAMMY. Ryan's second nomination came in 2023 for mixing and mastering "Adolescence" by BAYNK.
While mixing "Planet Mad" for Baauer, he became frustrated with the lengthy 4-hour-long process of running specific stems through his hardware rack, printing them, then having to re-import them back into the project at the same level. He figured there had to be a quicker, more efficient workaround, and after some homework and a lot of back and forth with a developer, Schwabe Digital's first plugin was born. After receiving praise on Gold Clip from other engineers, Ryan decided to release it and launched Schwabe Digital in June 2023.
In this episode, Ryan discusses building a client base independently, working across different genres as an engineer, being nominated at the GRAMMYs, Ryan’s musical journey: from his beginnings as an artist to building studios/teaching at Drexel University, to becoming a full-time engineer and founding Schwabe Digital. He also covers his approach to mastering, the development of Gold Clip and Schwabe Digital's next plugin, NAMM, and his encyclopedic knowledge of recording technology, OEK sound, Soothe 2, Highfall, delivery standards for streaming and Atmos, Ryan’s take on Atmos, why Ryan started making plugins, his approach to running Schwabe Digital, building and developing Orange clip, what Gold Clip actually is, future plugins from Schwabe Digital, analyzing audio gear to inspire new plugin ideas, Ryan’s goals, mixing with your eyes vs. your ears, casual vs. active listening and Isomorphic Mapping, and the beginner’s mindset.➡️ Follow Ryan on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ryanschwabe_/

For episode 13 of the UNSUNG podcast, Jocelin and Matt Soczywko were joined by Devvon Terrell also known as Help Me Devvon at Kensaltown East studios in New York.
Devvon Terrell is an artist, content creator, and mixing engineer from Brooklyn, New York. He is also one of the hosts of the My Studionerds podcast. He began making music at 17 and decided he would make it his career during a formative experience at college. In his early days as an artist and singer, while peers took traditional routes to promote their music like getting their music to DJs for radio play, Devvon began doubling down on social media instead, releasing a string of viral covers and remixes on his YouTube channel Devvon Terrell. One day he uploaded some educational videos he recorded breaking down the production and mixing techniques in his music to a brand new channel and put it to one side. Months later somebody recognised him in public from those videos and he discovered the channel "Help Me Devvon" had accrued 20k subscribers and tens of thousands of views. He resumed creating content for the Help Me Devvon channels and today the brand has accrued over 35 million views, launched a podcast, and even released a collection of plugins. In this episode, Devvon discusses the podcast strategy for My Studionerds, learning to produce and mix in the no information era, splitting time between Help Me Devvon and Devvon Terrell, Devvon's projects as a singer, his first artist deal, being a graduate in 2008, getting his first studio, On The Radar Radio, UK and US rap, the Help Me Devvon plugins, developing plugins, creating content for Pro Audio companies, speaking candidly about sponsors and their products, what would tempt Devvon away from Pro Tools, asking for the project file instead of stems as an engineer, the role of the mix engineer and more.➡️ Follow Devvon on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/helpmedevvon➡️ Watch the My Studionerds podcast - https://www.youtube.com/@HelpMeDevvon➡️ Listen to some of Devvon's Music - https://open.spotify.com/artist/4WcJL1x8azi1Qkv4jc6fhH?si=eX_MV37tRxa40zcMpfPwSw➡️ Learn more about Audiomovers - https://audiomovers.com/?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=Content&utm_campaign=UNSUNG_HelpMeDevvonTimecode0:00 - 0:47 Intro0:47 - 2:45 Devvon’s launch strategy for the My Studionerds Podcast2:45 - 4:00 Why the episodes run for 30 minutes4:00 - 5:24 Why Devvon promotes other creators in the space5:24 - 8:02 Devvon’s other projects as a singer8:02 - 10:21 Learning to produce and mix in the era of no information10:21 - 12:10 Splitting time between Help Me Devvon & Devvon Terrell12:10 - 14:42 Devvon’s journey into engineering and production14:42 - 15:59 Devvon’s first artist deal15:59 - 16:18 Being a graduate in 2008 (The Global Financial Crisis)16:18 - 17:14 How Devvon got his first studio17:14 - 18:57 Devvon’s involvement with On The Radar Radio18:57 - 20:55 Jamal Edwards20:55 - 22:02 Lord of the Mics22:02 - 22:22 UK Rap getting global recognition22:22 - 23:44 Jocelin’s Grime Clash 23:44 - 30:49 UK and US Rap30:49 - 32:52 Devvon’s plugins32:52 - 34:11 Developing plugins for Windows vs Mac34:11 - 35:14 Being a small independent plugin developer35:14 - 37:01 Design and Language in Devvon’s plugins37:01 - 38:58 Rosetta EQ38:58 - 39:53 The God Particle39:53 - 41:40 Devvon’s approach to product videos41:40 - 44:36 Speaking candidly about sponsors and their products44:36 - 47:14 What would tempt Devvon away from Pro Tools?47:14 - 48:59 Asking for the session as an engineer48:59 - 52:48 The role of the mix engineer52:48 - 1:01:17 Approaches to mixing1:01:17 - 1:02:18 EndUNSUNG is a podcast from Audiomovers. For episode 7 of UNSUNG host MixedByJocelin and producer Matt Soczywko jumped on a call to chop it up with a slightly under the weather David Yungin Kim (not that you'd know it) direct from his room at Chalice Recording Studios in Los Angeles.GRAMMY-winning and multi-platinum mix engineer David Yungin Kim has been instrumental in crafting the sound of contemporary hip-hop. His close collaboration with Nas on the King's Disease series won the legendary rapper his first GRAMMY, while Kim’s sonic fingerprint and deep understanding of West Coast engineering techniques can be heard on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, and Nipsey Hussle's Racks in the Middle. Above all else, David is known for his open and transparent approach - regularly putting aspiring producers and engineers on game on his Twitch streams. More recently David has moved more into the production realm.
