  • About the Podcast

Welcome to When Burnout Becomes Reality, a podcast that uniquely blends personal experience with the science of burnout. I'm Shannon Swales, your host and a caregiver professional who has not only lived through burnout but also possesses scientific knowledge and skills to treat conditions like burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.

**You can discover more of my story through reading my memoir Nothing Left to Give: A psychologist's path back from burnout www.burnoutpsychologysupport.com/buy-my-book

    Development of the Podcast

I started this POD out of my own burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma experience. I noticed how great connecting with others who got what you were going through felt. It helped me feel less alone in it. It helped me to feel understood and unbeknownst to them; it helped me learn from the wisdom they had gained to help me recover and grow. This is why I continue to showcase lived experience guests on the POD. As I healed from burnout, I moved back into my work as a psychologist, and that is when I added the scientific knowledge aspect into the POD, having expert guests like myself share their wisdom to help others. I also share my burnout, recovery, growth story from the beginning until now and everything in between.

So there you have it. I am incredibly proud of this POD and enjoy every minute of producing it. It is a twice monthly (since May 2024) podcast with an episode released on the first and third Thursday of every month. It comes in visual (YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqCrY3G2neqQLELtnzc566w) and audio formats (available wherever you listen to podcasts - go to www.burnoutpsychologysupport.com/podcast for links). Each month, we will endeavour to showcase a lived experience guest who courageously comes on the POD to share their raw account of burnout, compassion fatigue and/or vicarious trauma to recovery and beyond or an expert guest, including me, who shares their knowledge and skills in this area of caregiver burnout. All episodes are hoped to assist others in preventing, responding and growing from burnout.

  • In this episode, I had the privilege of engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with Shannon Bowman, the driving force behind Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling (see more about Shannon below). Our in-depth discussion centred around a crucial subject - worker well-being within the organisational context. We explored common pitfalls that workplaces often stumble upon, inadvertently contributing to poor well-being outcomes for workers. Drawing from Shannon's extensive experience, we examined real-life examples of organisations' successes and triumphs, shedding light on effective strategies for preventing burnout and other adverse outcomes. Furthermore, our conversation unravelled the intricate challenges and rewarding benefits associated with implementing psychosocial safety measures within organisations. We navigated through the complexities that both employers and employees encounter when striving to create a work environment that fosters mental health and overall well-being.

Guest: I'm a passionate mental health professional and a pioneer in therapeutic approaches and business innovation. As director of Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling, I lead a team of skilled professionals focused on improving the well-being of our community in Geelong. We are particularly proud of our work with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), which has profoundly impacted our clients' recovery journeys. My dedication to improving others' lives earned me an Achievement Award from the Geelong City Council - an honour that recognises my efforts as a therapist and entrepreneur. I continually introduce new, effective treatment methods and business practices to our psychotherapy and counselling services. Beyond therapy, I actively share my expertise on mental health issues through various channels such as podcasts and discussions. I also speak at workplaces to share insights on enhancing employee well-being and resilience. As a testament to my resilience, I have used my personal experiences with disabilities since birth as a driving force to surpass conventional limitations. Through my work at Create Balance Psychotherapy and Counselling, I focus on accessibility and inclusivity, reflecting my commitment to enriching society and offering compassion to those battling psychological challenges. She shares with us the common challenges people face trying to incorporate REST into their schedules and practical takeaway steps to overcoming them. • Ep 26 allows the listener to learn from Clinical Psychologist Rebecca Black about two important areas associated with burnout: chronic illness - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Fibromyalgia, & Unrelenting Standards Schema. Schemas are mental structures of preconceived ideas, a framework representing aspects of the world, or a system of organising & perceiving new information. Rebecca blends her lived experience in both areas with her experience as a schema therapist working with people with chronic illnesses & chronically stressed states such as burnout. She shares her knowledge & tips on noticing & moving away from unrelenting standards & breaking the chronic stress cycles of living with chronic illness. She teaches us a sustainable way to live.

Guest: Rebecca is a clinical psychologist & coach who has spent the last 15 years of her life grappling to understand & overcome her chronic illnesses (CFS and fibromyalgia) & burnout experiences - a mission that she has accomplished! Rebecca is now passionately dedicated to helping other therapists & health professionals move away from these experiences and towards creating a sustainable career and life - one that is balanced, joyful, energetic, abundant & fulfilled - so they can in turn pass this gift of sustainable living on to their clients too.

  • About Episode and Guest

Some of you may find yourself struggling with an inner critic, a critic that likes to tell you that you are not enough - you are not a good enough psychologist, doctor, teacher, partner, friend, etc. A critic that judges you and leaves you feeling guilt and shame, further debilitating your health and well-being and impairing your functioning. The good news is compassion is an excellent antidote for our inner critic. Compassion is noticing suffering in self or others and taking action to alleviate that suffering. Compassion, particularly self-compassion, is vital to help support one's overall health and well-being, including preventing, recovering and responding to burnout.

In this episode on compassion and burnout, I interviewed Dr Hayley D Quinn, a coach for women business owners, clinical supervisor for therapists and helping professionals, trainer and clinical psychologist. Hayley is the founder and host of the podcast Welcome to Self® with Dr Hayley D Quinn. Hayley assists women business owners in changing how they relate to themselves and their work through the lens of compassion, so they can build more sustainable ways of working and businesses that thrive and live the full and meaningful lives they desire and deserve! Hayley strongly believes that thriving women create thriving businesses.

I first met Hayley during my postgraduate studies, where we studied clinical psychology. Fast forward several years when I reconnected with Hayley in the capacity of supervisory support and development in Compassion Focused Therapy. Hayley holds a special place in my heart because her support allowed me to flourish and grow professionally and personally. She is one of my compassionate guides. She showed me what it means to be compassionate to self and others. This is why I had to have her on the pod to share her wisdom on compassion and how it can assist you with prevention, recovery and growth from burnout.

  • Episode 21 of Burnout Psychology Support (formerly known as BURNOUT: A Different Kind of GAP Year) Podcast focuses on the challenges of returning to your work/career post-burnout. It will focus on my journey from leaving my career as a clinical psychologist, unsure if I would ever return, to making the steps back. It will also infuse elements of scientific knowledge to help support others who find themselves at this point or are fearful about taking that break from their career.

I genuinely believe that it is through sharing experiences that we learn, grow and connect.

  • Episode 20 of Burnout Psychology Support (formerly known as BURNOUT: A Different Kind of GAP Year) Podcast brings you the burnout to recovery experience of Population Health Lead Eva James.

Sitting down with Eva to hear about her burnout and recovery experience was a pleasure. Like me, she took a 'time-out' (aka GAP) from her work to help support her health and well-being. However, unlike me, her experience was compounded by grief and loss.

Eva shares her signs that she was burning out, how she decided to prioritise her care (which wasn't easy) and how she went from feeling disconnected from herself, others, work, and life to reconnected.

I believe it is through sharing experiences that we learn, grow and connect.

  • Have you ever been told you are 'sensitive' or maybe even 'too sensitive'? I have, one too many times. If you answered yes or even know someone who has, this episode is for you.

Last year I met this episode's expert guest, Becky Corbett, a registered holistic nurse and sensitivity expert. I was a guest on her podcast called The Gentle Living Nurse, where I talked about my sensitivity and burnout experience.

It was through Becky that I recognised I am a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and that being an HSP had contributed to my vulnerability for not only burning out but the other mental health battles I've had since I was a young adult. It was life-changing for me.

HSP is someone who has a central nervous system that is more sensitive to physical, emotional and social stimuli. As Becky explains in this episode, this can create many challenges as the world is not set up for an HSP.

Becky draws on her research and experience (personal and professional) to help the listener understand, recognise and respond to one's own or another's HSP trait to help maintain their well-being.

I learned so much by sitting down and interviewing Becky, and I am sure you will too.

  • Episode 18 of Burnout: A Different Kind of GAP Year Podcast brings you the burnout to recovery experience of a business owner, husband and father, Glen.

Looking back at his burnout experience with the wisdom he now has from his recovery offers you a unique perspective of the signs that contributed to his burnout, things he didn't or couldn't see at the time. Things like not resting, not prioritising self-care, pushing through, doing it on his own, and not setting boundaries, to name a few.

It took hitting 'rock bottom' at a point of hopelessness and a timely Facebook advert to send him on his road to recovery and beyond to where he is now, thriving.

  • Episode 15 of Burnout: A Different Kind of GAP Year Podcast brings you Heart Place Hospital creator and champion Jacqui O'Connor's (aka "love rock star" and "hope merchant") burnout to recovery experience.

Jacqui takes us on a journey from a busy nurse, nurse manager, mum and wife who believed she was hitting all the culturally appropriate success markers to the 'mack truck' moment (aka burnout) that set her life in a new direction. As she describes it, she went from an "unhealed healer" to a "healed healer".

One thing you are bound to love about Jacqui's burnout to recovery story is how she tells it. She has a way with words that allows for a deeper understanding of what life was like for her in the thick of her burnout and how her life is now...magical.

  • Episode 14 of Burnout: A Different Kind of GAP Year Podcast brings you the burnout stories of two remarkable women, one of whom experienced job burnout (higher education industry) and the other mum burnout. Together they have created their movement based on sharing their own and others' resilience stories on their podcast and life happened. You can follow them on Instagram @and_lifehappened.

Jessica and Samantha openly share their separate burnout to recovery experiences in this episode. Jessica shares the negative impacts of a toxic work colleague, the wave-like nature of her burnout, the difficulties accessing therapy during the peak of the pandemic in the US, and walks us through some of the therapeutics strategies that have helped her to recover. On the other hand, Samatha shares how her expectations of what she envisioned motherhood would look like contributed to her burnout, how she navigated her challenges with getting and engaging in support, and how instrumental this support was to her recovery once she found what she needed.

Together their stories showcase the individual differences experienced amongst individuals suffering from burnout, but the similarities cross-overs that are common amongst burnout to recovery experiences. I hope you find this episode helpful in your journey through or preventing burnout.
