In this gripping episode of Wild Things & Wild Places, Todd Redmond and Bryant Birch recount an unforgettable elk hunting expedition that turned from triumph to tragedy in the blink of an eye. Deep in the backcountry, 30 miles from the nearest trailhead, the duo's adventure was marked by stunning scenery, an encounter with a massive grizzly, and the thrill of dropping a trophy bull elk. But the beauty of the wilderness quickly gave way to a fight for survival.
As they were retrieving their elk, Todd was unexpectedly kicked by a horse, turning what should have been a celebratory moment into a harrowing ordeal. With sheer drops surrounding them and miles of rugged terrain ahead, the situation became a race against time to get Todd the medical attention he desperately needed. Despite the severity of his injury, Todd's stubborn determination led him to believe he could make it out on his own. However, this moment of stubbornness cost them precious time and put his friends at even greater risk as they struggled to get him the help he desperately needed. A Blackhawk helicopter from Cheyenne was ultimately dispatched for the rescue, highlighting the dangers that even the most prepared hunters can face in the wild.

In a deeply moving episode of "Wild Things and Wild Places," Sheridan Chief of Police, Chief Travis Koltiska, joins us to honor and remember Sgt. Nevada Krinkee, a fallen hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. This episode is not only a tribute to Sgt. Krinkee’s dedication and bravery but also highlights the efforts being made to honor his memory and support the community he loved.
On February 13, 2024, the Sheridan, Wyoming Police Department faced an unimaginable tragedy when Sgt. Nevada Krinkee was shot and killed while serving his community. Sgt. Krinkee was known for his unwavering dedication and passion for helping others. Before joining the police force, Nevada served with distinction in the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, completing two tours in Afghanistan.
Nevada’s legacy of service extended beyond his military and law enforcement careers. One of his greatest joys was helping children. Nevada left behind a loving wife, Karla, and a 6-month-old daughter, Bella. His dedication to his family and community will never be forgotten.
