Douglas Stuart, Booker Prize-winning author of Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo, is celebrated globally for his heartbreaking, funny and moving depictions of working-class life, identity and resilience.
Born and raised in Glasgow, Stuart’s fiction draws heavily from his own experiences growing up as a gay man in Margaret Thatcher’s Britain. His debut Shuggie Bain received worldwide acclaim for its searing portrayal of poverty, addiction and one young boy’s tumultuous relationship with his mother in 1980s Scotland. It was heralded as a masterpiece by many critics, and received the Booker Prize in 2020; to date, it has sold over a million copies.
In his second novel Young Mungo, Stuart returned to the streets of Glasgow to tell an equally compelling story of vulnerability and strength. This coming-of-age tale delves into the forbidden love between two young men, set against the backdrop of sectarian violence and familial expectations. Similarly critically acclaimed, the book cemented Stuart’s place as one of today’s most compelling literary voices.
In February 2025 Stuart joined us live on stage to discuss his literary journey, the inspiration behind his award-winning novels, and his insights on writing honest depictions of marginalised worlds rarely seen in the literary mainstream.
With the respected production company A24 set to adapt both novels for the BBC, Stuart also discussed the process of bringing his characters to life on screen.

There's often an unspoken (and deeply misogynistic) rule on country music radio: never play two female artists back to back. In this episode of Switched On Pop's country week, we aim to do just that. Looking at two artists on opposite ends of the country music spectrum – traditionalist Lainey Wilson, and genre-bending Jessie Murph – Nate and Charlie try to understand the state of female country through their respective songs "4x4xU" and "Blue Strips."
Songs discussed:
Lainey Wilson – 4x4xU
Jessie Murph – Blue Strips
Lainey Wilson – Country's Cool Again
Lainey Wilson – Heart Like A Truck
HARDY, Lainey Wilson – wait in the truck
Jessie Murph – Gotta Hold
Jessie Murph – Gucci Mane
Jessie Murph, Sexyy Red – Blue Strips (Remix)
Zach Top – I Never Lie
Carrie Underwood – Before He Cheats

Today’s electronic treat of an interview features DJ/composer and technologist Robert Henke AKA Monolake. He is a German computer music artist working in the fields of audiovisual installation, music and performance. Born in Munich, and now lives in Berlin.
Many of his works use multiple channels of audio or are specifically conceived for unique locations and their individual properties. For the past few years, he has been exploring the artistic usage of high power lasers in his installations and performances.
As Monolake, Robert’s minimal, dub-influenced techno helped establish the sound of the Chain Reaction label in Berlin. Most famously, he helped to develop Ableton Live, and designed the Atlantic Waves software for performing live with other producers in different countries simultaneously.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the futuristic technological and artistic world of Robert Henke.

For this week's bonus, Riley, Hussein, and November discuss some recent UK news where one of Britain's most tendentious morons has been trying to claim that the Met Police are in cahoots with Hamas somehow and people are expected to take this seriously. We also discuss recent Tory and Labour talking points about replacing sick notes with apps and how apparently people on Statutory Sick Pay have had it too good for too long. This episode nearly broke November and also prompted her to call Hussein 'the South London Guy de Maupassant,' so you'll have to take the good with the bad.

One, two, three. Atlético Madrid had not lost at home in LaLiga in 25 games, but Barcelona smashed them 3-0 on Saturday to extend their own unbeaten streak to 10 matches and become the first team to beat Atlético at the Metropolitano in the league since... Barcelona in January 2023.
Sam and Toni reflect on Barça's good run, which has now included wins over Napoli and Atlético, Robert Lewandowski's form, players stepping up with others injured and increased intensity in training. Rik then joins to give his player ratings ahead of a full return to action later this week.
Finally, Sam and Toni look on a Champions League draw, which has opened up for Barça -- as long as they can eat their fish -- and the resignation of the club's vice president of finance Eduard Romeu last week.
