Heilsa og forvarnir gegn sjúkdómum hafa lengi verið okkur hjartans mál. Þrátt fyrir að líftími fólks hafi lengst undanfarna áratugi, hefur fjöldi heilbrigðra æviára dregist saman. Við erum lengur veik með skertum lífsgæðum og lyfjanotkunin ein sú mesta í heiminum. Getur það talist eðlilegt að flestir séu sjúkir á einhvern hátt? Lítum í kringum okkur, þekkjum við einhverja fjölskyldu þar sem ekki eru einhver veikindi á ferðinni? Getur það verið eðlilegt að með hverju ári aukist fjöldi þeirra sem fær sykursýki, krabbamein, Alzheimers-sjúkdóm, Parkinsonsveiki og sjálfsofnæmissjúkdóma eins og Multiple Schlerosis, gigtarsjúkdóma, Chrons-sjúkdóm, skjaldkirtilssjúkdóma og aðra bólgusjúkdóma? Er eðlilegt að á hverju ári deyi mörg hundruð manns af völdum hjarta- og æðasjúkdóma? Og er eðlilegt að við tökum inn lyf fyrir milljarða til að halda niðri einkennum þessara sjúkdóma en ekki að takast á við orsakirnar og lækna þá?

Þessir sjúkdómar sem við nefnum hér hafa verið kallaðir lífsstílssjúkdómar. Hvers vegna? Jú, vegna þess að þeir þekktust varla fyrr en á 20. öld og ef þeir þekktust þá var það í mun minni mæli en á okkar tímum. Þessi sjúkdómar fara nú fremstir í flokki sem orsakir dauðsfalla í heiminum en um 70 prósent dauðsfalla á heimsvísu stafa af þeim. Á Íslandi er hlutfallið um 90%.

Hvernig getum við snúið þessari þróun við og stutt líkamann í að viðhalda heilbrigði ævina út?

Það er ótrúlega góð tilfinning að vita að maður sjálfur getur haft áhrif á heilsu sína – að maður sé ekki bara eins og korktappi úti á rúmsjó sem hefur ekkert að segja um það hvert ferðinni er heitið. Að maður getur virkilega haft áhrif á það hvort maður veikist eða ekki. Við sækjumst flest eftir aukinni vellíðan, orku, heilbrigðu útliti og síðast en ekki síst að geta verið við góða heilsu með börnum okkar og barnabörnum eins lengi og kostur er. Þess vegna skiptir máli að huga að lífsstílnum.

Í þáttunum ætlum við að bjóða upp á fjölbreyttar og fræðandi umræður um allt sem tengist heilsu og heilbrigði, kafa djúpt í heilsutengd málefni og heilbrigðiskerfið og spyrja gagnrýnna spurninga. Fjöldi feitra lifir þó heilbrigðu og hamingjusömu lífi, óháð holdafari sínu.

Offita er nú skilgreind sem alvarlegur og víðfemur sjúkdómur. Við þeim sjúkdómi hafa nýlega komið fram læknisfræðilegar lausnir svo sem þyngdarstjórnunarlyf og efnaskiptaaðgerðir.

Ber þá feitu fólki þá skylda til að fara á lyf eða í aðgerð fyrst það er hægt? Hvaða áhrif hafa þessar lausnir á fitufordóma og átröskunarsjúkdóma? Eru þær líklegar til að draga úr offituvandanum eða auka hann? Og hvaða afleiðingar hafa þessar lausnir til langframa? Er alltaf betra að vera mjó?

Brynhildur Björnsdóttir er 56 ára kona sem hefur verið feit alla ævi. Hún veltir þessum spurningum fyrir sér í þremur útvarpsþáttum ásamt ýmsum sérfræðingum og fólki með reynslu af því að grennast með hjálp lyfja og aðgerða.

Beware Book shines the light on a spate of vicious murders which shocked Glasgow between 1991 and 2005. Eight women involved in prostitution were killed, and at least four of those cases remain unsolved to this day. Many of these women were left defenceless in a more ruthless city than the one we know today - one grappling with unemployment, crime and the growing grip of heroin. Distrustful of authorities and fearing for their safety, they turned to each other for protection, sharing warnings about their most dangerous clients in a tattered leather journal they called the “Beware Book”. The night before Halloween 1975, 15-year-old Martha Moxley was found bludgeoned to death outside her family’s home in the tony Greenwich, Connecticut, enclave of Belle Haven. The local police, used to dealing more with traffic stops than a high-profile murder, grappled with a lack of forensic evidence – or a motive. They had their suspects of course. The creepy neighbor. The eldest teenage son of the Skakel family next door. The Skakel children’s burly tutor. But without concrete evidence or a confession, the case stalled out. For decades, it remained unsolved and it seemed like no one would ever be charged with her killing. But then, a series of improbable events involving, among others, Dominick Dunne, William Kennedy Smith, and Mark Fuhrman, compounded to deliver the public a new suspect – 39-year-old Michael Skakel, who’d been 15, like Martha, at the time of the crime. The arrest made national headlines – and not just because Michael Skakel was an accused killer. He was also a cousin of the Kennedys. Skakel’s 2002 high-profile murder trial was a media feeding frenzy. Reporters wondered – would this rich, privileged son of a scion get away with it? Despite flimsy evidence and witnesses with questionable backgrounds, a jury convicted Michael. For many, it felt like a fitting end to the Moxley case. Finally, justice was served. Sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, Michael Skakel, who’d always proclaimed his innocence, fought for his freedom. In 2018, his conviction was overturned – and prosecutors declined to re-prosecute. Innocent in the eyes of the law, Michael remains guilty in the eyes of many. Where does the truth lie? Dead Certain: The Martha Moxley Murder, is an immersive, fresh take on this infamous case. The series is hosted by veteran journalist Andrew Goldman, hired a decade ago by Skakel’s cousin RFK Jr. to research a book about the case. But after the book was published, Goldman found he couldn’t let it go. New episodes every Tuesday through January 20, 2026.

Hi, I'm Rick Glassman, and I'm a goofy guy and a cute boy. As a kid, I had debilitating OCD. I still have a lot of “things.” The title of my podcast “Take Your Shoes Off” is a microcosm of my need for control and order in a world that... keeps their shoes on.

I created this podcast to showcase a more serious side, as I have conversations with some of the funniest and most interesting people in the world. I’ve learned the language of comedy in an attempt to survive this shoes-on world, so of course there will be some goofs and spoofs, but think of this podcast as you being a fly on the wall, as opposed to being an audience member in a theatre.
