    It can be easy to think that tackling burnout means taking on even more—doing more to “fix” the overload. But sometimes, the most productive thing we can do is just the opposite: take a beat, step back, and breathe.

    Put Yourself First to Be More Productive Later
    It took me years to realize that productivity isn’t about squeezing in more tasks—it’s about recharging first. When you prioritize your own well-being, you become more effective and make fewer mistakes in the long run.

    A 15-Minute Walk Can Shift Your Mindset
    A quick walk can be a game-changer, especially during a busy day. Imagine going through your toughest week but building in a daily 15-minute walk without your phone. This small habit changes how you approach each task, making you feel more centered and less reactive.

    Small Moments of Mindfulness
    If taking a big break seems out of reach, start with smaller moments. Try breathing deeply while your lunch heats up or as you wash your hands. Moments like these give you a chance to reset, even when everything feels nonstop.

    Don’t Wait to Recharge

  • One thing I love about property management is that every manager has a story that starts out, “You’re never gonna believe what happened at my site…”

    Storytelling has the power to teach, to change and to connect us. Through storytelling, we have the opportunity to learn from the experiences of others without having to go through those same struggles ourselves. 

    By listening to stories, we can see how different people have navigated challenges and come out on the other side stronger and wiser. 

    Much of what we do in property management cannot be taught through a textbook. There is no manual or procedure for how to keep your cool when a resident is besides themselves. And yet, one of the most valuable skills a manager can have is the ability to stay emotionally regulated in stressful situations. Some of our best managers have become the best by simply learning on the fly and sharing their experiences along the way. 

    One reason why this industry is so tight knit is because we support and teach one another by sharing our stories. Listen in to this week’s episode to hear more.

  • When we set our sights on big goals, it’s not necessarily the goal itself that needs our attention: it’s all of the skills that we’ll inevitably need that we need to focus on. Doing things we’ve never done before will require us to try things we’ve never tried before. It requires us to put ourselves out there which means we could potentially feel embarrassed or rejected. 

    But working through those feelings is exactly how you attain the skills that you need in order to achieve your goals. 

    Life is going to provide you challenges all along the way. Some of those challenges will be forced on you. And hopefully some of those challenges will be chosen by you. 

    A chosen challenge is something that you chose for your own benefit. 

    A forced challenge is something that you have no choice but to deal with.

    Chosen challenges are things like running a 5k, saving money for an international trip, learning how to woodwork or learning another language.

    Forced challenges are things such as your building goes up for sale, your car’s engine dies, you lose a loved one or your property experiences a fire or flood. 

    The beauty of choosing your own challenges is that chosen challenges strengthen you for the forced challenges.

  • Welcome back to Addicted to Busy! It's been a while, and I wanted to share a significant life update and the new directions I'm exploring.

    Firstly, I've returned to property management full-time! 

    This life change has been the perfect opportunity to put my skills to the test. It’s the perfect chance to prove that the things that I share on this podcast and in my course are concepts that I, too, follow. 

    And, I can be humble enough to say that following these ideas isn’t easy. I’m constantly battling my inner dialogue that tells me that busy-ness and over-doing it are the answer. But I have to remember that the way that I choose to spend my time is a reflection of what my values are. 

    This year, my focus is on becoming a better speaker. I took an improv comedy class to improve my quick thinking, which was both terrifying and gratifying. Currently, I'm working with a mentor to refine my public speaking skills and considering taking a graphic design class to enhance my presentations.

    I encourage you all to invest in your skills in enjoyable ways. For me, activities like salsa dancing provide a mental break from work, preventing burnout and keeping me energized.

    Throughout this transition, I'm fighting old habits of overworking and perfectionism. I'm prioritizing sleep, health, and setting attainable goals. I've created non-negotiables that ensure I take care of myself daily, making me a more effective manager and person.

    Remember, while we can do anything, we can't do everything. Strategic planning and knowing when to recalibrate are crucial. I have many goals, but I've learned to prioritize and pace myself.

  • I love a great analogy. 

    Imagine a tenant calls you and says, “there's water coming in from my ceiling.”  In many cases, the tenant assumes that the water is coming from the same place in the unit above them. But anyone who has been in property management long enough knows sometimes that leak is not coming directly from above the tenant.

    It could be coming from the complete opposite side on the building and two floors up.

    The same can be true of our goals. 

    Sometimes what we think we need to work on, isn’t always what we actually need to work on.

    You may have set a resolution to exercise consistently. The problem may not be exercise - it could be learning how to put yourself first or it could be challenging yourself to get up earlier.

    Perhaps you set a goal to save more money. The problem may not be your spending - it could be that you need to learn to say no or that you are ready to ask for a raise. 

    In this week’s episode, we talk about how goal setting will cause us to grow in more than one way - and why that’s a beautiful thing.

  • I remember in a job interview, I told the interviewer that I was a perfectionist. I thought it was an admirable trait.

  • It takes time and effort to teach your team new skills.

    As a leader, it’s important to be patient with your employees as they learn new skills. Teaching is a process and it often requires trial and error (and lots of gritting your teeth!) before your employees catch on.

    It can be frustrating to watch someone struggle through something that is second nature to you (ever witnessed a toddler try to tie their shoe when you're in a rush?).

    But, allowing this frustration (both within yourself and within your employee) is the key to slowing down to teach... and teach them well.

  • Have you ever been told that you work too much?

    Do you agree but aren't sure how to stop?

    If so, it may be worth considering that you might be using your career as an avoidance tactic.

    Sometimes, people who work a lot might be trying to avoid things in their personal life. They do not want to think about it or deal with it, so instead, they throw themselves into their work.

    Avoidance tactics can manifest in various ways, from long hours of work to procrastination. However, this can escalate into self-sabotage.

    Many high-achieving managers find themselves stuck in a cycle of working hard and sacrificing personal time at the expense of progress and development.

    When I needed to feel good about myself, I turned to my job to provide me with the validation I lacked.

    My dedication paid off as I excelled as a property manager, making it even easier for me to put in more hours when things got tough outside of the office.

    ▪️If I had an argument with my husband, I'd stay late at the office to avoid confronting him.

    ▪️If I felt inferior at a networking event, I'd just go get another designation or award to prove my worth.

    ▪️If I felt self-conscious about my appearance, I could blame all the hours I put in after the office closed.

    My job made me feel good when my life didn't.

    Eventually, I couldn't "out work" my self-esteem.

    I had to take a good hard look in the mirror and start addressing what I saw.

    𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑰 𝒅𝒊𝒅.

    I started to heal my relationship with myself (and with my loved ones) and I no longer felt I needed to hide from conflict. As I did that, I started finding satisfaction in my personal goals and interests (instead of solely within my career). From there, my self-esteem skyrocketed and I started setting my sights on new goals (the Addicted to Busy podcast being one of them!).
