  • In today’s episode we're taking a special look at the hairand makeup of new film MaXXXine.

Starring Mia Goth as Maxine Minx, the film is the third installment of Ti West's horror trilogy and is set in 1980s Hollywood.

As you can imagine, the fact the film is set in 1985 means that the hair and makeup had to really support a range of characters and I was lucky enough to speak to Sarah Rubano head of makeup and Jaime Leigh McIntosh who led hair design.

I'd love to know if you’re going to see MaXXXine, or if you’ve seen it already so let me know over in the DMs on Instagram @beautymepodcast or find me on Threads @charisse_kenion.

  • Today I’m talking about Suede magazine – a magazine that came and went in a blaze of glory in the early 2000s but gave us just 4 issues.

The reason I’m talking about Suede is because while we only got 4 issues, that magazine absolutely became a new fashion bible for black women, women of colour, actually women of all skin colours.

In this episode I share more on Suede’s history inaugural issue, the team who made it happen and the huge impact the magazine had on black women and women of colour.

I discuss the rumours surrounding the magazine’s demise and I share an update I received via email from the magazine's former editor Suzanne Boyd.

Don’t forget my DMs are always open, so if you’d like to share an insight re Suede magazine, or anything else beauty related, find me @beautymepodcast on Instagram or @charisse_kenion on Threads.

  • This episode is a perfume special that features scents from Phlur, Charlotte Tilbury, Fine'ry - all new to me - plus one very special scent that's been my go-to for years.

Fragrance can evoke a memory or a mood in an instant and in that sense it’s really powerful, so in this episode I discuss embracing a scent wardrobe, rather than sticking with one 'signature scent' for life.

I’d love to know your favourite perfumes right now, so feel free to get in touch over in the DMs on Instagram @beautymepodcast or comment over on Threads @charisse_kenion.

  • This week I’ve got a very special guest, Kayla Greaves.

Born in Montreal, Canada, Kayla is a beauty journalist who lives in Brooklyn, New York and over the past 10 years she has made a name for herself as someone who speaks with authority when it comes to all things beauty.

Kayla is the former executive Beauty Editor of InStyle magazine and she’s written for the likes of Allure, Vogue and Elle.

In this episode we cover so much! We start out with skincare before Kayla shares her early beauty inspirations and also how she’s been embracing a slower approach to her mornings, and life in general.

Along the way Kayla speaks passionately about thinking independently when it comes to our hair, and also shares on her experiences of going from the corporate world to deciding her own schedule as a freelance beauty editor. Finally we end up discovering our shared love of music - specifically Kacey Musgraves.

This has to be one of my favourite interviews ever, so I'd love to know what you think!

As always my DMs are open over @beautymepodcast on Instagram, and you can also find me on Threads @charisse_kenion. Also, be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel because I've been uploading there too!

  • It's a Week in Beauty episode and it's all about the latest Youthforia update. The brand keeps fumbling when it comes to inclusive shades and the entire beauty community has been waiting for an apology over its 'black pigment in a bottle' foundation for over a month.

In her mid teens she became well-known for her role as Hazel in Degrassi: The Next Generation and more recently she has also gone behind the camera, creating The Black Beauty Effect, a ground-breaking 3-part documentary series on Netflix. The show analyses and celebrates how black culture inspires and influences the beauty space world-wide and is essential viewing for anyone who wants to understand how far the beauty industry has come.In this episode Andrea breaks down her acting career – from just 2 years old! – to how she came to the decision that The Black Beauty Effect had to be documented and how she learned to navigate the entertainment industry as an actress and a consumer. If you enjoyed listening to this episode do please take a second to leave a rating on Spotify or a review anywhere you like to listen. • This episode is dedicated to the movie Love Lies Bleeding - the second film from British director Rose Glass and I definitely think it's a future cult classic.

The second I saw the trailer for this film, set in 1980s New Mexico, I knew I had to reach out to the heads of wardrobe, hair and makeup – that’s Olga Mill, Megan Daum and Frieda Valenzuela, respectively.

In this episode each department head shares their prep and the challenges they faced when creating the characters, particularly gym manager Lou, played by Kristen Stewart and bodybuilder Jackie, played by Katy O'Brian.

Love Lies Bleeding came out in the UK last week and has been out in the US since April. Let me know if you've seen it!

  • This episode is all about my favourite makeup items that I use when I just can’t be bothered. They’re the perfect multi-use products for those days when your hormones have you wondering if you want to stay married, or the kids have got you hiding in the bathroom for five minutes to compose yourself.

These 6 products all have multi-tasking qualities to make makeup easy and quick to apply so you can get on with the rest of your day.

If you use any of these, let me know in the DMs @beautymepodcast on Instagram and if you hear me talking about a specific product that you’ve also tried, but think you’ve found something better, I want to know!

If you enjoy this episode please leave a rating on Spotify or a review anywhere else you like to listen. I do read the reviews so feel free to leave constructive feedback.

Don’t forget there’s also a newsletter that you can read for free at beautymenotes.substack.com.

  • This episode is a conversation around the new Rihanna cover for the spring issue of Interview magazine.
It’s a cover that’s upset a lot of her fans for two reasons; one, apparently she's just not looking pretty enough and two, she's wearing what looks like a piece of headwear we would normally associate with a nun.
It's a real deep dive of an episode, starting with Rihanna’s history as a risk-taker when it comes to fashion, before going on to briefly discuss Interview magazine’s own history as a magazine that doesn’t do safe/squeaky clean content, then I’ll break down the cover, including the team, the image that inspired the cover look, the ensuing backlash and I’ll also look at the woman who first really rattled religious groups back in the 1980s: Madonna.
As always, my DMs are open if you want to talk about anything beauty related or if you want to tell me I went too far in my comments on religion – you can find me over on Instagram @beautymepodcast or you can find me on Threads @charisse_kenion or email [email protected].
As promised there is also a blog post featuring all of the imagery and art that I discuss - you can find that here: https://www.charissekenion.co/ and of course I've also made a video, which you can find on my Instagram or TikTok.
If you enjoyed this episode do please leave a rating on Spotify or a review anywhere else you like to listen and make sure you're following the show so you never miss an episode!
Thanks so much for being here – see you next time.

  • This week I’m taking pleasure in some of my favourite magazine cover stories – from Vogue Korea's '90s colour to Rihanna for Vogue China's Gen Z title Vogue+ and Björk for Vogue Scandinavia.

I also discuss the importance of Björk to the worlds of fashion and music and of course, my old favourite topic - retouching - comes into it.

I've created several videos to go with this episode so you can see what I’m talking about and you'll find them on my Instagram @beautymepodcast as well as my TikTok @charissekenion.

I'd also love to know your favourite covers for this month so get in touch over in the DMs and let me know!

If you enjoyed this episode do please leave a rating on Spotify or a review anywhere else you like to listen. Thanks so much for being here – see you next time!
