  • A white Florida woman has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of her Black neighbor, Ajike “AJ” Owens.According to the New York Times, 58-year-old Susan Louise Lorincz, who is white, was charged with manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, batter, and two counts of assault in connection to Owens’ shooting, the Marion County Sheriff’s Offices announced Wednesday (June 7).Charges followed days after civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the Owens’ family, shared details and has been keeping the public updated on the case.

Crump said Owens was shot and killed on Friday (June2) after one of her children accidentally left their iPad in a field they were playing in near an apartment complex in Ocala.According to Crump, a white neighbor, identified as Lorincz, called the children racial slurs and yelled at the children to “get off her land.” He said the woman took the iPad that was left behind by one of Owens’ children.

When the child went back to retrieve his tablet, the woman allegedly threw the device, which hit him and cracked the screen. Owens went to the neighbor’s house after her child told her what happened. When Owens arrived at the door, Crump said the woman shot her through the door.Owens was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Prior to the shooting, police said that Lorincz became angry at the children playing in the field close to her home. She began arguing with them while throwing roller skates and swung an umbrella at the children.Protests begin to form in the area demanding that Lorincz be arrested. Lorincz told police that she acted in self-defense. After an investigation, the sheriff’s department shared that Lorincz’s actions were not justifiable under Florida’s stand-your-ground law.

  • The Danger of Leaving Your Child in a Hot Car: A Fatal Mistake

The scorching heat of a parked car under the blistering sun can quickly become a death trap for any living being left inside, especially vulnerable children. Every year, tragic news headlines remind us of the devastating consequences of leaving a child unattended in a hot vehicle. This preventable mistake has claimed countless innocent lives, causing immense grief and raising concerns about parental responsibility and public awareness. It is crucial to understand the grave dangers associated with leaving children in hot cars to prevent such tragedies from occurring.

Rapid Heat Buildup: Vehicles act as heat traps, intensifying temperatures at an alarming rate, even on moderately warm days. Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked car can increase by 20 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius) within just ten minutes. In an hour, that temperature can surge by over 40 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius), regardless of whether the windows are slightly open. The confined space, combined with the greenhouse effect, can turn the car into an oven, exposing the child to potentially life-threatening conditions.

Heatstroke and Dehydration: Young children are particularly susceptible to heatstroke, a condition that occurs when the body's core temperature rises to dangerous levels. When left unattended in a hot car, a child's body struggles to regulate its temperature, leading to rapid dehydration and overheating. The consequences can be severe, including organ failure, brain damage, and even death. Their smaller bodies heat up faster than adults', making them more vulnerable to these life-threatening conditions.Unintentional Traps: Tragically, many incidents involving children left in hot cars are unintentional. Parents and caregivers can become preoccupied or overwhelmed, inadvertently forgetting that their child is in the backseat. Sleep-deprived parents, a sudden change in routine, or a child who falls asleep unnoticed can contribute to these devastating incidents. It is crucial to raise awareness about the potential risks and implement preventive measures to avoid such heartbreaking accidents.

Preventing Hot Car Tragedies: To prevent these preventable tragedies, it is essential to take proactive steps and ensure the safety of our children. The following measures can help mitigate the risks:Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.Place a reminder in the front seat, such as a cellphone or wallet, to prompt you to check the backseat before leaving the car.Develop a communication system with childcare providers to ensure the child's safe arrival.Educate friends, family, and caregivers about the dangers of leaving children in hot cars.If you see a child alone in a parked car, immediately call emergency services.Public Awareness and Responsibility: Raising public awareness about the dangers of leaving children in hot cars is crucial. Governments, organizations, and the media should consistently highlight this issue to ensure that every parent and caregiver understands the potential risks. By working together, we can promote responsible parenting and create a culture of vigilance to protect our most precious assets: our children.

Conclusion: The danger of leaving a child in a hot car cannot be overstated. As responsible members of society, it is our duty to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to prevent these tragic incidents from occurring. By spreading awareness, implementing preventive measures, and emphasizing personal responsibility, we can work towards eradicating these avoidable fatalities and ensuring the safety and well-being of our children. Remember, it only takes a moment of negligence for a tragedy to unfold, so let us strive to protect our little ones and prevent any more lives from being lost to this devastating mistake.

But her struggle, ultimately unsuccessful, to be compensated by the federal government for her service during the Civil War is less well-known. In 1865, after three years of dedicated service to the United States Army as a nurse, spy, and soldier, she started a long quest to secure the compensation she never received from the government. • Tiffany Haddish Gets Dragged For Deleted Tweet Defending Jonathan Majors Amid Abuse Allegations.

Tiffany Haddish is under fire for a recent tweet, which is still garnering backlash even after she deleted it.

The controversial star is under fire, once again, this time for seemingly defending Jonathan Majors amid his ongoing abuse allegations. The comedian tweeted a link to a story about the Jonathan Majors abuse case, which included an article where Majors and his lawyer claim to show that his accuser was unhurt after the alleged abuse. The team included screenshots of the alleged security camera footage that, they say, shows proof that the victim was unharmed.

Shortly after sending out the tweet, Haddish deleted it, but many had already seen it and taken screenshots. Due to her own allegations of abuse, fans were quick to jump on her case, wondering why she thought it would be a good idea to defend someone else when she has her own allegations to worry about.

As the comedian’s tweet went viral, people brought up several past controversies surrounding Haddish, one such drama involved Law Roach. The celebrity stylist told Jason Lee from Hollywood Unlocked that he stopped working with the actress as he had “ruined a lot of relationships trying to elevate Tiffany.”

"Just found out Don Lemon was terminated from CNN. Damn, dawg," the rapper, who reportedly owns over two dozen Wingstop restaurants across the United States, said. "But guess what? The brother's got your back.""We hiring at Wingstop," he added. "And for some reason, I believe you know what you doing with the lemon pepper wings, so man, just send over your résumé. "I need to hit the team over at Rapstar Energy Drink and let 'em know we should introduce the Don Lemon flavor. What y'all think? Aye, Don, we got you brother!"

Lemon's dismissal from CNN comes after a bombshell report from Variety earlier this month that accused Lemon of having a history of misogynistic behavior toward female coworkers.Lemon denied Variety's claims in a statement, saying: "The story, which is riddled with patently false anecdotes and no concrete evidence, is entirely based on unsourced, unsubstantiated, 15-year-old anonymous gossip. It's amazing and disappointing that Variety would be so reckless."CNN did not provide a reason for Lemon's termination on Monday."CNN and Don have parted ways," the network said. "Don will forever be a part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years. We wish him well and will be cheering him on in his future endeavors."

  • Charlamagne Tha God is reportedly looking to have a lawsuit stemming from his 2001 sexual assault case thrown out on the grounds there is a lack of evidence.According to a report from Radar Online on Thursday (April 20), the radio personality filed new documents stating that the DNA rape kit from the alleged 2001 incident didn’t match his DNA, thus proving his maintained innocence.

“[Alleged victim Jessica Reid] has persisted in broadly disseminating her unsubstantiated claims, ignoring that the South Carolina Solicitor in 2018 declined her request to re-open the case due to a lack of evidence while confirming that no basis existed to bring sexual assault charges against Charlamagne,” the filing reads. “Witnesses had attested to the fact that Charlamagne had already left the party when the alleged assault occurred.”His attorney Michael Weinsten also released a statement.

“We are confident that Ms. Reid’s meritless civil lawsuit in which she represents herself will be promptly dismissed,” he said. “This is the same sexual assault claim that was fully investigated and dismissed by authorities in South Carolina more than 21 years ago.“At that time, my client voluntarily submitted his DNA, and it was confirmed his DNA was not found in her rape kit. It is also the same matter that Ms. Reid tried to re-open in 2018 that the South Carolina Solicitor General declined to re-open, suggesting among other things it was ‘not ethical’ to do so.

”Reid filed a federal lawsuit against the radio host in a New York court just a few months ago in 2022, accusing him of “willfully, unlawfully, and feloniously engage in penile/vaginal intercourse with a fifteen-year-old female child” while he was 22 years old at the time.Reid didn’t cooperate with the police’s investigation after they found her allegedly “crying uncontrollably” after she attended Charlamagne’s birthday party at Short Stay Naval Recreational Center in Charleston, South Carolina in June 2001.

In addition to his DNA not being found after a rape kit was conducted, materials tested from underneath Reid’s fingernails were also analyzed and determined to contain “nothing of apparent serological evidentiary value. At the time of the initial investigation, Charlamagne Tha God pleaded guilty to a lower charge of “contributing to the delinquency of a minor” after providing her with alcohol. The shock jock served three years of probation but the sexual assault charge was dismissed.

  • 3-YEAR-OLD GIRL ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS AND KILLS 4-YEAR-OLD SISTER IN HOUSTON.

Prosecutors will determine whether any adults will face charges after an unsupervised 3-year-old accidentally shot and killed her 4-year-old sister at their home in Houston, authorities said.Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called the Sunday shooting a “very preventable” situation.“It seems like another tragic story of a child getting access to a firearm and hurting someone else,” Gonzalez said at a news conference. Police say the investigation is in the preliminary phase."Everyone's impacted, a community's impacted when a child loses their life in this way," Gonzalez said.

A 3-year-old girl in Houston gained access to a firearm and "unintentionally" shot and killed her 4-year-old sister late Sunday, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.Gonzalez said the preliminary investigation showed that the two children had been inside an apartment with five family members and friends and each of the two children's parents believed the other was watching the kids. Instead, they were left unsupervised and picked up an "unsecured" and loaded semi-automatic pistol. The family members heard one gunshot and ran into the room to find one child had apparently accidentally shot the other toddler, Gonzalez said at a press conference. The injured child was unresponsive, he said, and the parents immediately called 911.

"The toddler was pronounced deceased at the scene," he said on Twitter.Officials said it will be up to the district attorney to decide whether charges will be pressed against any of the adults."You've got to make sure you're a responsible gun owner," Gonzalez said. "Secure your weapons in a safe place. It's got to be more than just to tell the kids not to touch the weapons." (ABC NEWS)

  • Johnson & Johnson offers nearly $9 billion to settle talc lawsuits.

Johnson & Johnson said Tuesday that it will offer at least $8.9 billion to resolve thousands of lawsuits filed by people alleging that the company's products containing talc caused cancer, quadrupling a previous offer to settle the suits. The health and consumer goods company laid out the proposal in a news release. The suggested settlement, which is payable over 25 years, is $6.9 billion more than its previous offer in connection with a 2021 bankruptcy filing by its LTL Management unit.

Women have filed a barrage of suits in recent years alleging that J&J's baby powder gave them ovarian cancer or mesothelioma, a cancer that strikes the lungs and other organs.More than 60,000 parties who have sued J&J are backing the proposed settlement."The newly announced settlement marks a significant victory for the tens of thousands of women suffering from gynecological cancers caused by J&J's talc-based products," a group of plaintiffs' law firms said in a statement. "Under the terms of the agreement, all talc claimants will be able to have their claims evaluated and assessed within one year of plan confirmation, ensuring a swift and efficient resolution for victims of the company's misconduct."

J&J continues to deny that its talcum powder poses health risks, saying that the settlement offer does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing."The company continues to believe that these claims are specious and lack scientific merit," Erik Haas, worldwide vice president of litigation at Johnson & Johnson, said in a statement. "However, as the bankruptcy court recognized, resolving these cases in the tort system would take decades and impose significant costs on LTL and the system, with most claimants never receiving any compensation."

The proposed settlement must now be approved by bankruptcy judge.Attorney Brian Glasser of Bailey Glasser, who represented the committee of talc claimants, also urged the court to dismiss the LTL Management bankruptcy.

"The last time J&J tried this they told the world that $2 billion was more than enough to satisfy these claims," he said in an email. "The $9 billion they have offered today makes plain that the prior number was ridiculous, the prior bankruptcy filing was a scam and the entire exercise was a misuse of the bankruptcy system. The court of appeals agreed, and dismissed their case. An hour or so later they found $7 billion in the company in seat cushions."Lawsuits against J&J have contributed to declining sales for its talcum-based baby powder, and the company last year said it would stop selling the product worldwide.J&J's stock rose 3% in after-hours trading Tuesday after the company's announcement. • Jonathan Majors’ Lawyer Says There’s Evidence Proving Actor Is “Entirely Innocent” & Expects Charges To Be “Dropped Imminently” Of Alleged Assault.

Jonathan Majors’ criminal defense lawyer is speaking out and claiming the Creed III actor is innocent and has evidence proving his innocence.“Jonathan Majors is completely innocent and is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows,” Priya Chaudhry told Deadline in a statement. “We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently.”

Chaudhry said that the “evidence includes video footage from the vehicle where this episode took place, witness testimony from the driver and others who both saw and heard the episode, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations.”

“All the evidence proves that Mr. Majors is entirely innocent and did not assault her whatsoever,” the lawyer added. “Unfortunately, this incident came about because this woman was having an emotional crisis, for which she was taken to a hospital yesterday.

The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason Mr. Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon.”Majors, also the star of Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, was arrested on Saturday, March 25 in New York City on charges that included assault, strangulation and harassment.

“A preliminary investigation determined that a 33-year-old male was involved in a domestic dispute with a 30-year-old female,” read a statement from the Deputy Commissioner Public Information. “The victim informed police she was assaulted. Officers placed the 33-year-old male into custody without incident. The victim sustained minor injuries to her head and neck and was removed to an area hospital in stable condition.”

  • 25% of Black women say they were denied job interviews because of their hair, survey says.

A majority of Black women say they feel they have to change their hair just to be taken seriously for job opportunities and in professional settings, according to a survey commissioned by LinkedIn and Dove. Approximately 1,000 Black women ages 25 to 64, both part-time and full-time employees, took part in the CROWN Research Study.
Some 66% of them said they had changed their hair for a job interview to lessen the chances of being passed over due to hair discrimination. Twenty-five percent of Black women said they believed they were denied a job interview because of their hair. When looking at the data, said Andrew McCaskill, a senior director of global communications and career expert for LinkedIn, workplaces need “to work better” for women in general, but especially Black women.

This is particularly pertinent now that more Black women are opting to wear their natural hair instead of straightening their hair with chemical relaxers, which reportedly can increase the risk of developing uterine cancer.Once they have landed their jobs, Black women with textured hair are twice as likely to experience microaggressions in the workplace compared to Black women with straight hair. And 25% of Black women ages 25 to 34 surveyed said they were sent home from work because of their hair.

Black women and young Black professionals have shared conversations about their own hair journey through Dove’s #BlackHairIsProfessional campaign which, McCaskill said, provides a safe space to do so. In one LinkedIn post, a Black woman shared a screenshot of a message she received online criticizing her natural hair — saying she needs to “tone it down and make it flat” while also labeling the woman’s hair as “scary.” The woman shared her own selfie wearing her natural hair and said instead, she decided to “TURN IT UP & PUFF IT OUT!”

Experiencing hair discrimination at an early point in a Black professional’s career can cause an automatic “disconnect of belonging” and a loss of confidence in their skills, McCaskill said. One example he cited is a young Black worker not getting the anticipated reaction for their work because the manager “is focused on something like their hair,” he said.“

What we know is that, as you get more mature in your career, you’re typically also more confident in your skills that you have and what you bring to the table,” McCaskill said. “For younger folks, these types of aggressions and microaggressions can cause real angst for them in terms of even to the point of doubting their skills and saying, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’”

Efforts to advance legislation have been implemented on a state and national level. The House passed the Crown Act last March to ban hair-related discrimination. California was also the first state to ban hair discrimination in 2019, with a list of other states following suit, including Massachusetts, which passed its anti-hair discrimination law last July.

Companies can foster belonging among Black employees by “giving people space for their authenticity at work and being intentional about it,” McCaskill said. And most importantly, they need to “believe Black women when they have the bravery and courage to say that they are experiencing microaggressions and or hair discrimination at work.”LinkedIn, McCaskill said, provides diversity, equity and inclusion courses on topics such as uncovering unconscious bias in recruiting and interviewing.

But he also said Black professionals should protect their own identity and expression.“If your authentic self and your authentic hair are not welcome in that space, that’s probably not a space where you will be able to thrive anyway, he said.”
