Join us as we revisit this conversation from 2020!
In recent years accounting has evolved from rules, discipline and structure related to producing quality financial reports to so much more. Now the accounting professional needs to become more entrepreneurial, what we refer to as becoming an Accountrepreneur. Today accounting services need to also provide clear value and actionable information to the business owner to help them make more educated business decisions. So, who is driving this evolution and change and how does it apply to each of us individually?
Beyond seeing the numbers, understanding the trends, etc. the hard part is asking the business owner the right questions that lead to a discussion related to what they can and need to do next. Listen as Andy and Roger discuss how best to move into a consultative relationship and price your services.
Your Host: Roger Knecht, president of Universal Accounting Center
Our Guest: Andy North, with AccountingWeb
Andy has spent the last 19 years studying the world of accounting firms, having run AccountingWEB in the UK he moved to the US (Boston) with his family back in 2015 to take the reins of the US version of the site. In that time, he's had the pleasure of working with almost all of the various vendors to the accounting sector to help them realize and articulate their value propositions to their potential customers.

Welcome to another insightful episode of Building the Premier Accounting Firm with host Roger Knecht. Today Roger delves into strategies for differentiation and market leadership tailored for bookkeeping, accounting, and tax business owners with marketing expert Daniel Den. Daniel shares transformative insights on how to thrive in the competitive landscape of 2024 and beyond.
Key Discussion Points:
X Factor Methodology: Daniel explains how his powerful approach has helped over 20,000 clients distinguish themselves in their markets. He recounts his journey from running a party business to becoming a successful internet marketer.
Embracing Individuality: The episode emphasizes the importance of unique characteristics in building a standout brand. The “celebrity code” strategy is discussed as a means to develop a distinctive identity and foster community through shared values.
Understanding Your Audience: Tailoring marketing messages to specific target audiences or “avatars” is crucial. For accountants, this means identifying niches, such as older real estate investors, to effectively reach and resonate with them.
Avoiding Commoditization: Generalists face challenges in saturated markets. Daniel and Roger highlight the need to create a “wow factor” and unique service experiences to prevent being viewed as a commodity.
Relationship Dynamics: Niche marketing and personal client interactions can significantly enhance customer experience and loyalty. The episode references the book “Ideas That Influence,” which provides strategies for effective marketing and memorable advertising.
Successful Advertising Examples: Learn from successful campaigns like Blendtec’s “Will It Blend?” and discover how accountants can transition from service providers to trusted advisors, improving clients’ financial literacy.
Essential Marketing Pillars: The discussion outlines nine crucial pillars for effective marketing, with a strong emphasis on the necessity of uniqueness to stand out in 2024.
As we wrap up this episode of “Building the Premier Accounting Firm,” it’s clear that standing out in the competitive market of 2024 requires a blend of innovation, individuality, and strategic networking. Daniel Denn’s expertise offers a roadmap for accounting professionals to not only navigate but excel in the ever-evolving landscape. By leveraging the X Factor Knecht Methodology and embracing your unique attributes, you can carve out a niche that speaks directly to your ideal clients, fostering stronger relationships and loyalty.
The importance of understanding your audience cannot be overstated, as Daniel and Roger highlight in this episode. Thriving in this competitive landscape isn’t just about keeping pace—it’s about setting the pace. In this episode, Universal Accounting President and host Roger Knecht sits down with Rebecca Howell to explore her transformative journey in the accounting industry. From a passion for math to a thriving 20-year career in bookkeeping, Rebecca’s story is one of growth, adaptation, and strategic transition that we in the industry can relate to and learn from.
Key Highlights:
Early Beginnings and Business Growth:
Rebecca’s love for numbers propelled her into bookkeeping, supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Launching her own firm in 2003, she expanded her client base significantly, aided by Intuit’s proadvisor program.
Adapting to Industry Changes:
As Intuit shifted to offering its own services, Rebecca refocused on building long-term client relationships and empowering her team, resulting in impressive growth from 40 clients in 2019 to over 200 by 2022.
Leadership and Personal Challenges:
Facing challenges in leadership and team dynamics, Rebecca hired a business coach to enhance communication.
They discuss how the stress of being the sole tax preparer took a toll on her health, leading to the sale of her business for personal well-being.
Identity and Purpose Reflection:
Letting go of tax clients led to an identity crisis and a reevaluation of her purpose beyond business ownership.
Rebecca underscores the importance of a sustainable business model and early exit strategy planning.
Transition to New Roles:
Finding fulfillment in transitioning from a fractional CFO to exit planning, Rebecca advocates for prioritizing profit, inspired by the book “Profit First.”
Entrepreneurial Advice:
Rebecca emphasizes the necessity of early exit strategy planning, comparing business maintenance to caring for a home or vehicle.
Her journey highlights the balance between work and personal life, with a strong support network playing a crucial role.
Reassessing Priorities: The discussion encourages listeners to reassess their priorities, learn to say no, and leverage resources like podcasts and conferences for continued professional development.
Rebecca’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, a supportive network, and a strong work ethic in navigating the challenges and opportunities within the accounting field. If you’d like to follow Rebecca’s footsteps toward building your own accounting firm, reach out to Universal Accounting Center at 435-344-4060 to learn how.

In a nutshell it provides a top-down single-page graphical view of accounting. Its unique layout has the debit and credit accounts grouped by 'sides' and then color-coded. Once the students learn how the framework works, it becomes a powerful tool for 'pointability' - the ability for the teacher, or the student, to simply point at the model to emphasize a question or make a point, for example: "Is it here (pointing to assets) or here (pointing to expenses)?" You can also use it to teach debits and credits, for T-accounts, underpin financial analysis (see the ratios), teach how the general ledger and general journal entries work, provide accounting literacy and much more.
