  • Chad Daybell was sentenced to death on Saturday after a jury recommended the penalty for his convictions of first-degree murder and conspiracy in the deaths of his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and two of his second wife’s children, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow. The case, driven by elements of power, sex, money, and apocalyptic spiritual beliefs, has captivated national attention.

Judge Steven Boyce formally imposed the death sentence after the jury's lengthy deliberations concluded that the death penalty was appropriate. Daybell, who appeared with a blank expression as the judge read the sentence, also received a 15-year prison term for insurance fraud charges. The sequestered jury began their deliberations on Friday afternoon, taking six hours before pausing for the night. They resumed deliberations at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, reaching a verdict by 10:45 a.m.

"This defendant exhibited utter disregard for human life," Prosecutor Rob Wood told the jury on Friday, asking them to consider several aggravating factors that warranted the death penalty. Wood emphasized that the murders were committed for financial gain, citing Daybell's conviction for insurance fraud related to life insurance policies that paid out after Tammy Daybell's death. Additionally, both Chad and Lori Vallow Daybell were convicted of grand theft for continuing to collect Social Security benefits for the children after their deaths.

Wood further argued that the murders were “especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel, manifesting exceptional depravity.” He described Daybell's actions as a clear threat to society, suggesting that his propensity for murder could continue.

"It is your decision whether one or more of these aggravators has been proven. And if it has been, you must decide if, under these circumstances, imposition of the death penalty would be just or unjust," Wood concluded.

The jury's decision was influenced by the contrasting portrayals of Daybell. Prosecutors painted him as a manipulative figure whose actions were driven by greed and apocalyptic beliefs. In contrast, the defense sought to humanize Daybell, emphasizing that he still had family who cared about him.

The sensational nature of the case, which included claims of apocalyptic prophecies, "zombie" children, and illicit affairs, was highlighted in a 2022 Netflix true-crime documentary, further amplifying public interest.

Chad Daybell's second wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, was also convicted last year for the murder of her children and conspiring to kill Tammy Daybell. She is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole and has appealed her convictions, raising questions about her mental competency to stand trial.

Authorities believe Tylee and JJ were killed in September 2019, the same month they were last seen. Tammy Daybell was found dead in her Idaho home on October 19, 2019, just weeks before Chad Daybell married Lori Vallow Daybell.

During the trial, emotional testimonies from the victims' families illustrated the profound loss and grief caused by the murders.

Colby Ryan, Tylee's brother, expressed his sorrow, saying, "I will never get to see my sister grow up or achieve her dreams. She was robbed of her life, and we were robbed of her presence." Larry Woodcock, JJ's grandfather, described JJ as "a light in our lives, cruelly extinguished."
As the sentencing was handed down, the courtroom remained solemn. The decision to impose the death penalty on Chad Daybell underscores the severity of his crimes and the enduring impact on the victims' families. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of manipulative and violent behavior masked by extreme beliefs.

  • During Friday's session, emotional testimonies from the victims' families were anticipated, aiming to provide the jury with a deeper understanding of the devastating impact of Daybell's actions. These statements are critical as they contribute to the jury's decision on the appropriate sentence for Daybell.

The courtroom heard first from Colby Ryan, Tylee's brother, who struggled through tears to convey his grief. "I will never get to see my sister grow up or achieve her dreams," he said. "She was robbed of her life, and we were robbed of her presence."

Following Colby, Larry and Kay Woodcock, JJ Vallow's grandparents, took the stand. Larry's voice shook as he described the pain of losing JJ, saying, "JJ was a light in our lives, and that light was cruelly extinguished. We will never recover from this loss."

As the day progressed, Tammy Daybell's family shared their anguish. Tammy's sister, Samantha Gwilliam, addressed the court with a mixture of sorrow and anger. "Tammy was a loving wife, mother, and sister. She deserved so much more than to be a victim of such betrayal and violence," Gwilliam stated.

The prosecution highlighted the cold and calculated nature of Daybell's actions, urging the jury to consider the maximum penalty. "Chad Daybell's crimes were premeditated and heinous. The loss felt by these families is immeasurable," said Prosecutor Rob Wood. "Justice demands that he faces the severest consequences."

Daybell's defense team sought to humanize their client, arguing that his life should be spared. "While Mr. Daybell has been convicted, he is still a father and has family who care about him. We ask the jury to consider life in prison without the possibility of parole," pleaded defense attorney John Prior.

The jury's deliberation on whether Daybell should receive a life sentence or the death penalty is expected to be intense and potentially lengthy, given the gravity of the crimes and the emotional weight of the victim impact statements.

  • The jury in the Chad Daybell murder trial has begun deliberations after hearing closing arguments and receiving detailed instructions on the charges. Daybell faces accusations of conspiracy to commit murder and grand theft by deception in connection with the deaths of Tylee Ryan, JJ Vallow, and Tammy Daybell.

Prosecutors Lindsey Blake and Rob Wood presented a comprehensive rebuttal closing argument, emphasizing Daybell's pivotal role in a conspiracy that led to the tragic deaths. Blake highlighted text messages between Daybell and Lori Vallow, revealing their belief in "zombies" and "death percentages," concepts they allegedly used to justify the killings.
"Chad says who’s dark, Chad says death percentages, and three bodies are located on his property. Three obstacles that were in their way," Blake stated, referencing a clip of Daybell in the back seat of a police car saying, "I’m not coming back."

The prosecution played several recordings, including a patriarchal blessing Daybell gave to Alex Cox, Lori Vallow's brother. Blake emphasized the message, "Alex had already helped him in ways they could never repay." The prosecution also showed a text message exchange where Chad referred to relatives as "obstacles."

Defense attorney John Prior countered, arguing that Chad Daybell's actions and beliefs were taken out of context. Prior insisted that Daybell's religious beliefs did not equate to a criminal conspiracy.

"It can’t be an agreement that we have consistent religious beliefs," Prior said, stressing that there was no direct evidence linking Daybell to the physical act of murder.

Prior also focused on the lack of DNA evidence on the tools used to bury Tylee and JJ and questioned the credibility of key witnesses, including Melanie Gibb and Zulema Pastenes. He argued that the investigation was flawed and relied too heavily on speculative and circumstantial evidence.

Judge Steven Boyce provided the jury with 41 instructions, including definitions of conspiracy, aiding and abetting, and reasonable doubt. He reminded jurors that the state must prove every element of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. "The state has to prove that Chad Daybell, with Lori Vallow, Alex Cox, or other co-conspirators, entered into some sort of an agreement to kill the children and to kill Tammy Daybell," Boyce instructed.

The jury was sequestered for deliberations, ensuring they remain isolated from outside influences. Five alternates were also randomly selected and sworn in, ready to step in if needed. "If there is reasonable doubt, and there is reasonable doubt, you must return a verdict of not guilty," Prior concluded in his closing argument.

As the jury deliberates, the community awaits the outcome of this high-profile case that has captivated national attention. The fate of Chad Daybell now rests in the hands of the jurors, who must sift through weeks of testimony and evidence to reach their verdict.

  • In the latest episode of 'Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski,' former felony prosecutor and defense attorney Eric Faddis provides insights into the ongoing trial of Chad Daybell. The discussion focuses on testimonies from Daybell’s children, who provide accounts that could support their father’s defense. Daybell's daughter testified about her understanding that Lori Vallow’s children were in a "safe place," a vague and non-specific answer suggesting potential indoctrination or coaching. Another significant testimony came from Daybell's son, who described discovering his mother, Tammy Daybell, dead and how he didn't hear any struggle, raising questions about the nature of her death. Faddis notes that these testimonies seem overly rehearsed and lack authenticity, which might affect their credibility with the jury. The episode also explores a critical moment where Chad Daybell’s defense attorney, John Prior, made a possible Freudian slip by referring to Tammy's death as a "murder," which could impact the defense's argument. The conversation concludes with a discussion on whether these testimonies and potential attorney errors could contribute to grounds for a retrial if Daybell is convicted.

    **Main Points:**
    - Testimonies from Chad Daybell’s children aim to support his defense.
    - Daybell’s daughter provides vague answers about Lori Vallow’s children being in a "safe place."
    - Daybell’s son recounts finding Tammy Daybell dead, claiming he heard no struggle.
    - Faddis observes the rehearsed nature of the testimonies, questioning their authenticity.
    - Discussion on a potential Freudian slip by defense attorney John Prior, referring to Tammy’s death as a "murder."
    - Consideration of whether these factors could lead to a retrial if Daybell is convicted.

  • The trial of Chad Daybell continued with significant developments as the prosecution presented its final rebuttal witnesses, bringing the high-profile case closer to conclusion. Key testimonies from medical experts and investigators provided crucial insights into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Tammy Daybell, JJ Vallow, and Tylee Ryan.

Judge Boyce opened the courtroom to the jury and addressed a pending issue about a proposed witness, Janice Olsen, who claimed to have heard Tammy Daybell discussing increasing her life insurance. After deliberation, Boyce decided to exclude Olsen’s testimony, citing concerns about its relevance and her potential bias after watching parts of the trial.

Dr. Erik Christensen, a retired medical examiner, resumed his testimony, reiterating that Tammy Daybell’s death was not accidental, natural, or a suicide. "There were bruises on her arms and chest, but her heart and other organs were normal," Christensen testified, dismissing the possibility of death due to toxicological issues, seizures, or cardiac arrhythmia. He concluded that Tammy's death was caused by asphyxia, labeling it a homicide.
Defense attorney John Prior cross-examined Christensen, questioning why certain details, such as minor lung inflammation, were not highlighted in his report. Christensen responded that the inflammation was insignificant and did not contribute to the cause of death.

Retired detective David Stubbs took the stand next, presenting evidence from Chad Daybell’s Google search history. Stubbs revealed that on January 3, 2019, someone using Chad Daybell's account searched for information on how to turn off location services on an iPhone. "A request was made on August 24, 2019, to delete all GPS history from the chad.daybell account," Stubbs testified, noting that such actions could be indicative of attempts to conceal illicit activities.

During cross-examination, Prior suggested that the searches could have been made by Tammy Daybell, who was more tech-savvy and used Apple devices. Stubbs acknowledged the possibility but reiterated that the searches were conducted through Chad’s account.

Lt. Ray Hermosillo from the Rexburg Police Department provided testimony about the investigation into the disappearance of JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan. He detailed how the children were eventually found buried on Chad Daybell’s property. Hermosillo also mentioned that he drove by the Daybell residence frequently, partly because his dry cleaning business was nearby and partly due to the ongoing investigation.

Hermosillo recounted seeing Emma Murray, Daybell's daughter, at a gym but noted he did not interact with her. His testimony reinforced the prosecution’s narrative of Chad Daybell’s involvement in the children’s deaths.

The prosecution wrapped up its rebuttal witnesses, and Judge Boyce announced the next phase: jury instructions. "Closing arguments will be conducted tomorrow," Boyce stated, signaling the trial’s imminent conclusion. The jury was excused for the day, and the courtroom was cleared for administrative actions and further discussions on jury instructions.

With the rebuttal witnesses concluded, the Chad Daybell trial is poised for its closing arguments. The testimonies of Dr. Christensen, Detective Stubbs, and Lt. Hermosillo have bolstered the prosecution's case, setting the stage for the jury's deliberations. As the trial progresses, the legal community and public alike are keenly observing the proceedings, awaiting the final verdict in this complex and highly publicized case.
