  • I’ve admired Dave Zackin’s work on Instagram for years, so when I opened a very small gallery at the Bushwick Comedy Collective to bring funny art to comedians, I was THRILLED when Zackin said yes. His show opens at The Dog House Gallery at The Brooklyn Comedy Collective, Friday,137 Montrose Ave., Friday, Sept.13, 6-9pm. It will be up through Oct. 21, 2024.
I was curious about Dave. His work is literally the funniest work I see on Instagram, plus he sells everything he makes, yet he works on his own, not interested in expanding his practice into a gallery/art world situation as many artists would aspire too.
I learn a lot from Dave in this session. A lot about how he came to do what he does, which involves a completely original practice of repurposing other people’s rejected pottery in the pottery studio. Dave’s life has balance, a job he loves, his art-making that he loves and most of all his wife and 7-year-old son. Dave turns out to be a great example of simply how to live.
We also discuss this wonderful film that Dave made in 2002 while studying animation at the Rhode Island School of Design, titled Tunanoodle, so I’m including it HERE.
See Dave’s work on Instagram HERE. Dave’s website is HERE.

Here's some quotes I found from Dave that helps explain his work/process.
"I grew up in Newton, next to Boston, but have been in Brooklyn for the past 18 years. I have always collected junk, and as a kid, I drew on my old adam/colecovision computer with a permanent marker. I drew on the old black and white tv we had in the attic. Drawing on top of things made them mine, and made them more than just junk. I did some drawings of Fred Flinstone as a kid and then added a mustache and told people they were drawings of my dad. I like modifying things to change their meanings."
"I create functional artwork made from discarded pots at a community ceramic studio in Brooklyn, NY. The challenge is to make something new out of half-finished pottery.
I was never great at drawing from life, but I know how to put eyes and noses together to make some funny faces. The first ceramic studio I worked at had a big pile of unwanted pottery in the back yard that they let people glaze for free to test out different glaze combinations. I quickly became obsessed with drawing faces and writing notes on the discarded dishes. I loved that quick throw-away jokes could be applied to a material that, if not dropped on the floor, could last for thousands of years. "

  • This is my 7th episode with radio show host, Ben Louis—one every year, since 2018. For listeners who don’t know about Ben Louis, he started his career in radio right here at Radio Free Brooklyn in 2018 and found his calling. It was exciting for me, Dr. Lisa, to see someone like Ben with all the talent, hard work, drive and ambition to pursue his dream and he’s been taking me along for the ride. This year, specifically the last few months have been pivotal for Ben. He got a promotion, raise and HIS OWN SIRIUSXM SHOW, Sundays 5pm + midnight on channel 47, Sunday Mimosa, which has about 3 million listeners. Getting this show puts Ben squarely in an industry position as a taste-maker in R+B music. He is sent to festivals, he’s interviewed Patti Labelle, but he’s the same old guy, just a little more grown. Ben has truly realized some goals and is now in the position of maximizing his opportunities, so no time to sleep. As always Ben is growing and inspiring. At this point, it seems his mission is bigger than him.

  • This is the sixth year in a row that Ben Louis has been my first guest of the year. I absolutely love starting the year this way. Ben is a beacon of positivity. Five years ago, when I first met Ben, he was an intern at Radio Free Brooklyn. We all knew he was on his way to big things. I think it's taken more patience and hard work than he could have originally imagined, but today I think Ben is pinching himself thinking, "Is this my life?" and it's poised to get even better. Ben is working with his radio heroes and interviewing celebrities like Vivica A. Fox, Chaka Khan, Babyface and so many more. Also Ben has just had a one-year anniversary of living with his girlfriend, Scarlet, and it's going great-fun to hear about too!
If you go back to the first episode in 2018, the very beginning of Ben's radio career, you can hear Ben has just fallen in love with radio and it's disrupting his life—his girlfriend had just dumped him—if only Ben could have looked into the future at that moment—

  • I tried to get #GenevieveGagnard to admit that she is driven by her anger and resentment from being brought up in a mized race family, but I was way off base. It turns out that it just made her curious and inspired to find out more about different sides of her personity which is what inspires the wide range of characters she creates in her work. Also-her mother is great at finding and collecting cool shit which she can use as much of as she likes. My advice to her is to be friendly to shy guys because they don't realize she's shy too, since it's quite hidden in her. http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2016/01/07/fashion/genevieve-gaignard-a-photographer-collagist-and-installation-artist/s/20120107Genevieve-slide-QBQU.html?_r=1

  • I have to say, Eryn Levine, host of RFB's Game Play Radio on Thursday's 2-3pm does not hold back on diving into her exploration of doing more than she needs to so other people will be happy. Eryn is an impressive young woman who is intelligent, responsible, initiative taking... all those things that will make her a huge success. She sees how her people pleasing is getting in her way and is becoming vigilant about jettising some of this behavior. I would say Eryn's affliction is not uncommon, but her honestly and drive to change her behavior is. We explore Eryn's background on how this behavior has developed in her past and we figure out some tactical ways to change her behavior so she can focus all that valuable energy on her own goals. Eryn has smarts and motivation, so we agreed she will come back for a second appointment in a month or so. I anticipate great progress which we can all learn from. Eryn is a gem. Her show Game Play Radio harnesses her prodigious storytelling skills.

  • Comedian Myq Kaplan a veteran of both America's Got Talent and Last Comic Standing talks with me about his time in weekly therapy with me a few years ago. Also Myq has had more than one open relationship and we learn how those were similar/different. http://myqkaplan.com/ #comedy #psychotherapy #art

  • I was prompted to invite David Humphrey on my show due to his recent exhibition-terrific!-at blue chip gallery, Fredricks and Fraiser. http://www.fredericksfreisergallery.com/artists/david-humphrey We had a great talk about his work and explored how he wants his viewers to make up stories with the elements in the work. I had a crush on David in my youth - he was friends with my neighbor-but we were both involved with other people and he never found out. It was fun bringing it full circle on this show now that we are both happily married grownups. His wife, Jennifer Coates is an amazing artist as well and has a show up till April 16 at http://www.freightandvolume.com/ #psychotherapy #art

  • Lauren Hennessy is a transgender man but in saying that it is SO simplifying our conversation. Hennessy helped me understand her particular brand of transgenderness in a way that I could really understand that I never have before. She's also charming and fun and sexy in a dude way. She's married to Keith and the Girl podcaster, Chemda Hennessy and works as comic Judy Gold's assistant. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/23/transgender-man-medical-intervention_n_5869118.html

  • Marielina is a New York native, LaGuardia School graduate and accomplished actress. Likely you've seen her on TV. Marilena is the only child of a doctor (dad) and a trained nurse (mom) whose high level job involved running a hospital. The emotional machinations that Maralina has gone through with her parents, her mom in particular, (her dad died when she was 9) has likely contributed to her skills and success as an actress. The circumstances around her mom are emotionally confusing—I don't want to say more here as it would be out of context, but it is uplifting to hear how Marilena has negotiated her life to have a successful career and marriage.
    More about Marilena HERE.

  • I had an interesting session with a female sex worker. BTW: That really is her photo—I didn't take it but she did text it to me. This session was complicated, but most importantly it was compelling to have a smart woman talk about why being a sex worker is a sensible option for her. I concur! We get into discussing relationships and I try to explain why the possibility of a sex party might be a good way for her to meet a good guy.

  • Ikechukwu Ufomadu is an actor, comedian and entertainer. He trained at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and internationally in The Netherlands and Indonesia. Who would've guessed we'd wind up talking about Buddhism? And so much more! I didn't know a whole lot about Buddhism, so it was fascinating to hear about Ike's practice‚— and which helped me understand why Ike is an original performer, like no other. He has a background in experimental theater from NYU Tisch. When you combine it with his original sense of humor and innate desire to simply entertain you get this: http://www.ikehimself.com/ In my role as Dr. Lisa, I got to find out a lot about Ike. How his father moved back to Nigeria when he was a kid and left him with his siblings and mother in Texas. We also dig into what part of Ike does his character come from and represent? I loved hearing Ike talking about how he came to New York to go to NYU and what that was like for him to be new in such an open town. "I’ve always felt strongly that I should discover things in front of an audience as much as possible. I can promise you that the character and the impulses that guide him are very carefully thought out. The exact moment you see onstage, perhaps not so much." - Ikechukwu Ufomadu

  • Shonali Bhowmik is a musician, actress, comedienne, filmmaker, writer with a law degree! Her bio is extensive, but here's a taste of what she's involved with mostly right now—she co-hosts her own live variety show podcast series called We Don’t Even Know AND she is the leader of the indie rock band Tigers and Monkeys for which she is the songwriter, singer, and guitar player.
I learned so much from this session with Shonali. She creates purely from the need to create and grow. I kicked the emotional tires and she honestly just seems like a naturally happy, yet driven creative person, self-motivated—with a key ingredient—HARD WORK! Oh and a great family, which she appreciates.
Further Bio: She is a member of the popular comedy collective Variety Shac, with Chelsea Peretti, Heather Lawless and Andrea Rosen. Shonali was the host of the Shac’s popular Upright Citizen’s Brigade live show. She has also created television pilots for the Adult Swim and IFC networks. She wrote and directed the short film, Sardines Out Of A Can which was screened in 6 cities across the globe including Madrid, Spain; Bangalore, India and won best romantic comedy short at the Bare Bones International Film Fest 2014. She has her own independent music and comedy record label called Little Lamb Recordings.  She was one of the leaders of Ultrababyfat who was featured in David Cross’ tour DVD Let America Laugh. Shonali has released eight albums including her solo full length release 100 Oaks Revival and those with her rock n’ roll outfits,Tigers and Monkeys and Ultrababyfat. Tigers and Monkeys' newest album Saturday Destroyer was released in September 2018. Shonali can be seen in the feature length romantic comedy, Isn’t It Romantic which was released in February 2019.

  • Kerry Gaertner Gerbracht is a well respected woman in the art world having two degrees in art history (Wellesley College, BA,, Columbia University, MA,) as well as distinguished writing in art publications, various art world committees along with being a member of the feminist panel of Brooklyn Museum. Kerry was an unusually high achiever in school growing up as well as just being so good at everything. She is tall, articulate and outspoken, fearless. We get to find out how someone who is capable at doing everything learns to step back a bit from doing it all in life and at home with her husband and two kids and wound up building her own business, Ver Sacrum FIne Arts Consulting in the process.

  • I really like Jake's work—he's the real deal—no bullshit. He was on the show in 2015 and it was great to catch up and talk about how is career has progressed. He just got back from touring with a cool band Eve 6. Also we had a very thought-provoking talk about polyamory which was great because like I said—it was real. Check out Jake's comedy. I am a fan and I am picky!

More about Jake Flores—he has an interesting background:
Flores was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in Houston.[3] His father, a chemist, is Mexican-American; his mother, who is white, is originally from the Midwest.[3][4][5] He is descended from Juan José Arredondo, a Mexican anarchist who worked with Ricardo Flores Magón during the Mexican Revolution.[3][6]
    Stand-up comedy
Flores began performing comedy in Austin, Texas, when he was 19, after dropping out of the University of Texas at Austin.[1][7][8][9][10] In 2007, he performed in the finals of NBC's Stand Up For Diversity contest.[11] He moved to Brooklyn, New York, at age 27 to further his comedy career.[8][12][13]
Flores is politically leftist and anticapitalist.[5][6][14] His outspokenness has led to controversy. He received national attention when a series of Twitter jokes about Cinco de Mayo, cultural appropriation, and killing ICE agents led to an investigation by Homeland Security, including a visit by several agents to his apartment.[9][15] The incident was written about in publications including Reason and The New York Post,[16] and Flores was interviewed about it on several podcasts including Chapo Trap House.[4][5][11][14] He also discusses the incident on his album Bad Omen.[17]
His comedy takes inspiration from the anarchic energy of punk music; Flores has also called himself a "big fan" of Lenny Bruce, explaining to one interviewer that "like him, I also had a run in with the state over comedy, and am a leftist."[18] Jake Kroeger of website The Comedy Bureau called Flores "hysterical and pointedly different from everyone else".[19] The Bushwick Daily called his comedy "low-key, but subversive".[9]
He has performed across the U.S.,[1] and at festivals including Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest,[20] SXSW,[21] The Fest in Gainesville, Florida,[21] Moontower Comedy Festival,[8] New Orleans' Hell Yes Fest,[22] the touring road show of Comedy Central's Roast Battle,[8][23] and at events for the anti-capitalist streaming service Means TV.[24][25]
He has written for The New York Observer,[26] Cracked,[27] and the New York Times,[28] and has contributed to Vice magazine.[29]

  • My BFF of thirty years, bestselling author and professional tarot card reader, Margot Berwin reads my cards for the first time in two years. I want to find out from her/the cards how my art career is doing. I am frustrated with my career, like every other artist and in this session, I begin to see that it's not always my actual career, it's my emotional problems getting in my way, and things are much better than I have internalized. There's really good thinking about creative careers and a view into my blind spots. You likely have some of the same issues. I felt SO MUCH better after this session. Also, Margot sees a big opportunity in store for me in October too, stay tuned.

  • You can too! These guys are smart, attractive, and talented, plus they make great, widely respected work together without arguing. IS this real? How is it possible that a married couple can make art together without getting at each other’s throat? I kicked the tires and found out A LOT. They both have equally strong personalities and mutual respect folks! They each come from small towns which helps keep the neurosis in check too. We talk about their current show at Postmasters, http://www.postmastersart.com/archive/jcpo19/jcpo19direct.html which, among some larger pieces, has miniature dollhouse type of recreations of horrific historical scenes, many of which are mass suicides such as Jonestown. There’s also a well-researched recreation of In addition delve into some of their projects which involve more craziness such as driving an illegal re-made tour bus around Chelsea giving tours on the art from the bus and selling strange funny art souvenirs. http://www.jenandpaulbustours.com/ And this crazy over-the –top dinner with a elevating table at Allegra La Viola Gallery—Loren Monk/James Kalm video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLUC8lJCs0Y YOU MUST SEE their show at Postmasters – TOO GOOD. • Patty is an excellent visual artist/painter who has just hung a show at Front Room-open until Jan. 6, titled, "Studio Mates", which features 5 pairs of artists who share studios. https://www.frontroomles.com/ We have an engaging and illuminating discussion about what the experience and effect of having a studio mate is on ones art and life. Patty has some great stories about the studio visits she made during the curation of this show. There’s some great stories about Patty’s own studio share with artist Amy Hill. (Here's a Dr. Lisa session with Amy: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/drlisa/episodes/2018-09-25T09_55_52-07_00). We also talk about Patty’s dramatic change of subject in her own work—abstract to an original form of self-portraiture. She says due to her feelings resulting from the election of Donald Trump, but Dr. Lisa pokes around to check if there’s more personal besides her political feelings behind that. More about Patty and her work here: http://patriciafabricant.com/

  • Robert Galinsky’s had a very rough couple of years with his father growing up. His father had undiagnosed depression which as we discussed, he worked through and resolved.
His childhood experiences motivated him to heal and help others has given him a more than full life as an artist: an actor, a writer, director, teacher, coach. Galinsky's suburban life drew him to find out directly how struggling people lived. Galinsky has been running youth writing workshops in Riker's Island for the past 7 years, so he helps us imagine what life is like in Riker's; the teens who are held there what they dream of, how they got there, what they hope to accomplish upon release. After this session, I felt that if there were more Galinsky's and if there was a pipeline for people to become Galinskys, the world would be a better place. When asked about this, Robert says, we're a consumer society and we don't have the will to deal with these issues. I agree, but I will think about incarcerated teens differently because of our talk.

Based on true stories and real people, The Bench, set in urban decay and rubble, explores the emotional heartbreak of five homeless characters and the catastrophic hysteria surrounding AIDS in the late 1980’s. It’s solo theater, where one actor plays five characters, written in dialogue form.
“A slice of life carved from the lower depths. Galinsky brings a wrenching realism to his material." LA Times--
“If you enjoy the work of Anna Deavere Smith or 'Humans of New York" you're in for a treat. Galinsky transforms himself into a living ghost. His vital solo piece, is the most important kind of urban voyeurism. It puts a smile on your lips and moisture in your eyes.” Theater Is Easy
“Director Jay O. Sanders has built a career on roles that are inseparable from the worlds that spawned them; that same sensibility is certain to be in evidence in the play The Bench.” DEADLINE Hollywood
“Galinsky is a theatre operative, impresario, and a bundle of energy and curly black hair.” Wall Street Journal
BIO: Galinsky is a contributing writer to The Fresh Toast, is Head Speaker Coach for TEDxTeen, TEDxFultonStreet, and teaches writing and performance at Rikers Island Jail, through the non-profit Literacy for Incarcerated Teens and GalinskyCoaching.com. His work as an artist activist has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, and on The VIEW, NPR, ABC Nightline News and many media outlets.

  • I had a blast with Kevin Allison in this session. At over a million downloads a month, live shows all over the country, a book and more-RISK! is described as, "a hit podcast where people tell true stories they never thought they'd dare to share." Listen to any episode and you will see what we're saying! It's sooooo exceptional.
Kevin is a professional sharer, so he didn't hold back with Dr. Lisa. He talks about his gay group therapy that shrinks kept quitting, his current shrink, what he's really like vs. the onstage version of Kevin, some of his dating experiences, how relationships with his fellow members of "The State" developed throughout the show, and how there will never be enough downloads to make him happy.

  • Kelsey has played and collaborated with many people; he is known most recently for his recordings as Blak Emoji. He also produced a film and has produced other artists, and did a one-person musical stage performance based on his own life. He has lots of cool stories to tell. Kelsey is a consummate professional on every level—first and foremost his own work. He's super smart about navigating the music business and he has real experience to share. Lots of entertainment, learning and a sampling of Blak Emoji in this powerful session.LISTEN: https://orcd.co/beecFOLLOW: https://www.instagram.com/blak.emoji/WEBSITE: https://www.blakemoji.com/WATCH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQRzhUzTsBsBIO: BLAK EMOJIBlak Emoji is the brainchild of NYC producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Kelsey Warren. Blending pop inspirations with an emphasis on electronic music, synth sounds and intricate writing, Kelsey's sonic dream is brought to life. The debut Blak Emoji EP, "INTRO" (2017) was the first of several releases with two albums, a sophomore EP and the latest album "ECLECTRO." Warren has received a variety of accolades from notable publications including Rolling Stone, Afro-Punk, Line Best Of Fit, BUST, Clash Magazine, Vampire Freaks and Tape Op. Blak Emoji songs "Velvet Ropes & Dive Bars" and "Poison To Medicine" made their way to ABC's Quantico while "Sapiosexual" appeared in several indie films.Warren was immersed in soul/R&B and pop music growing up in South Jersey. But after learning piano concertos, jazz guitar standards, drums and other instruments, Warren became addicted to hip-hop, punk, minimalist classical. He supplemented his ever-expanding musical taste with a dense love of electronic music and synth inspiration from Kraftwerk to Prince to NIN.Quarantine didn't prove to slow down Warren who spent the duration of the pandemic producing numerous artists and directing music videos. He dropped an avant-electronic instrumental Blak Emoji album called "Antidote". In 2022, Blak Emoji was signed to ECR Music Group. The first single release after joining the ECR label is "MAINSTAY," which is one of his most successful to date. This February, ECR will release a deluxe edition of "ECLECTRO" with bonus tracks.
