In this conversation, I am honoured to sit down and chat with Adrian Fletcher. Adrian is a licensed psychologist, author, and survivor with lived experience of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. She also uses the name Adrienne & Co.System to reflect a DID system of 22 + parts. She discusses discusses the complexities of living with the condition, the challenges of diagnosis, and the importance of understanding and support from both therapists and the general public. She emphasizes the need for trauma-informed care and the significance of advocacy in breaking down stigma surrounding DID.
*Correction: in the audio its 1-3% of the population is suspected to live with it, not one in three.
takeaways
DID is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed, leading to a lack of appropriate treatment. The average age of diagnosis for DID is around 37 years old. Many people living with DID are unaware of their condition until later in life.DID is a response to extreme and ongoing trauma, not a result of a single incident. The media often misrepresents DID, contributing to stigma and misunderstanding.Therapists need to be flexible and trauma-informed to effectively support clients with DID.It's crucial for individuals with DID to communicate and check in with their parts regularly.Advocacy and education are essential in changing public perception of DID.Living with DID can lead to a complex relationship with identity and self-perception.Support from family and friends is vital for those living with DID.Follow Adrian on IG

In this conversation, Monique Koven and Dr. Aimie Apigian discuss the topic of overwhelm and how it relates to trauma and our nervous system. They explore the concept of overwhelm as a trauma response and the ways in which our body tries to protect us from it. They also discuss the role of parts work in addressing overwhelm and how to work with the protector parts that prevent us from accessing the younger, overwhelmed parts. Aimie emphasizes the importance of collaboration and building trust with these parts. They also touch on the integration of biology, somatic work, and parts work in the healing journey
Overwhelm is a trauma response that is different for trauma survivors compared to those who do not have a history of trauma. Our body remembers past experiences of overwhelm and tries to protect us from experiencing it again.Parts work is a tool for addressing overwhelm and involves working with the protector parts that prevent us from accessing the younger, overwhelmed parts.Collaboration and building trust with these parts is essential in the healing process. The integration of biology, somatic work, and parts work is important in addressing overwhelm and building a foundation of regulation.

Emotional immaturity can manifest in various relationships, including parent-child relationships, romantic relationships, and friendships.
Emotional immaturity is characterized by egocentrism and poor empathy, where individuals prioritize their own needs and emotions over others.Emotional maturity is a continuum, and individuals can exhibit emotional immaturity in certain areas while being mature in others.Hope is important in dealing with emotionally immature individuals, but it is also important to recognize and set boundaries to protect oneself. Those raised by emotionally immature parents may have developed skills in caretaking and empathy, but it is important for them to prioritize their own needs and establish healthy boundaries in relationships.Listening to one's body and recognizing how relationships make them feel can help identify emotionally draining or unhealthy dynamics.Dr. Lindsay C Gibson's Books

You cannot to heal from Trauma until you gently learn to become friends with your nervous system. May survivors have adapted to trauma by shutting down or disconnecting from their feelings and sensations. This makes sense when you live in a dangerous and threatening environment. However the patterns of disconnection remain long after the trauma is over.
Welcome to a brand new season of The Healing Trauma Podcast. In this first healing trauma conversation, host Monique Koven and Trauma expert Deb Dana discuss the Polyvagal theory and trauma healing. They emphasize the importance of understanding the nervous system and how it shapes our experiences. They highlight the need to start making the nervous system a friend, rather than trying to solve problems without considering its role. They discuss the concept of glimmers, which are small moments of safety and regulation that can reshape the nervous system. Glimmers are seen as a way to build capacity for processing trauma and unresolved experiences..

In this conversation, Monique Koven and Alison Cook discuss the importance of acknowledging and embracing our emotions rather than brushing them aside or numbing them. They explore the concept of naming our emotions as a way to bring order and relief to our inner world. They emphasize the need for self-compassion and curiosity when it comes to our emotions, and the importance of pausing and reflecting before taking action. The conversation also touches on the healing journey of trauma survivors and the role of framing our emotions in a healthy way. Overall, the conversation highlights the practices of naming, awareness, framing, and braving as essential tools for emotional well-being.Key words emotions, naming, order, relief, self-compassion, curiosity, pausing, reflecting, trauma, healing, framing, braving, emotional. The conversation is based on themes in Alision’s new book “ I Shouldn’t Feel This Way.” Takeaways Acknowledging and embracing our emotions is important for our emotional well-being. Naming our emotions brings order and relief to our inner world. Self-compassion and curiosity are key in dealing with our emotions. Pausing and reflecting before taking action allows for wiser decision-making. The healing journey of trauma survivors involves learning to name and honor their emotions. Framing our emotions in a healthy way helps us understand and respond to them effectively. Braving involves taking action based on our emotional awareness and understanding. Embracing Our Emotions: The Key to Emotional Well-being Healing Trauma: Learning to Name and Honor Our Emotions "I shouldn't feel this way has become for me a little bit of a, oh, I feel something. I feel something I don't want to feel." "The truth sets us free. This is what I feel. I'm not gaslighting myself. I'm not trying to dupe myself into not feeling what I really feel." "Numbing is to try to keep those emotions outside of our conscious awareness. Naming is bringing them up into the surface and looking at them."Dr. Alison Cook's Website & Resources dralisoncook.com
