Today, I want to share with you about Chapter 11 of my new book, From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership.
I spend a lot of time in the book talking about the need to hit the reset button when you're transitioning from military to industry. But in this chapter, Taking the Helm in a Crisis, I share my own story from September 11 and explain the situations where your military expertise specific to crises can translate to your work in the industry space — and even set you up for better success than your non-military counterparts.
Hear more on managing a crisis in this video and get your copy of my new book on April 5!

Every organization is structured to defend itself. Sometimes you'll find yourself in a difficult situation where you need to defend your organization against false blame. What should you do?
I address that scenario in Chapter 10 of my book, From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership.
In the "Defending a Legacy," chapter, I share a couple of stories from my own experience that were extremely challenging. I also discuss how you should respond when you win the argument. Listen for more and pre-order your copy of the book at williamtotibook.com

Do you think your military title will be a help or a hindrance when you enter the civilian workforce?
In Chapter 8 of my book, From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership, I talk about the remaking of a leader and the biases that may exist in the corporate world against those coming out of a military career. In this excerpt from the chapter, I share a story about it happening to me and five important ways to distinguish yourself without pulling rank in your industry job.

Today's podcast covers Chapter 7 from my new book, From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership.
I share a personal story from my service that highlights a stark contrast between the Army and Navy. But as many differences as there are, those branches are still more closely aligned than the military culture is to the civilian culture.
Listen in to hear more about the focus for Chapter 7 — Mastering New Skills — and the importance of thinking about your transition into industry as starting over again.

In this podcast, I share about Chapter 6 from my new book, From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership. This chapter covers the mechanics of searching for a job, preparing your resume, interfacing with recruiters/head hunters, applying for the job, interviewing, negotiating compensation and accepting the offer.
In this sneak peek, I also reinforce a point I made in a previous podcast. You need to think less about what the current position offers and think more about where you want to be in 10-15 years and if this position helps you get there. It's an important distinction.

Want to find out if my new book, From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership, is right for you?
In Chapter 5, I share some potential career options, but also a story about how my mother's father immigrated to America. This is a story that I always come back to as a reminder that no matter how tough I think I have it, I don't have it as tough as many others.
Transition from active duty to industry is going to be difficult, but I hope this chapter — and the book — helps you keep things in perspective. Coming April 5! For more info, see https://williamtoti.com

In chapter three of my book, "From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership," I share about the things I wish I knew back when.
In this podcast, you'll hear a story about when I selected my Eagle Scout project as a 15-year-old and the advice my Scout Master gave me. Even though I didn't fully understand what he meant at the time, I understood after the project and it's something that still resonates with me today.
The lessons I lay out in this chapter changed my view of humanity, specifically when it comes to the transition from military to industry. Tune in as I go through a few of these lessons and pre-order your copy of the book today at williamtoti.com

How much runway do you have left?
That's a question in the corporate world that may determine how much business owners are likely to invest time and money in developing you as an employee — or whether they hire you at all...
I cover this in Chapter 2 of my book "From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership." The fact is the later you transition to the civilian workforce, the less time an employer has to get a return on investment, but that doesn't mean it's time to jump ship early.
The right answer's different for everyone, so check this out and learn more at williamtotibook.com
