  • Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

This episode features an extended conversation with my dear friend Michael Shapiro, who I wouldn't know if it wasn't for an introduction from Crossover Media's Amanda back at the start of Harmonious World. As well as our previous two interviews in 2020 and 2021, I have spent time with Michael in Milan (where his Frankenstein score was performed) and several times in London. His musical passion, intellect and wit come across - I hope - in this latest episode.

Alongside our conversation, you can hear extracts from Michael's flute concerto In The Light Of The Sun , performed by my previous guest Stathis Karapanos.

Don't forget the Quincy Jones quote that sums up why I do this: "Imagine what a harmonious world it would be if every single person, both young and old, shared a little of what he is good at doing."

For this episode, I interviewed bass player and composer Matt Booth. I spoke to Matt as part of Extended Trio in 2022 for episode 120 and it was good to chat with him this time about his own album of tracks, many of which were written during lockdown.

For this episode, I interviewed singer, songwriter and pianist Philippa Healey. A successful and impressive performer on London's West End stage and in classical crossover, Philippa has new recordings out now that show her funky side. There's a humorous side to her lyrics and it was great fun to chat with her.

  • Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

For this episode, I interviewed Grammy-winning guitarist Sharon Isbin for the second time. The first was way back in August 2020, and she's been busy since then, creating wonderful music and working tirelessly with the Aspen Music Festival, which this year celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Sharon shared with me her album Live in Aspen, featuring her guitar alongside legendary sarod masters Amjad Ali Khan, Amman and Ayaan Ali Bangash, together with tabla virtuoso Amit Kavthekar. Alongside our conversation, you can hear extracts from the tracks from this fabulous album.

For this episode, I visited club owner Steve Rubie at the fabulous 606 Club in London's Chelsea. Steve is also a sax player, and I have known him for MANY years, since he kindly allowed me to practise in the basement club when it was originally on the Kings Road.

  • Welcome to the trailer for season 18 of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

For those of you who don’t know who I am, my name is Hilary Seabrook and I’m a writer, podcaster and musician (with a little teaching thrown in).

You can find out more about me on my blog - just search for Hilary Seabrook blog and you’ll find it, plus there’s a link in the show notes. You will also find there lots of album and gig reviews

Season 17 was another great one, and you can see a summary of it on my blog. In fact, you can see summaries of all seasons, so it’s easier to catch up with any of the episodes you may have missed.

Season 18 promises to deliver lots more great interviews with extraordinary musicians, with some already recorded and a few more amazing guests scheduled in for the next couple of months.

Thanks once again to Joe English for my theme tune, which you can hear now.

If you want to know the names of guests in advance and suggest some questions, you’ll need to subscribe! Another subscriber bonus is a cute key ring and maybe even a pen.

  • Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I interview musicians about how their music helps make the world more harmonious.

For this episode, I interviewed flautist Stathis Karapanos, who has new music out now - both Hindemith's Complete Works for Flute and also Michael Shapiro's sublime 'In the Light of the Sun' concerto for flute and orchestra, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road studios earlier this year.

Thanks to Stathis for allowing me to share clips from his recordings of 'Echo' for Flute and Piano, 'Enthusiasm' for Flute and Viola and 'Abundskonzert Nr2' alongside our conversation.

  • Saxophonist Bjorn Arko is extraordinary and - after hearing him play with legendary drummer Billy Cobham at Love Supreme in July - I tracked him down and asked for an interview. The latest episode of Harmonious World is the result.

Thanks to Bjorn, you can hear a couple of his most recent tracks alongside our conversation and he tells me there's a new album in the pipeline.

This time, I'm joined by accordionist Glenn Hartman, one of the founding members of the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars. Their new album - Tipish - is out now.

  • This was my second conversation with Danae Xanthe Vlasse, a composer who is simply extraordinary. Her album Mythologies won a Grammy in 2022 and now Mythologies II is out, featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, sopranos Sangeeta Kaur and Hila Plitmann, tenor Omar Najmi and pianist Robert Thies.

I was so fortunate in being present at Abbey Road studios when some of this album was recorded, thanks to Danae and Maestro Michael Shapiro, my dear friend who invited me along to see him conduct this magnificent music.

This conversation was a delight to record and I'm looking forward to travelling to New York at some point to see Danae again and hopefully experience this music on stage. Thanks to Danae for allowing me to include some clips from Mythologies II alongside our conversation.

  • Welcome to a very special episode of Harmonious World, in which I speak to the team behind the Great British Music Camp, as well as tutors and campers. GBMC is a very special place and if the quality of recording is not always perfect, I make no apology for the background noise of young people having fun and making music.

GBMC is all about collaboration and creativity and I hope this helps you get a taste of how amazing the last week has been.

  • As if it's not enough that Aleksi Glick has appeared twice already on Harmonious World (in 2020 and in 2022), but this episode features two separate interviews: one online a few weeks ago and then a brief chat over a cuppa in Cambridge earlier this week.

Aleksi and I had a good chat online about his latest album - World Traveler. Then in person I asked him the question that I'll now be asking of all my guests: "What piece of advice or learning would you share to make the world a little more harmonious?"

Thank you to Aleksi for allowing me to play a selection of tracks from World Traveler alongside our conversation.

  • This is, coincidentally, the third in a series of episodes featuring past guests and it's been another fascinating opportunity to chat with a musician about their life and work both during and following the pandemic. With pianist and composer Craig Urquhart, I was able to actually discuss the album - Renewal - which was released in 2023 but written in 2022, around the time we spoke for the first time.

Although our first conversation was online, this one was live in a coffee bar in Berlin and it was such a delight.

Thank you to Craig for allowing me to play a couple of tracks from Renewal, and please do check out my blog, where there is a review.

  • Once more, I'm joined by a previous guest. This time it's pianist Marina Arsenijevic, who has an album out that celebrates her obsession with Chopin.

Marina and I discuss her recording technique, future works and - of course - her obsession with Chopin and how it resulted in this album: Chopin Obsession.

Thank you to Marina for allowing me to play a selection of the pieces recorded on this album - maybe you'll recognise some snatches.
