What makes a bear dog?
What traits do bear hunters need in a hound to successfully track, trail and catch the American Black Bear?
Chris travels to Greeneville, Tennessee to the American Plott Association’s annual Breed Days. Breed Days is held in the heart of bear bear hunting country. Chris calls it the “cradle of Civilization for North American bear hunting”. Greenville is situated at the foot of the Great Smokey Mountains and is in the heart of Appalachia.
In this episode listeners will hear from legendary bear hunters. These men have hundreds of years of combined experience in hunting black bear and breeding top bear dogs. Men like Ira Jones, Roy Clark, Ray and James Brown and Rodney Burris share their experience with the hunting public in this one of a kind episode. The Plott Historian, John Jackson, shares his views and perspective.

In a world where people are working hard to be InstaCelebrities, Facebook Famous and host their own YouTube channel, Butch Spear is a bear hunting celebrity without even trying and probably against his will.
Butch found himself thrust onto the world stage by a YouTube channel producer with over 2 million followers. He was only trying to retrieve his bear dogs from a piece of private property. While he legally could have entered the property to get his hounds that were treed, he chose to go to the land owner out of courtesy and respect to inform him of what was happening. What happened next was beyond his wildest expectations. The YouTube channel owner got more than he bargained for as well. Butch Spear is the president of the Vermont Bearhound Association and was well equipped to handle the situation.

In this episode of Houndsman XP, Chris and Steve stretch the “Xtreme” credo to the max with a visit to the South Texas ranch country to hunt bobcats with Professional Bull Riders (PBR) celebrity, bullfighter Shorty Gorham. Shorty is not only known the world over for his professional bullfighting and his popular bullfighting circuit and company American Freestyle Bullfighting, but also for his crack pack of running Walker cat hounds. Chris and Steve see firsthand how Shorty’s hounds approach their big cat-catching work with every bit the energy and gusto that their master exhibits in the bull ring.
Gorham, growing up on a southern California ranch was in his words, “a cowboy in a surfer school.” Being a guy that has always met danger head on, Shorty has been a natural at fighting 1,700-pound tornados in bull flesh, major event after thrilling major bull riding event. Learning that Shorty was also an accomplished houndsman, Chris and Steve, with an introduction by Carnivore TV producer and former Houndsman XP guest Gary Roberson, seized the opportunity to go to Texas to hunt with and to interview Shorty Gorham, a major win for the Houndsman XP audience.
In this episode, recorded mid-hunt on a south Texas afternoon, the boys are joined by Gorham and Roberson in what is an interesting and very entertaining look at the exciting and very dangerous world of bull riding. They also dig deep into the background and abilities of the pack of running-stock hounds Gorham uses to consistently catch bobcats and mountain lions for his enjoyment and for that of the clients that book guided hunts with him. Airing on the week of the PBR World Finals are held in Las Vegas, listeners will be able to closely identify with the TV coverage of the epic event. Lee Currens is one of the best-known personalities in the wide world of coonhounds. Noted for his big-winning Treeing Walkers at major coonhound shows, Currens is a strong proponent of dual-purpose hounds that hunt as good as they look. Growing up on a central Kentucky dairy farm, Currens developed a skill set for showing livestock early on with his family’s registered Jersey cattle. Always taking pride in the animals he presented, the transition to coonhound showing and winning big while doing so, was an easy transition.
In this interview Chris and Steve cover myriad subjects with Currens including coon hunting as a boy on the Kentucky River, attending early competition hunts, meeting and hunting with many of coon hunting’s most famous personalities, John Monroe, Elmer Harrod and Billy Stinson to name a few, and his involvement in building foundations of popular strains of Treeing Walkers that endure today. Lee discusses his commitment to never hunt an ugly dog. Perhaps his crowning achievement is revealed in discussions about his mentoring several young people into the lifestyle.
The interview spotlights a side of the guest that his extensive exposure as a show person has not revealed before.
