Two weeks ago, Griffin Luce was balancing life as a student athlete, enduring grueling practices, and excited to see how far he and his teammates could go in his final season as a college athlete. He was given a couple of days to pack up his things, leave campus, and finish out the semester at home. Life as he and his teammates knew it was over. With such a sudden and dramatic change to his life, it would be understandable if Griffin were looking hard at the past and what could have been in the future. Instead, he is looking to the future, focusing on the joy in spending time with his family, and finding ways to continue to connect with his teammates.

Show Notes:
Rebecca talks about the the role being athlete played when she was a kid, and how being an athlete quickly became her identity when she was young. [4:40]Why did Rebecca push herself so hard to swim when she was a young? [5:45]Rebeccaâs road to swimming at USC on a full scholarship and how her college experience was shaped by swimming. [6:05]What was it like to go to the Beijing Olympics as a college student, and come home with three Olympic medals? [7:00]The Beijing Olympics coincided with Twitterâs rise. What was it like to be on the US swimming team at a time when it was rocketing to fame with teammates like Michael Phelps, and your popularity was directly correlated to your medal? [11:00]What it was like to go back to college swimming after the 2008 Olympics. [12:08]Rebecca needs to decide if sheâs going to go for another Olympic cycle after she finishes college. She didnât have any other obvious options, but eventually decided to keep training for the next Olympics and try to break the world record in the 200m breaststroke while hiking a mountain in Honolulu. [13:10]Going into the 2012 Olympics, Soni was pretty sure it was her last Olympic cycle. She didnât know what was coming after retirement, but how did she know she was done training? After seeing how the media treated star athletes, Rebecca realized she could never really win. [15:38]Rebeccaâs sponsorship deals made it possible for her to swim professionally, but they all came at a cost. [17:33]What it was like to feel like tying her worth into her swimming performance, and feeling like she wasnât living up to the athlete identity she had been given. [19:00]How gracious Rebecca is to Ruta, who ended up winning gold in the 100m breastroke at the 2012 London Olympics. She describes that race as the perfect example of how great the Olympics are. [20:00]Rebecca describes how she got through her mental block leading up to the 200m breaststroke final at the 2012 Olympics, which ultimately led to her interest in positive psychology and mindset in sport. âI donât know how, but Iâm going to do it anyway.â [21:05]Rebecca describes being shocked that she broke the world record in the 200m breastroke, and realizing that she was the first woman to break 2:20 in the event. [24:17]How the 2012 Olympic experience was a little more fun than her first Olympics. [25:45]After London, Soni was living in LA getting invites to media events, but did not want to attend any of them [16:40]What was it like to leave a sport to which she had assigned her identity? âTo lose or shift an identity is excruciating.â How she spent the first few months after retiring, grappling with the fact that she didnât know the answer to the question, âWhat do you do?â [27:30]Who was Rebecca outside of âRebecca the Swimmer?â [29:10]How Rebecca began to explore who else she was outside of her athlete identity, and realizing the huge role that swimming played in her life. [30:45]As Rebecca looked back on her career, she began to get curious about how she became so dominant in a sport where she was not at an obvious physical advantage. She became interested in the role of mindset and positive psychology. [31:38]How Rebeccaâs interest in positive psychology and experience during her swimming career led her to start RISE Athletes in order to help young athletes develop the mental side of the game. [32:00]Rebecca discusses the importance of hiring Olympians at RISE in order to give them the experience of mentoring the future generation of athletes, and how that benefits both the mentors and mentees in confidence. [33:45]Does Rebecca have more moving on to do? [34:40]Rebecca is now reflecting on the pressure she places on herself to give back to athletics, even though it has never been asked of her. Is it because she doesnât know her value anywhere else? [35:15]Emotions. Why were they suppressed during Rebeccaâs swimming career? And what was the process of getting more in touch with her emotions after she retired? [37:00]What it was like for Rebecca to lean into her more feminine side (and sheâs not talking about male vs. female, but allowing herself to find softness in herself and giving herself space to back off.) [39:45]How emotions in sport are traditionally not given much value, which led to Rebecca suffocating her emotions, resulting in inevitable blowups. She is now working hard to value her emotions (and herself). [41:30]How Rebecca found yoga and really got into the philosophy of yoga. [45:00]Whatâs Rebeccaâs relationship now with her athlete identity? [48:20]In terms of whatâs next, Rebecca really believes that she needs to experience the death of what was in order to experience the birth of whatâs coming. [51:50]How Rebecca structures her life now. [53:25] -

Natalie Dell O'Brien won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics in the Womenâs Quadruple Sculls and took home the first ever medal in the event for the US. She has integrated her experience from elite rowing into her new career climbing up the ladder at Google smoother than most. While Natalie's transition from elite rowing seems ideal, it was not without its challenges. Natalie's approach to the transition and how she uses her experience as an elite athlete to her advantage in the business world is downright inspiring. Her story shows that a good transition does not have to be picture perfect.

Karen Kraft Rigsby is a former Olympic silver and bronze medalist in the women's pair in rowing, survivor of battles with cancer after each Olympic cycle, a badass yogi, and a very proud mom. In between teaching yoga classes, Karen sat down and told her story like it's never been told before. She describes how she was an unlikely Olympian, starting as an architecture major at Cal Poly, and she fought for every inch of her success, spending hundreds of hours training alone in a basement only to be turned away from the national team. Karen's perspective on what her decade-long journey means to her now, and how hot yoga can give you the same relief as rowing does, is a lesson in keeping things in perspective when it feels like the cards are stacked against you.

Fergus Connolly is a performance expert who has worked with professional sports teams around the world. Fergus sat down with Erin and Kristin and talked about how he believes that the role of sport is preparing people for the challenges of life. He has made a career out of working with all different types of athletes, special operators and personnel. Fergus has published two books on performance and team dynamics and has a really good insight into not only how athletes can train and perform better, but simultaneously prepare themselves for life after. Fergus gets into the dangers of specializing in one specific area and how that may be our greatest threat to adaptability. Fergus is amazing at is creating models for navigating the world which can help us understand how we as humans and athletes can evolve, adapt, and come out better on the backside of performance.

Anik Wild is a former X Games champion in skicross, businesswoman, and proud mom. She competed for over 30 years in downhill ski racing and 10 months before the 2010 Olympics, she was forced to retire from her sport due to the cumulative effects of her multiple concussions. Anik sat down with Erin and Kristin in Truckee, CA, where she currently lives with her husband and son to talk about the love of competing, the heartache of having to leave her dream of an Olympic medal on the table, and the joy of being a mom and lifelong athlete. Anik is pursuing life after sport with just as much intensity as she did her career as a skicross racer, but the process of leaving active competition has been a long emotional journey and is the first to admit that she's not completely over it.

Kristin Haraldsdottir is a former NCAA National Champion in rowing, Division I Coach, PhD in Exercise Physiology and co-host of the humbled Podcast. Kristinâs story of becoming great at something, looking to share that joy with someone else and searching for another challenging outlet is a common evolution of the retired athlete. Kristin speaks eloquently to her experience stepping away from her sport from the athlete, coach and research perspective: the battle of trying to find the same challenge and camaraderie as an athlete, her research to find better solutions for athlete recovery and wellness, and her hopes for the listeners and athletes on the Humbled podcast.
