  • As Artificial Intelligence continues to be ever more present in podcasting, discussions and conversations have appeared online at an equal rate on whether this is a good or bad thing for the podcasting industry.

Does it make life easier when it comes to creating content, or does it run the risk of making podcasting redundant through an increased lack of originality?

  • It used to be that podcast downloads were the main data point podcasters would use to track their growth. The thinking was, get X amount of downloads per month and sponsors will jump at you with wallets full of cash. While that may have been the way back in the day, today's success metrics looks a lot different when it comes to podcast success.

In this special live recording of In & Around Podcasting from PodSummit YYC 2024 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Danny is joined by Kattie Laur and Tim Truax to talk about how you can take advantage of them, and reframe your thinking and discussion around monetization and sponsorship.

    Takeaways:

The podcasting industry is evolving, and metrics should extend beyond just downloads. Engaged listeners are more valuable than sheer download numbers when seeking sponsorships. Indie podcasters should focus on local sponsorships to create meaningful monetization opportunities. Understanding your audience's engagement can help shape your content and sponsorship strategies. Value for value models allow listeners to support creators without traditional sponsorships. Experimenting with different ad formats can improve listener retention and engagement rates.

  • Currently, if a podcaster wants to get the full picture of their show's growth, they need to look at multiple analytics reports: their hosting company, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and now YouTube. Then they need to correlate how all this data is presented, since it can be very different, depending on IAB Certification, downloads, listens, and more. And that's just the podcaster - then you have media and ad buyer data, too.

So how do we bring all this convoluted data together, and where do podcast analytics need to improve to give that fuller picture? Join your host Danny Brown and guest co-host Dan Misener as they dive in to podcasting's analytics problem.

  • In the June 3 edition of industry publication Podnews, editor James Cridland reported on the rumour of "a large podcast hosting company having an all-hands meeting with the news that they'd found a buyer for the company."

There's also industry rumours of at least three hosting companies either looking for buyers or open to buyer approaches. We've seen podcast hosting companies either close or be acquired before: Spotify bought Anchor and Megaphone, and Global acquired Captivate, as some examples.

So with the rumour mill around more acquisitions currently red-hot, does this mean podcast hosting is in a boom & bust period? Or is it just a sign of a medium continuing to mature and take advantage of good opportunities?

  • At the end of March this year, industry publication Podnews published its annual Podnews Report Card. This asks podcasters to complete a scorecard on podcast platforms, and where they're doing well, and where they're doing not so well.

Across the board, all main platforms - Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon Music - had a lower score than last year when it came to helping listeners discover and follow a podcast.

  • Spotify recently announced they've ceased their membership of the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau), which has long been seen as the standard for the podcast industry when it comes to analytics and measurement.

This announcement means Spotify for Podcasters (previously Anchor), Megaphone, and Chartable are no longer IAB Certified.

With the industry looking to standardize podcast measurement for both podcasters and sponsors/ad buyers, what now for the industry, with such a big player leaving the current standard?

  • Many podcasts don't make it past episode five, according to new data from the Podcast Index. In this episode, Mark, Danny, Dave Jackson, and Ashley Hamer discuss the challenges and misconceptions surrounding podcasting.

    Takeaways

Many podcasts don't make it past episode five, possibly due to the rise of free podcast hosting platforms like Anchor, now Spotify for Podcasters. The lack of immediate feedback and community engagement in podcasting can be disheartening for new podcasters. The influx of celebrity podcasts and the perception of difficulty in getting noticed may discourage indie podcasters. To overcome these challenges, podcasters should focus on their internal motivation, have a long list of episode topics, and plan for breaks or hiatuses.Setting realistic expectations is crucial in podcasting, as it takes time and effort to grow an audience and make money.Podcasting is not a quick way to make six figures, and it's important to focus on creating valuable content and building a loyal audience.

    Our co-hosts this week:
