Our latest podcast episode introduces Samantha Ong, the innovative CEO of Joeydolls, celebrating the diversity and beauty of the Asian diaspora. www.inthedollworld.com
Samantha's story begins with a simple desire - to create dolls that reflected her daughter's Asian heritage. Frustrated with the lack of diversity in the toy market, she embarked on a journey to make dolls that would allow children of Asian descent to see themselves in the toys they play with.
Joeydolls are more than just dolls, they are lifelines connecting children with their heritage. They are sources of comfort for mixed families, adopted children, and those getting accustomed to new environments.
Samantha's work has instilled a sense of belonging in these children, subverting societal messages that often devalue people of darker skin tones. Her story is a testament to what can be achieved with determination, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the power of representation.

Another wonderful In The Doll World show with my guest Aniqua Wilkerson, Fiber Doll Artist and Owner of My Kinda Thing. (Pt.1) www.inthedollworld.com
What a great and purposeful doll journey Anqiua's shares with us, the educator is definitely in the house. As the third child of seven children, creativity was always encouraged in her house growing up and Aniqua always had dolls to play with, from the time she can remember, but did not have her first black doll until she was eight years old.
In the conversation she shares that when she did get the black doll, she literally could not put it down, carrying it everywhere, protecting her doll but on some level, she believe she was protecting and caring for herself as well.
She is a self-taught crochet artist. She became interested in crochet at around 19 years old, when her cousin found some old fiber arts books and has spent most of her adult career as a teacher, using art to be a more effective educator. She loved teaching but was a little disheartened with the education system and wanted to so something else with art and so as she listened to her nieces and their friends talk about how they felt about themselves, and not always in a positive light, she wanted to embark on something that would help them to see how truly beautiful they were.
We also get to talk about another proud moment in her life and how this excellent opportunity of working with Lion Brand and introducing Skien Tones came about.
Aniqua uses crochet as a tool to teach and promote self-esteem in girls, particularly girls of color and help to impart a sense of pride in the lives of young girls and women through art and dolls.

Flora shares with us her inspiration for creating Corage Dolls, out of her experience of watching the documentary âGril Like Meâ. She was struck by the lack of positive diverse representation in media and products had on black children and even though this âdoll experimentâ was done more recently than the historical âDoll Testâ done by Dr. Kenneth and Mamie Clark, the results we unfortunately just as troubling.
As Flora shares in her interview, she wanted to do something about it and create a doll that had a strong sense of herself, an unstoppable spirit and offer information about diverse careers, build sistership and advocate for the empowerment of girls of color.
We also talk about her devastating loss of all the work she created due to a bad manufacturing experience and how she had to start all over.
Despite that experience, bad supply chains during COVID and more she has been constantly driven to move forward to create multicultural dolls and books that encourage girls of color to be unstoppable.

A delightful interview with Evelyn Smith aka Evalina, owner of Evergreen Art Dolls and silicone doll artist. From animal science to doll making, her journey has been just as eclectic as the wonderful doll she makes. www.inthedollworld.com
Growing up she loved sci-fi, art and animals, so itâs no surprise she has found a way to marry the three.Although she loved playing with dolls and being creative, she didnât stumble upon the true doll world until 2017 while in graduate school, working on her masterâs in animal science.
Her love for everything sci-fi led her to this seeing this beautiful silicon Avatar doll and wanting to own one herself, she looked up the price, realized it was way too expensive for her college student budget, she decided to make her own and here is where her doll artist journey began.
Evalina shares with ITDW how she learned her craft from watching many videos, and now creates beautiful and whimsical silicone art dolls, ranging from Avatars to fairies to baby dinosaurs to trolls. She also talks about what has been the most challenging to the most rewarding in being a doll artist and shares what other mediums she would be excited to work in.

What a wonderful conversation with Debra Pounds, Doll Artist and owner of Paddlefootz Dolls & Thangs www.inthedollworld.com
Debra shares how in 1997 a request from her mother for a Black Santa lead her to crafting but it was after the many conversations with her sister on how hard it had been and still was to find black dolls that were true, cute, and beautiful reflections of us as Black people for her nieces, and her daughters that led her to her doll creating. We also talk about the approach she takes to create her beautiful dolls, what dictates the design and the look each doll has.
She also shares how COVID really affected her business and forced her to shut down, and the challenges that came with that and how the lingering effects of that are still affecting her business today, but the love she has for creating dolls has been her saving grace and she still continues to inspire us with her amazing creations.
As a self-taught artist, she prides herself in learning a skill she can pass on to others in helping them to create dolls, so the opportunity to teach what she knows in how to create her dolls, has opened up a new area that she is now moving forward in.

Another FANGIRL moment for me at IDTW. What a fantastic time spent with Ms. Yla Eason, creator of Sun-Man, the first Black superhero action figure and owner of Olmec Toys. www.inthedollworld.com
Ms. Eason is an award-winning educator and entrepreneur who is largely credited with pioneering the ethnic toy market at mass market stores. As an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at Rutgers University, her focus is Business Communications, Multicultural Marketing, and Digital Marketing.
Over 40 years ago a comment by her 3-year-old son and the love she had for him, changed the trajectory of her life and the lives of many children of color across the globe. Her son at 3 years old, made the comment, he couldnât be a superhero because he was black. Dismayed after searching for a black superhero, she discovered, there was no such thing.
Ms. Eason stated, âThe intention was to give positive Black presentation in imagination and creativity,â
Yla shares with us her journey of what it was like stepping into that arena with no prior experience in the toy industry and how when the Universe calls you, other people are put along your path to make that happen for you.
Yla also talks about some of her biggest challenges, the unique way she presented to the investors and why sometimes, ignorance can be bliss.
She also admits it wasnât a piece of cake but for many reasons we talk about during our conversation, including the reason for her doing this and the fascination of what it took to get it created, helped her to keep going.
Now 40 years later, Sun-Man was reintroduced to another generation of children in 2022 as he was included as part of the expansion of He-Man, the Masters of the Universe on the 40th Anniversary of He-Man.

Soon after that, Dr. Gilmore, said the âMy Friend' doll came to me in a dream," She felt it was a sign and Gilmore got to work, developing a company focused on young Black boys to present to her son as a surprise on his 8th birthday.
It was important to LiL Dee to have the doll say positive affirmations to help people who speak negatively about themselves, to learn to speak more positive and kind things about who they are.
The doll is created in LiL Deeâs likeness, and he shares with us how he feels about having a doll that looks like him out in the world, although he was not thrilled with the first prototype, he voiced his opinion on changes and created a doll that he was happy to share with others.
LiL Dee has big visions for his My Friend doll and the Our Brown Boy Joy company that he shares with us as well. I have no doubt he will see his visions become reality and continue to expand and empower his company and be a major player within the doll world.

A fun and phenomenal interview with Sandra Epps, artist and author. Founder of Sandyâs Land LLC an entertainment service and the Detroit Doll Show. www.inthedollworld.com
As a creative force and a survivor of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), a disease where the immune system attacks both the body tissue and organs, Sandra continues to use her strength, resiliency, passion, and creativity in celebrating history, culture, self-love, and diversity with the promotion of dolls of color and through her art.
Sandra shares with us how a âone-timeâ event she created to inspire and support her niece during a time when she was feeling not represented and bullied about the way she looked turned into a powerful event that not only helped to showcase black doll artists but increase the self-esteem in so many young girls and women.
She also shared how her triumph over lupus also inspired her first self-published childrenâs book -- Imani Has the Most Exciting Dream! to assist children who are faced with adversities to transform their fear into faith. Her second book, Girl Power Discover the Princess Within provide key tools to help build a girlâs self-esteem with tips to defuse a bullyâs action, ignite self-love, fun journaling and how to develop healthy friendshipâs. And most recently Epps has written, Girlfriend, Itâs Time to SOAR! A Work Journal for Personal Transformation to help women to affirm their success, prompt positive introspection and get focused on living their best life at any age. The book also includes her artwork that celebrates women and the transcendental meaning of butterflies.
We also talk with her about why she felt it was important to create a Doll Legacy Award and we get to hear who the recipients of the 2022 Doll Legacy Award will be given to. I also get to thank her again for being the recipient of the 2015 Detroit Doll Show Legacy Award for Big Beautiful Dolls, as it truly meant a lot to me.
Sandra continues to move through life with courage, creativity, passion and faith and as she does, she helps others along the way to love a little more of themselves, one book, face paint and doll at a time.

A great conversation with Janet Lovett, Sculptor & Reborn Doll Artist. Janet is also a GOLD Award Professional Doll Makers Art Guild winner, PDMAG member and PDMAG mentor. www.inthedollworld.com
This is our 3rd episode of our In The Doll World collaboration with the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild (PDMAG) as the Media Partner for their free upcoming online convention, October 14th-16th, which will celebrate doll artists within PDMAG, free classes, demos and much more.
From her grandmother not owning any dolls to her motherâs vast doll collection, it is such a touching conversation and wonderful doll journey, but Janetâs doll creating journey starts with her seeing this beautiful reborn doll that just lite her up inside, but not being able to afford it, she decided to create one of her own. That first step has taken her on this wonderful doll journey that she shares with us on In The Doll World.
Janet talks about how much she loves watching these little personalities emerge before her eyes through her pieces and Janet shares a touching story of her grandmother, mom, and dad toward the end of the show kind it really kinds of hits home and you get to see where and how she ended up, unbeknownst to her, that she was drawn to creating such beautiful baby dolls.
We also get to hear of some fantastic news about one of Janetâs dolls and it really is phenomenal!
From being mentored through the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild, to creating award winning dolls to now being a mentor herself to other up and coming doll artists, brings it all together for her.
The Professional Doll Makers Art Guild is a place for all artists and as you have seen with our past PDMAG artists, there is room for everyone and everyone is welcome, so if you are interested in seeing more artists or being part of the free classes and demos that will be available, please check out their upcoming online convention at www.pdmagonlineconvention.com
