Nola Simon is a hybrid/remote futurist, approaching the strategy of hybrid or remote work with a futurist perspective. She is the founder of Nola Simon Advisory, a boutique consultancy and the host of a future of work podcast, The Janus Oasis. Nola has worked some version of hybrid or remote for over 10 years, pioneering work from home for her team. Her expertise in fine tuning strategy, crafting compelling narratives and operationalizing hybrid/remote was developed far before the pandemic. She’s seen the downsides of alternate ways of working too – overwork led to a life-threatening car crash due to undiagnosed pneumonia. Her lung collapsed while she was at the wheel, and she hit a fully loaded cement hauler. Shifting to 100% remote work meant that she lost access to the office building she worked in for 16 years so she understands the impact to belonging, employee engagement and retention.
Nola believes the secret to hybrid work is intention. Communication matters - it requires listening, asking great questions, establishing trust and psychological safety. Flexibility and a willingness to experiment and adjust course is the way to build effective culture and process.
Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to implement hybrid work and engage employees.
The future of work will be about integrating work into life. Flexibility is essential to work/life integration - happier and healthier employees are key to successful companies.

What is relational mindfulness and why is it important in Leadership? In today's episode of the In the Lead Show, I have a conversation with Shari Foos, founder of the Narrative Method. We’re all susceptible to a certain amount of influence that can negatively shift our self-perspective and our perspective of dissimilar cultures and people both near and far. Whether those influences come from our own community, popular culture, or artificial intelligence online, there’s little we can do to avoid it. Shari’s passion and mission with The Narrative Method is to help peel away participants’ false assumptions and beliefs to help them refocus their perspectives and understanding. Shari Foos Bio
Shari Foos is a Marriage and Family Therapist, adjunct professor and the creator of The Narrative Method, a California 501c3 non-profit organization. Part of the Human Connection movement, TNM creates programs, products and experiences that address the growing isolation and need for real connection through sharing stories. Foos also co-founded the Bridge in 1999, a free humanities program for low-income adults at Antioch University Los Angeles. She received a MS in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University and a MA in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles.

But life said, “No, go this way….” So, as a University of Kansas sophomore, Carol Scott took an elective course called Child Development and turned an amazing corner in her life. Humanity works! In this episode of the In the Lead Show, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Debbie Cohen and Kate Roeske-Zummer and we explored their five practices of leading with awareness, choice & courage. During our conversation, we got on the subject of trust. I believe that trust absolutely starts with self. As someone who has been around the block, I've seen so many times where we want to point fingers… We want to try and reorganize the business… We want to implement innovation and change at a very rapid pace. When we do this people are just stuck saying/feeling, “I'm not even able to be centered where I'm at, and now you're asking me to do all this?”
This happens because we're just constantly reacting. It's almost like we look at people like they're objects or they're like in a game that we can just kind of like move. In terms of that re-centering piece, that’s where we have the ability to come back to self. Anytime you're feeling mistrust or unsafe, or you're feeling reactive, how do you come back to self? “Self” is what creates that space to create more choices, better decisions, connection, or empathy. I feel like we're almost afraid of “self” and it's so key and it's so valuable. I'm happy to see that these ladies are doing this work because I think it's one of the big key missing pieces in leadership. Leadership isn't always about controlling your outputs and how you impact others.
It starts with you first. If you can't lead within yourself, you're not going to be able to lead others effectively.

What does it mean to be highly sensitive?
Being highly sensitive is not a disorder or a personality trait. It's literally how you are born. About 20-30% of people are classified as highly sensitive, which means their nervous system is more sensitive than most people. Since the world is geared toward the other 80%, often times highly sensitive people can be classified as sensitive or shy or aloof, when in reality they process the world much differently. In this episode of the In the Lead Show, I talk to a fellow HSP, Heather Dominick all about what it means to be Highly Sensitive and the things you can do to care for yourself and use this as a strength, not a weakness. In fact, I would argue that Highly Sensitive People make great leaders and if they can use their strengths as tools and care for themselves, they can be impactful and inspiring.

What does it mean to be fully human? This is a question I encourage every person listening to the show to ponder. Over the years, I've noticed that the human element of business & leadership gets lost. We get really focused on the results, the outcomes, the strategy, the revenue that we often forget about the people behind those results. I find this usually happens because it can be easier to focus on things we feel like we can control. When we do not have the courage to see ourselves & others as fully human, we create toxic workplaces and reinforce the trauma & stories. What if we could see that person who drives you crazy as human? What if you were able to see that difficult person on your team/in your life as fully human?

Does the word obsession have a negative connotation to you? What comes up when you think of it? Do you believe it can be one of your most powerful tools? In this week's episode the In the Lead Show, I talk to Jordan Brown, Mental Health Advocate, about the positives and potential downsides to obsession. Obsession can be a powerful tool used by leaders and it's something that we need to be mindful of. As with most things, I see it as a continuum. Things in and of themselves are not good or bad. They are thoughts, ideas, feelings, personality traits of emotions that can be used in powerful ways, if we are in balance and aware of them. When we aren't aware, it can start to inch closer to be a hindrance rather than a skill.

In this episode of the In the Lead Show I had the pleasure of speaking to Audrey Rajnak. For 22 years, Audrey Rajnak, has worked in Fortune 100 financial services firms at the intersection of finance, technology, real estate and process design. Through leading staff and project teams she discovered her passion for coaching. In 2020, she began her coaching journey, completing coaching training at the University of Texas Dallas and opening her coaching and consulting practice as a side business. In January 2022 her practice, Rajnak & Co, will be launching full time serving individuals and teams. Audrey is an ICF certified coach (ACC) and a Gallup Certified Strengths coach.
