  • All music used with permission by Alba Trio.

Northeast Ohio based Alba Trio was founded as a way of exploring the potential of trumpet driven chordless trios.

Anthony Taddeo is perhaps heard more often as the driving force behind Alla Boara and he serves this group from behind the drum kit. Tommy Lehman works with and leads a number of groups as one of Cleveland and Akron’s busiest trumpet players. And amidst a long career spent -among other things in revitalizing the now flourishing Cape May, New Jersey jazz scene – Tim Lekan returns to anchor this trio on bass.

This performance celebrated the release of their self-titled 2022 album with a performance in the round – reconfiguring the performance space to get a different and interesting sound for this celebration.

Sammy DeLeon is one of the most recognized timbales players in Northeast Ohio and a fixture here. His Sammy DeLeon y Su Orquestra graces stages around the world most recently as the closing act on the outdoor stage at the 2023 Tri-C Jazz Festival.

This performance also features Kip Reed on bass, and Chris Burge on Saxophone but make no mistake, this is a party and we’re all along for the ride. From a March 23rd, 2023 performance it’s Sammy DeLeon and Jackie Warren’s Latin Jazz Quartet – Live at the Bop Stop.

Anyone who explores the rich history of jazz spends a good amount of time considering jazz pianists like Jim Hall, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Geri Allen, to name four.

Joe Leaman is no different, and he leverages the trio format on this weeks program to explore works by these artists and others to provide a historical retrospective of the piano trio format. Featuring Joe on piano, Aiden Plank on acoustic bass and Brent Hamker on guitar, and from March 9th, 2023, it’s Hamker/Leaman/Plank – Live at the Bop Stop.

Grant Heineman first caught our attention at the Bop Stop’s open jazz jam sessions. Back in Northeast Ohio after winning awards at the Berklee College of Music, Grant very quickly worked his way into being an in demand pianist on the scene before decamping for Los Angeles in the fall. One of the earlier episodes of our program featured him in a trio, but the addition of Atlanta born saxophonist Ronell Regis to that trio takes an already talented lineup of up and comers from very good to great.

Featuring Ronell Regis on saxophone, Taylor Arborgast on bass, Colin Dorion on drums, and Grant on piano and vocals, and from a March 17th, 2023 performance it’s the Grant Heineman Quartet – Live at the Bop Stop.
