Man Injured in Stolen Vehicle Crash on Riverside Parkway

Around 9 AM, an Atlanta man, identified as 26-year-old Jamal Muhammad, was seriously injured in a dramatic single-vehicle crash on I-20 near Riverside Parkway. The incident began when a Fulton County police officer spotted Muhammad driving a stolen car on Fulton Industrial Boulevard and attempted to pull him over. Instead of stopping, Muhammad fled, heading westbound on I-20 in the wrong direction.

The pursuit continued into Cobb County, where Muhammad lost control near the Riverside Parkway offramp. The car spun out, veering off the road into the grassy shoulder before striking a tree. Muhammad sustained life-threatening injuries and was quickly transported to Grady Hospital.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Cobb County Police Department at 770-499-3987.

STORY 1: Saint Joseph Catholic Church Breaks Ground on New Rectory

Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Marietta held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new rectory, replacing its historic but damaged former building. The original rectory, dating back to the mid-19th century, was demolished due to mold, asbestos, and water damage from burst pipes in 2022. Construction on the new rectory is set to begin July 1, expected to finish by summer 2025 at an estimated cost of $1.2 million. Funded by a $6 million capital campaign, the project will also add parking spaces and a soccer field. The new rectory will accommodate four priests with modern amenities and enhanced privacy, aiming to support the church's vibrant community.

STORY 2: Red Roof Inns Settles Sex Trafficking Lawsuit Involving Smyrna Location

Red Roof Inns has reached a confidential settlement with eleven plaintiffs who alleged they were sex trafficked at its hotels in Smyrna and Atlanta. The federal lawsuit, which began trial on June 11, accused Red Roof of profiting from sex trafficking by turning a blind eye to activities at their properties. The hotel chain denied wrongdoing but settled after plaintiffs testified and the defense began presenting its case. This marked the first sex trafficking lawsuit against a national hotel brand to go to trial. Plaintiffs' attorneys emphasized the importance of their clients' stories being heard and raising awareness about sex trafficking.

STORY 3: Cobb Elections Explores Charging for Voter Challenges

The Cobb Board of Elections discussed potentially charging individuals who challenge voters' eligibility, following a contentious meeting where thousands of voter registrations were challenged by a resident. Eugene Williams challenged 2,472 registrations, prompting debate among board members. They decided, in a 4-1 vote along party lines, to only consider challenges to active voters going forward, reducing the workload on elections staff. The possibility of charging challengers like Williams for the cost of notifications was debated, with varying opinions among board members and legal perspectives shared. This issue arises amidst broader changes in Georgia election law under Senate Bill 189, which facilitates mass voter challenges and faces legal challenges from organizations like the ACLU.

STORY 4: Cobb Approves Moratorium on Massage Parlor Licenses

The Cobb Board of Commissioners has enacted a six-month moratorium on issuing licenses to massage parlors, or health spas, in response to rising concerns over illegal activities and code violations. This decision follows the denial of a license renewal for Wang’s Feet due to a reported sexual assault and other violations. Cobb officials aim to strengthen regulations and enforcement before resuming licensing, citing ongoing challenges with illicit spa operations. Similar measures have been taken in nearby cities like Roswell to address issues such as human trafficking. Additionally, the commission approved funding for various projects including library furniture, a parks maintenance building, an emergency generator for the medical examiner lab, and road improvements.

    Marietta Advances 90-Home Development

The City Council committee has advanced a site plan for the second phase of a 90-home project called The Village at Sandy Plains, with a unanimous 3-0 vote.

This development, spearheaded by David Pearson Communities, spans 15 acres near Kincaid Elementary. The first phase, already approved in April, includes 41 homes. The second phase will complete the project with 49 more homes.

Council member Cheryl Richardson has emphasized concerns about driveway lengths and parking access. The developer has assured that only 27 homes will have driveways shorter than 20 feet and will specify their locations.

In terms of environmental considerations, the developer plans to retain existing evergreen trees and will plant additional canopy trees. They have also committed to contributing to the city’s tree fund.

The Council’s final vote on July 10 will hopefully bring more clarity and collaboration between the developer and the council.

Cobb to Consider Pause on Licensing Health Spas Cobb Elections Board Finalizes Runoff Results Man Convicted for Cold Case Murder of Father Shot for $50

All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    BREAK: CU of GA

STORY 1: Cobb to Consider Pause on Licensing Health Spas

Cobb County officials are proposing a six-month moratorium on licensing health spas due to concerns over code violations, prostitution, and human trafficking activities reported at local massage parlors. The county's Community Development Department has highlighted evasion of law enforcement by illicit spa establishments as a significant issue. The moratorium aims to halt new licenses while regulations are tightened to address these issues. Recent incidents, such as a sexual assault allegation at a massage parlor, have underscored the need for stricter oversight. Similar measures have been implemented in neighboring cities like Roswell to combat human trafficking. The county hopes to finalize new regulations by November to better manage this industry.

STORY 2: Cobb Elections Board Finalizes Runoff Results

The Cobb Board of Elections unanimously certified results from the June 18 runoff, confirming turnout of 2.49% with 5,750 votes cast out of 231,011 eligible voters across two races. Dr. Jaha Howard won the Democratic runoff for Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2 with 73.07% of the vote, advancing to face Republican Pamela Reardon in November. In the Democratic runoff for Congressional District 14, retired U.S. Army Brigadier Gen. Shawn Harris secured 69% of the vote, setting up a general election contest against incumbent U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

STORY 3: Man Convicted for Cold Case Murder of Father Shot for $50

Dontavian Jones, 22, has been found guilty for the 2016 murder of Dewenzell Spence, 41, in Cobb County. This marks the second conviction in Spence's case, with Terrance Marshall previously sentenced to life without parole. Spence was abducted at gunpoint in Atlanta, forced to withdraw money, then fatally shot in Mableton. His body was discovered in a heavily decomposed state days later. Surveillance footage and facial recognition identified the perpetrators. Senior Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Green described the crime as horrifying and expressed hope for justice in sentencing. Jones faces sentencing on July 15.

Carley Vogel, 23, from Kennesaw, was crowned Miss Tennessee 2024 at the East Tennessee State University Martin Center in Johnson City. She earned a $17,500 scholarship and will represent Tennessee at the Miss America Competition in January 2024 in Orlando, Florida. Vogel, a student at Middle Tennessee State University, impressed judges with her vocal performance of “Climb Every Mountain” from "The Sound of Music." Previously Miss Cobb County, she placed third runner-up in Miss Georgia 2022. Vogel joins Miss Georgia 2024 Lulu Louizaire in vying for the Miss America title. The Miss Cobb County pageant, promoting scholarship and community service, will take place on August 3 at the Jennie T. Anderson Theater, offering over $20,000 in scholarships and prizes.

STORY 5: Could AI dramatically improve how quickly we diagnose cancer?

British scientists have developed a prototype using machine learning to diagnose cancer with over 98% accuracy, identifying 13 types including breast, liver, lung, and prostate cancer. The technology analyzes DNA methylation patterns, which can indicate cancerous changes early on. These patterns, caused by environmental factors altering DNA bases, are crucial for distinguishing cancerous tissue from healthy samples. Published in Biology Methods & Protocols, the study's AI model is trained to interpret these patterns, potentially revolutionizing early cancer detection. Researchers emphasize the need for further diverse biopsy testing to refine the model for clinical use, aiming to enhance patient outcomes by enabling earlier treatment interventions.

STORY 6: Two Injured in Motorcycle Wreck Near KSU

Two people were seriously injured in a motorcycle crash near Kennesaw State University. The motorcycle, driven by an unidentified man and carrying 18-year-old Helen Mastranni of Canton, was traveling east on Chastain Road. A Lexus driven by 22-year-old Sierra Lee from Louisiana, traveling west, turned left onto Barrett Lakes Boulevard with a green arrow, colliding with the motorcycle that had entered the intersection on a red turn signal. The impact separated the riders from the bike. Both were hospitalized with serious injuries at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Lee also sought medical attention for injuries. The crash is under investigation, and Cobb Police are seeking information from witnesses at 770-499-3987.

STORY 7: Police: Smyrna Man Fatally Shot Female Roommate

George Perry, 40, of Smyrna, has been arrested and charged with murder after fatally shooting his roommate, Davon McDaniel, early Friday morning. Perry called 911 himself to report the shooting at their apartment on Cumberland Glen Lane. He indicated he shot McDaniel in the chest but did not provide a reason and did not appear fearful during the call. Police found McDaniel suffering from a gunshot wound and attempted aid but he was pronounced dead at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Perry, who showed no injuries, was arrested and refused to speak without a lawyer present. He faces charges including possession of a firearm during a crime and is held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

Metro volunteers help those stranded in heat find relief at Cobb County cooling centers

Starting Monday, cooling centers will reopen to help residents escape the soaring temperatures. Over the weekend, volunteers like Bryant Plater from MUST Ministries have been out on the streets, offering water and juice and informing people about free bus rides to the cooling center.

Joseph Cook, owner of Cooks Heating and Air, shares how the heat wave has strained older air conditioning systems, leading to increased demand for his services. His team has been working late into the night to keep up with customer calls.

Cobb County has allocated $180,000 to keep the cooling center in Marietta open through September, which has significantly reduced heat-related emergency calls.

The MUST Ministries Cooling Center at 1297 Bells Ferry Road opens on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., providing meals and a cool space for those in need.

Will Richardson’s Votes Hold if Cobb’s Commission Map is Overturned? Marietta School Board Passes Budget with Teacher Raises 'Wild Wild West in Color' Celebrates Juneteenth with Rodeo

    BREAK: CU of GA

STORY 1: If Cobb’s Commission Map is Thrown Out, Do Richardson’s Votes Stand?

Jerica Richardson's pivotal votes on Cobb County's Board of Commissioners have been contentious due to questions surrounding her eligibility. Richardson's district was redrawn by the Democratic majority using Georgia's home rule powers, a move challenged as unconstitutional by Republicans. This legal uncertainty casts doubt on the validity of her votes and decisions, including approving a transit tax referendum and a housing development. While some legal experts suggest her actions might be protected under the de facto doctrine, which upholds acts performed by officials later found to be improperly elected, the issue remains unresolved. Future court decisions could impact the legality of past votes, potentially leading to significant repercussions for Cobb County's governance.

STORY 2: Marietta School Board Passes Budget with Teacher Raises

The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a $159 million budget for the 2024-25 school year, featuring significant teacher raises while maintaining a flat millage rate of 17.97. The budget allocates $9 million towards salary increases and benefits for staff, reflecting an average 5.3% raise for all teaching personnel. Additional funding includes $150,000 for Science of Reading learning programs, $722,000 for academic support staff, and $225,000 for insurance, maintenance, and transportation expenses. Board members expressed satisfaction with prioritizing employee compensation amidst rising living costs, emphasizing their commitment to supporting staff and maintaining fiscal responsibility.

STORY 3: ‘Wild Wild West in Color’ Celebrates Juneteenth with Rodeo

In Marietta, Juneteenth celebrations highlighted both the historical emancipation of African-American slaves and the resilience of Black culture. At Jim Miller Park, the Wild Wild West in Color Rodeo and Agriculture Expo drew thousands, featuring Black cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. Attendees enjoyed Western attire, festive food, and locally grown produce while engaging with vendors and learning about modern farming technologies. The event showcased a rodeo with line dancing, horse riding, and reenactments of famous Black cowboys like Nat Love and Stage Coach Mary, emphasizing their contributions despite historical challenges. Organizers aimed to educate attendees, particularly youth, about agriculture and Black history, ensuring Juneteenth’s legacy endures through cultural celebration and education.

The upgrades included new sections like the Kitchen Place kitchenware department and improvements to the bakery, seafood, meat departments, and Murray’s Cheese Shop. The store also expanded its Starbucks area to accommodate more customers efficiently. Store leader Kexian Jones noted a significant increase in customer traffic and positive feedback since the renovations began last August. Local residents, like Akshay Mohan and Angia Chen, praised the updated store for its improved selection and amenities. Smyrna Councilwoman Susan Wilkinson highlighted Kroger’s investment in the community, emphasizing the store’s role as a meeting place and its partnerships with local schools. The event featured speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and opportunities for attendees to explore the renovated store and enjoy free samples from various brands.

STORY 5: Marietta School Board Curbs Students’ Cell phone Use

The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a new policy to restrict cellphone, smartwatch, and social media use among middle-grade students at Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta Middle School. Starting this fall, students will use special pouches to store their devices throughout the school day, with only staff having access to unlock them. The $100,000 initiative aims to enhance focus and reduce distractions, supported by research partnerships to evaluate its effectiveness. Concerns over implementation logistics were addressed, with assurances that disciplinary responsibilities would not burden teachers. The policy garnered broad support from community leaders and parents, emphasizing its potential to improve student concentration and overall well-being.

Board member Angela Orange expressed her satisfaction, noting the importance of keeping up with the cost of living while maintaining one of metro Atlanta’s lowest millage rates at 17.97. Fellow board member Jaillene Hunter highlighted the prioritization of employees in this year’s budget.

In addition to supporting teachers, the budget allocates funds for Science of Reading programs, general education staff, and increased costs like insurance and maintenance. This move signifies it’s strong commitment to both educators and students in the county.

STORY 1: Woman Dead After Apparent Stabbing in Marietta Apartment

On Sunday morning, Samantha Wollery, a 42-year-old woman, was found dead in her Marietta apartment with apparent stab wounds, according to Marietta Police Department. The incident occurred at Lakeside at Town Center on Williams Drive. Officer Chuck McPhilamy stated that the attacker was someone known to Wollery, withholding the person's identity as authorities search for the suspect. Wollery's coworkers discovered her body when they visited her apartment after she failed to show up for work. The apartment was unlocked, and evidence suggests the suspect fled the scene after the attack. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-8477.

STORY 2: Mail processing in Georgia improving but delays continue

Recently, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy updated U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff on improvements at USPS's Palmetto regional facility, stating 64.5% of first-class mail was delivered on time between May 18 and 24, up from a low of 35.8% in mid-March. Despite progress, delays persist due to past legislation and infrastructure challenges. DeJoy paused a restructuring plan, added staff to Palmetto, and adjusted transport schedules. Ossoff has advocated for resolution, noting ongoing issues for Georgia residents. DeJoy reported 85.4% of packages delivered on time as of May 31, with no delays in the June 9 primaries' mail-in ballots.

STORY 3: 1 Killed, 1 Injured in Crash After Police Chase

Early Monday morning, a car fleeing from Cobb Police crashed in a neighborhood north of Kennesaw State University, resulting in the death of the driver. The incident began when an officer attempted to stop a speeding 2013 BMW X5 on Barrett Parkway. The driver evaded the officer, prompting a pursuit that was quickly terminated due to safety concerns. The car subsequently veered off Frey Road, colliding with trees before coming to a stop in a wooded area. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner, while a passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Cobb County Police Department STEP Unit.

Several female members of the Cobb County Legislative Delegation have criticized Georgia House Minority Leader James Beverly, D-Macon, following allegations of sexual harassment by a Democratic staffer. While an investigation found the claims against Beverly unsubstantiated legally, Rep. Teri Anulewicz, D-Smyrna, emphasized that ethical boundaries had been crossed, despite legality. Rep. Lisa Campbell, D-Kennesaw, also condemned Beverly's alleged actions, citing inappropriate physical contact and discriminatory behavior. Calls for Beverly's resignation or removal from leadership have been met with varying responses, amid concerns over political implications and maintaining ethical standards within the Democratic Party.

STORY 7: Fire Displaces 30 at Marietta Extended Stay Hotel

A fire at the Metro Extended Stay Hotel in Marietta displaced 30 residents on Saturday morning. STORY 2: Marietta School Board Hears Last Pitch to Stop Student Phone Use

The Marietta Board of Education is considering a plan to limit middle school students' access to cellphones and smartwatches using pouches locked by magnets throughout the school day. Superintendent Grant Rivera presented the final proposal, emphasizing a comprehensive approach involving community engagement and IT strategies. Stakeholder feedback has largely been positive, with students even offering insights. The district plans to partner with various institutions for research opportunities to measure the policy's effectiveness. The proposed $100,000 purchase of pouches and magnets will be voted on next Tuesday, with additional costs for securing magnets in classrooms. Community input will be sought before the final decision.

STORY 3: 3 Alcohol Ordinance Changes on Marietta’s Radar

The Marietta City Council is set to discuss three proposed changes to its alcohol ordinances, including allowing specialty wine shops to sell wine by the glass, permitting businesses to offer carry-out, curb service, and delivery of unopened alcoholic drinks, and allowing downtown merchants to sell liquor in the public right-of-way during city-sanctioned events. The changes aim to loosen restrictions on alcohol sales on the Marietta Square. The proposed revisions would expand the scope of the Ancillary Wine Tasting License to allow for consumption on premises, costing $541, and enable businesses to sell alcohol for carry-out and delivery.

STORY 1: Human Skeletal Remains Found in Kennesaw

Human skeletal remains were discovered in Kennesaw on Monday by a Cobb Electric Membership Corporation employee near the EMC power station at 4043 George Busbee Parkway. Reported at 12 p.m., the remains were in an advanced state of decomposition. Kennesaw Police, currently lacking details on the victim's gender, age, or cause of death, noted no open cases matching the discovery. The remains were collected by the Cobb Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The location, on the city limits, leaves many possibilities about the origin of the remains, said police spokesman David Buchanan.

STORY 2: Marietta Man Drowns in Lake Allatoona After Tubing Incident

A Marietta man, Robbie Cornelius, drowned in Lake Allatoona on Sunday after falling off a boat-pulled tube. Responding to a 2:25 p.m. call near Little River Marina, Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) game wardens, along with Cherokee Fire and EMS and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, learned Cornelius wasn't wearing a life jacket and complained of leg pain upon falling. Rescue attempts by others failed as he began pulling them under. Using SONAR, game wardens and firefighters found Cornelius's body around 5 p.m. in 16 feet of water. The Cherokee County coroner now has his body.

STORY 3: Rhonda Jacobson Named Cobb Chamber's Woman of Distinction

The Marietta Board of Education will review a new cell policy for middle-grade students on Tuesday. Superintendent Grant Rivera proposes locking students' cellphones and smartwatches in pouches throughout the school day, which can only be opened by staff. The policy aims to address mental health concerns and social media usage. The initial purchase of pouches will not exceed $100,000. Exceptions will be made for medical conditions, and families can purchase their own pouches if desired. Stakeholder feedback has been incorporated into the policy. A vote on the purchase will occur on June 18 after further public discussion.

STORY 5: GOP congressional candidate walks off debate stage

During a debate for Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District runoff, Republican candidate Chuck Hand walked off the stage, leaving opponent Wayne Johnson to debate alone. Hand objected to debating someone outside the district, as Johnson lives in Macon. Johnson then highlighted Hand's misdemeanor from the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Johnson addressed illegal immigration, asylum policies, and opposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). He also suggested replacing federal student loans with grants and defended in vitro fertilization without federal funding. The district covers Southwest Georgia, from Columbus to the Florida line.

The Cobb Board of Commissioners will consider three items related to the $11.2 million road improvement project on Lower Roswell Road. The project includes resurfacing, adding a raised median and turn lanes, extending sidewalks, and creating a multi-use trail. Aimed at reducing crashes, it has raised concerns among local business owners about potential traffic and economic impacts during the two-year construction period. Commissioner Jerica Richardson delayed the project to address these concerns, developing a fact sheet and appointing a construction ambassador to work with businesses. Key decisions on land acquisition and construction contracts will be discussed at the meeting.

The Georgia Historical Society, in partnership with local organizations, has unveiled a historical marker honoring self-taught African-American artist Nellie Mae Rowe. Located at the Hotel Indigo in Vinings, the marker commemorates Rowe’s life and her “Playhouse,” where she created art after her husband's death. Rowe's home, known for its vibrant decorations and sculptures, was demolished after her death in 1982. Marietta Man Drowns in Lake Allatoona After Tubing Incident

In a heartbreaking incident Sunday afternoon, a boating accident on Lake Allatoona near Marietta resulted in the tragic loss of a life.

Around 2:25 p.m., game wardens responded to a call about a boating accident near Little River Marina. A rental boat was tubing when 40-year-old Robbie Cornelius fell off the tube. Cornelius was not wearing a life jacket and immediately complained of leg pain upon entering the water.

Despite efforts by several individuals to rescue him, they had to abandon their attempts as Cornelius began to pull them under.

Game wardens, along with Cherokee Fire and EMS personnel, initiated a search using SONAR technology. Tragically, Cornelius was found at 16 feet of water just before 5 p.m. His body was subsequently recovered by a dive team and handed over to the Cherokee County coroner.

Cobb: Transit Tax Would Increase Ridership Twelvefold

Cobb County's bold proposal for a 30-year 1% sales tax aims at revolutionizing its transit system. This plan, unveiled recently, is under review by the Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority, with a crucial referendum scheduled for November 5th.

Cobb County anticipates that this sales tax will increase ridership more than twelvefold by 2050. The tax, if approved, would raise the county's sales tax from 6% to 7%, generating an estimated $11 billion. This funding would be used to construct 108 miles of rapid bus routes, several new transit centers, and a countywide "microtransit" service.

The ATL board has unanimously approved Cobb’s project list, signaling a strong step forward. ATL staff highlighted the conservative financial projections, focusing on federal funding without relying on state assistance.

The final decision now lies with the Cobb Board of Commissioners, who will vote next Tuesday.

No serious injuries were reported, and the show, including a preview party for the East Cobb Quilters' Guild, will continue as scheduled starting Thursday morning. Despite the mishap, organizers remain determined to hold the event.

STORY 4: MDJ Time Capsule: The D-Day Invasion

On June 6, 1944, American, British, and Canadian forces stormed Normandy's beaches in a pivotal WWII operation. The Marietta Journal reported the invasion began early morning with heavy bombardment and paratrooper landings. General Eisenhower declared the mission to liberate Europe. In Marietta, the news prompted prayers and a calm, determined response. Locals involved included Maj. Ralph N. Read and Sgt. William Petty, who played key roles. The community's prayer gatherings were noted in national media, reflecting widespread support and anticipation for the operation's success.

STORY 5: Cobb Commission Candidate Appeal Headed Back to Court

Alicia Adams, a Republican disqualified from running for the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, is appealing the decision by the Cobb Board of Elections. The case will be heard on June 20. Adams' disqualification stemmed from a challenge by Democratic activist Mindy Seger, who cited the county's "home rule" map. This map, created by the Democratic majority on the Cobb commission, was intended to keep Commissioner Jerica Richardson in office, but Adams lives outside the boundaries defined by this map. The home rule map's legality is under scrutiny, as the Georgia Supreme Court left its status unresolved. Adams' appeal might determine its constitutionality.

Marietta Considers Consultant for Homeless Issues

The Marietta City Council is considering hiring a consultant to address homelessness, prompted by Councilman Carlyle Kent amid growing constituent complaints and opioid settlement funds. Kent emphasized, “We can’t just keep burying our heads in the sand… We need to find out what we can do.”

In 2022, Georgia secured $636 million from pharmaceutical companies, with Marietta receiving annual funds until 2039. City Manager Bill Bruton confirmed that using these funds for homelessness aligns with their purpose, given the link between homelessness and substance abuse.

Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson highlighted the importance of addressing mental health issues alongside substance abuse in tackling homelessness. Collaboration is on the table, with discussions between Kent and Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell about jointly funding a consultant.
