  • Halifax’s powerhouse pop star, Ria Mae, joins us in the studio just before hitting the road for her Canadian tour with Classified! We dive into the highs and lows of the music industry, discovering how collaboration—sometimes until the early hours of the morning—can open up new perspectives on creating music. Ria shares how one pivotal phone call completely changed the trajectory of her career. One of the hardest-working, hyper-creative, and experienced performers we’ve had the pleasure of sitting down with, this episode is packed with invaluable advice and insights. As Ria looks forward to spending winter in Australia with her wife and kids (lucky!), she’s leaning into her own instincts, desires, and individuality for her upcoming record.

  • Keith and Glen join us for a lively conversation about reconnecting with music—this time through the lens of what some (including us!) might call a supergroup. These talented musicians have found harmony not only in their sound but also by creating space for each other’s creative ideas, families, opinions, and lifestyles.

Their band, Newbridge, delivers a powerful blend of Americana, folk, and roots-rock straight from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The lineup features Canadian music veterans Keith Maddison (Maddison Avenue), Glen Nicholson (In-Flight Safety), Jeff Mosher (The Mellotones, Matt Andersen), Warren Robert (Myles Goodwyn, Pogey), and Robbie Crowell (Sturgill Simpson, Deer Tick, Midland, Matt Mays)—each bringing a wealth of experience and a shared drive to craft a distinctive sound.

The group’s musical journey took them to Nashville, TN, where they recorded their debut album at the legendary Creative Workshop Studio (CWS), with production helmed by the multi-talented Robbie Crowell. Originally built in 1971, CWS has played host to icons like Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, the Doobie Brothers, and Rod Stewart, and served as the setting for the influential music documentary Heartworn Highways.

In this episode, the band reflects on their time in Nashville—complete with stories of Keith’s kids as temporary roommates—and shares how mutual respect has been the secret ingredient to creating stellar new music. Expect plenty of laughs, insights, and captivating stories throughout this conversation!

  • Mike and Kristen's first live podcast recording at Alderney Landing Theatre followed a magnificent performance by award-winning musician Christina Martin, who premiered her ECMA-nominated album Storm with a full band and a stunning string quartet. The atmosphere was electric, with roses falling from the ceiling and a breathtaking moment of gang vocals that featured a cast of local characters including former podcast guests: James Mullinger, Katie Kelly, Nancy Regan, Krista Keough and Steph Purcell. Mike and Kristen not only emceed the show but also seamlessly transitioned into their live podcast, capturing the raw post-performance energy. Christina, still basking in the afterglow of the performance, fielded questions from an engaged audience, offering rare and intimate insights into the immediate experience of a musician post-show. The evening was made even more memorable thanks to the expert sound work by Ground Sound's Trevor DeSouza, who ensured every note resonated perfectly in the theatre.

  • Tyler Mullendore, born from the soul of Lake Ainslie Cape Breton (the witness protection capital of the world according to Mike!), masterfully blends rough-and-tumble roots rock with the electrified emotion of southern-fried Americana. His music channels the heart-wrenching wistfulness of Bob Seger and the lyrical introspection of John Prine, all driven by a classic rock pulse made even more compelling by the remarkable band behind him. A finalist on Canadian Idol, Tyler’s authenticity as a songwriter was affirmed when he won eOne's national "Big Break" competition. On today's episode, we celebrate Tyler's personal growth and reflection as both a musician and a songwriter. We delve into how being thrust into the spotlight at a young age impacted his journey, the valuable lessons he’s learned from these experiences, and how true happiness for him lies in the deep connections he fosters with family and community.

  • Peter White, an engineer turned stand-up comic, quickly rose to prominence in the comedy scene, being named one of the “Top 5 Up and Coming Comedians in Canada” by CBC Radio’s “So, You Think You’re Funny?” within a year of his career. He has performed at top comedy clubs, corporate events, and theatres across Canada, including prestigious festivals like Just for Laughs, Winnipeg Comedy Festival, Montreal Comedy Festival, and the Halifax Comedy Festival for three consecutive years. Peter's comedic talents earned him an hour-long special on CTV and the Comedy Network’s Comedy Now. Beyond stand-up, he has established himself as a writer for the Gemini Award-winning "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" and the Gemini Award-nominated "That’s So Weird" on YTV. Peter's anecdotes about his university days shared with Mike at StFX, highlighting their former shenanigans and being in the loser residence! Peter has written a book on how to be funny (it’s possible for all of us!) and co-hosts his own podcast called, “30 Mins on High”. He eats only 5 types of food and is a self-proclaimed bad dresser.
