Shawn got his Bachelorâs degree in Popular Music/Keyboards at the University of Southern California, and now works as a Producer and a Music Director. Stacey got her Bachelorâs degree in Music Education with piano as her primary instrument from the Eastman School of Music, and then went on to get her Masterâs and her Graduate Performance Diploma from the Longy School of Music in flute performance. She is an active performer on both piano and flute nationally and internationally.
I loved learning about what a degree in popular music can look like from Shawn, and Staceyâs experience serving with the Air National Guard Band of the Northeast on flute and piccolo. It also was just so fascinating to see their different experiences in the worlds of classical and popular music, and how these two worlds intersect.

David Young is the Assistant Principal Bassoonist of the NSO. He did his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University and then went to the University of Maryland to take part in the Woodwind Quintet Fellowship. He actually left his masters studies early to play with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway for a few months, and then spent four years in the United Stated Presidentâs Own Marine Band. Itâs really inspiring to see Davidâs commitment to never giving up on his dream of playing in a major symphony orchestra. And itâs amazing to hear how he reaches that goal to now be, in his words, living the dream.

Don Hoffman was a clarinetist (not retired) in the United States Army Band âPershing's Own", and is a piano accompanist. He did his undergraduate degree at the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, spent a year at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary, and did his masterâs degree at Temple University before going on to win a job in the Army Band.
In this episode Don describes how his position has grown and evolved throughout his almost 30 years in the US Army Band, and he shares some really powerful stories, about how the Army band navigated through the national crises of 9/11 and the pandemic. As an accompanist, he also covers how he balances that alongside his clarinet playing.DONâS EPISODE RESOURCESFav Pieces of Classical Music: â â â Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique (Cleveland recording)or Mahler 2 (Vienna recording)Current Fav Movie Soundtrack: anything by â â â John Williams + GladiatorLatest Reading: Tom Clancy, Brad ThorRecommendations: The Bible, and The Grove Dictionaries of Music and Musicians;US Army Band History (mentioned in the episode)*Donâs school that he mentions in this episode (Philadelphia College of Performing Arts) morphed into University of the Arts, and the college of music/classical music department is no longer there.
