  • Everywhere I turn, all sorts of things shout at me, beckoning me to invite them into my life. I didn’t think I needed a second home in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains until a full-color brochure landed in my mailbox yesterday. The price was right. The views were beautiful. They said the climate was perfect. I have to admit that I was starting to take the bait.

    You get the same invitations, I’m sure. Cars, homes, vacation deals in exotic places. How are we to handle these temptations? We'll explore it together in today's audio devotional.

    Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.   • Have you ever said this? “When I’m wealthy, I’m going to give away a lot of money to God.”

    Generosity doesn’t have to wait until you’re wealthy. In fact, the Bible speaks out against that. The Apostle Paul wrote that a gift “is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have” (2 Corinthians 8:12 ESV). We're going to camp on that concept today in our devotional time today.

    2 Corinthians 8:9-12 (NIV)

    For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

    And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.

  • God's plans are often far different than ours. The disciples planned on Jesus to be king. When he was crucified, those plans were dashed. But God had a better plan.

  • How do you treat the ones closest to you? Are you patient with them or do you constantly fire orders their way? We’re called to treat others with respect. Remember, Jesus died for them. They are God’s masterpiece whom he loves dearly.

    Jesus shows us how to be patient with those we have every reason to put down. We'll explore this touchy topic in our time together today.

    And turning to the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman?   • Think of a time you’ve felt crushed by the words of others. Whether you were personally attacked or overwhelmed by opposing viewpoints, words easily penetrate your soul. They can bring you down.

    How does this relate to patience? We'll dig into that today.

  • Have you been wronged so severely that you just can’t forgive?  Betrayal is one of the deepest and longest lasting pains we can experience.  What makes it even more agonizing is that betrayal comes from someone we trust.  A spouse, boss, friend, sibling, parent or business partner, to name a few.

    As I bring this up, you might be feeling pain in your gut right now.  That person comes to mind.  Yes, it’s terribly painful.  You’ve been carrying this hurt for a long time.  Then the anger, thoughts of revenge, bitterness, resentment or hatred creeps into our soul and lives there. 

    Today, we'll consider what Jesus had to say about this touchy topic.

    “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

    “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

    “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

    His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’

    “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.

    “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

    “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

  • Fear has a way of playing with our emotions.  It can rattle us, paralyze us.

    Fear has a way of amplifying small, negative thoughts that creep into our minds.  We even project things that aren’t likely to happen.  Most of our fears never come true.

    In the Old Testament, God sent 12 spies into the land of Canaan, which he was going to give Israel.  He stated it so clearly to Moses, “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel" (Numbers 13:1 ESV). And that's where we'll start our audio devotional today.

    1 John 4:17-19

    This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

  • We’re all familiar with the parable of the prodigal son.  As a refresher, this was the rebellious kid who decided he had just about enough of his father and marched off with his share of the inheritance.  I’m not sure if his mother was still living, but I can imagine the hurt she felt with her son leaving. 

    After a season of prodigal living (prodigal means “wasteful”), the son was out of money, out of bounds, out of friends and certainly out of his mind. But it's not the prodigal we'll be looking at today. We'll take a look at his brother, who had an envy problem. Join me on today's audio devotional.

    Who is wise and understanding among you?   • What would be the hardest thing for you to surrender to Jesus?

    Is it your media consumption? MLB TV, NFL Sunday Ticket, Hallmark Channel, Netflix, HGTV, news channels, You Tube or any other favorite can steal your heart. Is there any time and energy left for Jesus and the Word?

    How about your device? My iPhone reminds me each week how many hours I’ve staring at it. The number is always higher than I had expected.

    Hobbies can be painful to surrender. Video games, too. We can go overboard with working out. And yes, we can’t forget about food. Let's have an honest discussion (with God) today in our audio devotional.

  • Do you remember a time when you knew you had to ask God for forgiveness, but you were hard-hearted?

    That angry outburst towards your spouse or child. The moral misstep that you deeply regret. The lie that slipped out of your mouth.

    You went about your business for days, waiting for the guilt to disappear. You covered your sinful tracks by sweeping dirt over them. Good works, fake joy, kind acts and whatever came to mind. You tried to remove the guilt, but the weight of your sin crushed your spirit.

  • When I have a hard time surrendering to the Lord, I need to look at Jesus. He gave it all. He surrendered his life to the Father in the most unselfish act of all time. He went to the cross.

    After considering Jesus, my obstacles to surrender are so petty. Let's explore that further today.

  • Are you on the go so much that you don’t have time for prayer? Not quick prayers, but uninterrupted time with God. When you discover the richness of prayer, you’ll know the richness of rest, too.

    When we pray, we release our concerns to God. We praise him for who he is. We confess sin. We thank him. We turn our hearts to him. Instead of our tasks becoming our focus, prayer is at the center. The thought of this is restful.

    Rest is more than a physical thing. It’s spiritual, too. Let's explore this today.

  • “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done” (Genesis 2:2 ESV).

    God must have been exhausted after creating the universe, because he took a whole day off. I know that’s an absurd thought, but we can’t ignore the fact that God did rest. And he did it for a reason.

  • How can joy be restored in our lives when we are going through a time of heart-wrenching loss?

  • They say that laughter has a healing effect on the body. In fact, the Bible tells us, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” (Proverbs 17:22 NIV) Laughter may even release some happy hormones.

  • Isolation is one of the most painful conditions a person can be in. I heard a speaker tell the stories of the persecuted believers in one particular country. He reported that the imprisoned believers were beaten, ridiculed and tortured for their faith. However, it was not this treatment that caused them the most pain.

    It was being kept in solitary confinement, apart from any other believers. That’s what really crushed their spirits. 

    Isn’t it ironic that for many Christians in the free world, they choose isolation? Today, we'll see how much we need each other if we want to thrive in our walk with God.

    Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.   • We call it pride. God calls it sin. We all struggle with it. We see it in others yet we’re blind to it in ourselves. 

    Jesus demonstrated the opposite quality, right up to his final breath on earth. Hanging on a cross, he pronounced about humanity (for whom he was dying), “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34 ESV)

    We often misinterpret Jesus’ intention. These words weren’t only for those who were torturing and ridiculing him. They were for you and me.

  • I’m sure you’ve called out someone’s salvation at one time or another. “Jim can’t possibly be a Christian.” “I know Barb’s not a Christian. Look at the way she lives.”

    I understand. I do a bit of salvation analysis at times. And I shouldn’t. I think we will be surprised, when we get to heaven, who is there — and who is not.

    What if we spent more of our time sharing the Gospel instead of judging whether someone is a believer or not? Jesus was great at this. The New Testament has several examples. The woman at the well (John 4), Zacchaeus (Luke 19) and Matthew, who walked out on his profession to follow Jesus (Matthew 2).

    Let's explore this further together today.

    2 Corinthians 5: 14-20

    For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

    So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:  The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.

  • Two tables down, a man was talking. But no one was with him. I’m not sure who he was talking to, but it may have been God. He had a pocket New Testament on the table as he dozed off in that corner booth. Before I had a chance to engage in conversation with him, the restaurant manager came by and asked him to leave.

    I watched as the man, probably in his late 20s, slowly walked out of the restaurant with his backpack and Bible. He was probably a homeless military vet, as his New Testament had a camouflage cover.

    I have an out-of-the box question. Do you hear the voice of Jesus? If you say “yes,” you might think I’ll ask you to leave the restaurant. However, if you say “no,” then maybe you’ll feel like something is missing in your relationship with God.

    But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
