Steven Rothberg is the Founder of College Recruiter job search site, which believes that every student and recent graduate deserves a great career...and that it should be easy and inexpensive for employers to hire them. Each year, more than 12 million students, recent graduates, and other early career candidates use College Recruiter to help them find part-time, seasonal, internship, and other early career job opportunities almost anywhere globally.
Steven founded the company out of which College Recruiter grew way back in 1991. He had just graduated from law school, passed the bar, and was working as a lawyer when he decided to get out of law to, as he says, enjoy his life. He invested almost all of his savings -- about $200 -- to buy business cards, letterhead, and a fax machine. He then convinced a number of departments at his alma matter, the University of Minnesota, to allow his little business to publish their official campus map for them. He gave the school the maps for free, they distributed them to students, and the company earned its revenues from the sale of advertising around the edges of the maps. That led to also publishing employment magazines called College Recruiter and that led to the first version of the company's website going live in 1996. By 2000, the company had shutdown the profitable maps and magazines to focus on the website.
Listen to this informative Sharkpreneur episode with Steven Rothberg about revolutionizing early career recruitment.
Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week’s show:
- How College Recruiter partners with affiliate sites, including college career services, scholarship sites, and other job boards.
- Why the average rate of applying to a job listing after viewing it is only 5%.
- How College Recruiter automatically distributes job postings to relevant partner sites based on job specifics.
- Why low-skill jobs see higher application rates than specialized roles.
- How AI has disrupted various industries, including job search and recruitment.

Gregory Mohr is a visionary entrepreneur, Wall Street Journal Best Selling author, and the driving force behind Franchise Maven. Gregory's journey from a seasoned micro-electric circuit engineer to the CEO and founder of a thriving franchise empire is nothing short of inspiring. In his two compelling books, Real Freedom: Why Franchises Are Worth Considering and How They Can Be Used For Building Wealth and Expert Resilience: How Entrepreneurs Are Leading the Future in Mind, Mastery, and Meaning. Gregory shares the central theme of his life's work: the transformative power of franchising. Drawing on his vast experience as a restaurant manager, engineer, and franchise owner, Gregory offers a roadmap to financial freedom through the strategic investment in franchises.
Gregory's early days as a restaurant manager marked the genesis of his expertise as a turnaround specialist for distressed businesses. His key insight? Success hinges on how employees are treated. This foundational principle became the cornerstone of his approach to business and franchise ownership – listen to your team, address their concerns, and treat them with respect.
This simple yet powerful philosophy laid the groundwork for Gregory's success in various ventures, from dry cleaners to storage units.
As the CEO and founder of Franchise Maven, Gregory has been a guiding force for hundreds of individuals and business owners, helping them navigate the complex world of franchising. His track record speaks volumes – 260 people empowered to open 500 franchise territories under his guidance.
Gregory's journey took a turn when, inspired by the Rich Dad/Poor Dad series, he pursued an MBA and transitioned from engineering to business ownership. The desire to own his own business led him to explore franchise opportunities, and with his firsthand experience, Gregory is uniquely equipped to guide others.
Having faced the pitfalls of ignoring critical criteria, Gregory candidly shares his own missteps. A business-to-business sales and service franchise, contrary to his preference for a home-based business, taught him valuable lessons. Through this experience, Gregory discovered his passion for investigating business opportunities and assisting prospective franchise owners in avoiding the pitfalls he encountered.
Listen to this informative Sharkpreneur episode with Greg Mohr about finding the perfect business fit.
Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week’s show:

Terry Caney Sr.’s documentary, "Put the Guns Down: A World Epidemic," produced by Ice-T, delves into the relationship between mental health and gun violence, bringing together insights from a broad spectrum of individuals, including celebrities, city officials, and victims of violent crimes, to spark discussions on mental health services and gun control legislation.
Founder of Platinum City Golden West Entertainment, Carney has earned the prestigious award “Fathers in Hip Hop Fatherhood Acknowledgement Award” which celebrates his positive influence as a father figure within the hip-hop community, and the TAF Dignitary Award of Supreme Excellence in 2024, presented to dignitaries, educators, and support staff, highlighting significant contributions to the community.
Born in Denver, Colorado, Carney's early years were riddled with challenges as his parents found strength in adversity by creating a stable home life for him and his siblings. After the family relocated to outside Oklahoma City, where survival was key, the realities of drug-related crime were ever-present. This environment, coupled with the harsh reality of two of his brothers' incarceration for murder, shaped Carney's understanding of the complexities of life on the fringes of society. Embracing his passion for storytelling, Carney authored his first book and his latest film project. Carney's experiences as a father and grandfather significantly shape his narrative style, reflecting themes of redemption, resilience, and the human spirit. His dedication to addressing gun violence was galvanized by the tragic loss of Nipsey Hussle, a friend and collaborator, driving Carney to advocate for change through his art.
His collaboration with Cornell Ward and affiliation with the office of Karen Bass, the esteemed Mayor of Los Angeles known for her dedication to social causes, underscore his dedication to amplifying diverse voices and addressing critical issues. A film screening tour is in the works which includes venues like the White House and the United Nations to facilitate dialogue and advocate for critical social issues on a global scale. Fernan Chacon was born in Venezuela during one of the country's worst financial crises. At the age of 15, his father, who was the sole financial provider for the family, abandoned them, cutting off almost all financial support. This challenging situation pushed Fernan to take matters into his own hands. Without his mother's knowledge, he sold the only valuable item he owned, a gold necklace, and used the proceeds to buy a computer and start an online business. Remarkably, this venture generated over $100,000 in profit within its first year.
At 16, with the help of his stepfather, a U.S. citizen, Fernan moved his family, including his mother and younger brother, to the United States. Shortly after, he purchased a Tesla Model 3 but was scammed out of $15,000 by an older man. Determined to rectify the situation, Fernan took the man to court, representing himself despite having no legal experience, and successfully recovered both his money and the car.
Fernan enrolled in high school in the U.S., where he quickly made friends and launched another business in the logistics industry. This venture also achieved significant success, generating around $100,000 in its first year. However, his high school experience took a turn when he was arrested over a misunderstanding related to a kid's game. This incident led to rumors and the alienation of some of his friends, with even his best friend turning against him. The experience prompted Fernan to drop out of high school during his junior year, just after spending a night in jail, allowing him to focus entirely on his business.
In the year following his decision to leave school, Fernan's business flourished, earning $700,000, driven in part by his determination to prove his doubters wrong. His company continued to grow, and just last year, it surpassed $10 million in revenue, with a 409A audited valuation of $17.6 million by Carta.
