The Utah Hockey Club fell in overtime to the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Wednesday. While the home team failed to secure two points in the standings, fans were treated not only to an appearance by future Hall of Famer Sidney Crosby, but a game winner in the bonus period by Sid The Kid. It may be noteworthy to mention that both Crosby and his longtime NHL counterpart, Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin, both scored goals in their first games played at Delta Center.
That was the on-ice action, the story off the ice was the announcement that the perceived favorite for Utah’s permanent name, Yeti, had been ruled out of the running. Replacing Yeti was Wasatch, a way for the team to still utilize the “mythical snow creature” logo that ownership had been working on for months. Austin Facer was in the Delta Center for the new round of in-arena fan voting, and reports on what he saw in this episode of SLC Puck.

Local hockey fans are likely looking forward to seeing Sidney Crosby, one of the game's all-time greats, in town when the Utah Hockey Club hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday. The issue that gives SLC Puck host Austin Facer pause though, is the fact that Crosby's name has been swirling in trade rumors lately.
The Penguins have been struggling this season and as Crosby continues into the twilight of his career, he may be traded from the only NHL team he's played with to a Stanley Cup contender. The Avalanche are rumored to be connected to a Crosby deal, having just pulled off another big swing earlier this week.
That, and continued strong play by Utah's Clayton Keller and an update on trademark troubles for the Hockey Club's permanent name make up the conversation on this episode of SLC Puck!

Utah captain Clayton Keller took a puck to the face during the second period of Monday night’s game against Winnipeg. Despite the injury, Keller not only returned to the ice but also contributed a goal and an assist in Utah’s 5-2 victory over the Western Conference-leading Jets.
Sporting a nasty cut above his eye, Keller has been playing with a noticeable edge. Ever since being left off Team USA’s roster for the 4 Nations Face Off, the Utah captain has been on a mission, racking up an impressive 28 points in 20 games.
On Thursday, Keller and the Utah Hockey Club will take on the Minnesota Wild—a team managed by Bill Guerin, the same man who assembled the American roster for the mid-season tournament. SLC Puck host Austin Facer predicts Keller will have a standout performance, fueled by his determination to prove Guerin wrong. Keller has already made his statement once, scoring twice against the Wild after the roster announcement in December, and he’ll likely look to deliver another message this time around.

Utah Hockey Club captain Clayton Keller seems to play his best against his hometown team, the St. Louis Blues. Saturday’s 4-2 win was no exception. Keller scored a goal and added three assists to have a hand in all four Utah goals against the Blues. Combined with three points by Logan Cooley, the duo lifted the Club to a victory that could have major playoff implications.
Up next for the Club is a tough task. Utah will wrap up a 7-game homestand by hosting the division-leading Winnipeg Jets, anchored by an MVP candidate in goal, Connor Hellebuyck. A win over the Jets could be a turning point for Utah’s inaugural season, which has had its fair share of ups and downs already. SLC Puck’s Austin Facer suggests that Monday’s matchup might be one of the most important games of the year.

The Utah Hockey Club dropped a 5-3 decision to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night, but the story before the game was the bizarre injury suffered by Montreal forward Emil Heineman. Walking around in the area by the Salt Lake County Building on 500 South and 200 East, Heineman was reportedly struck by a city employee who didn’t see him in the crosswalk. Heineman was left injured and will be out 3-4 weeks.
Despite the setback, Montreal rolled over a slumping Utah team, which may be forced to make some tough decisions soon. Should the team continue to find itself further and further out of the playoff race, general manager Bill Armstrong may be tempted to pull trigger by trading away some players for future assets. One player in particular, who has become a fan favorite, could be the team’s most valuable trade piece, SLC Puck’s Austin Facer suggests. Time will tell what happens next.

The Utah Hockey Club just can’t seem to catch a break. Just as its reported that some of its injured players may be working their way back onto the ice, the Club suffered a big loss, losing leading goal-scorer Dylan Guenther for an indefinite period of time.
However, as goaltender Connor Ingram has shown — multiple times — adversity is nothing this team isn’t already familiar with. Still, SLC Puck host Austin Facer feels that time is of the essence. The playoff chase is beginning to really heat up.
That, and SLC Puck’s official midseason awards, including ‘Best Game,’ ‘Biggest Surprise,’ ‘Funniest Moment,’ ‘Unsung Hero,’ and ‘Most Valuable Player,’ make up this episode of SLC Puck.

The Utah Hockey Club fell to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers 4-1 at the Delta Center on Wednesday night. Despite the loss, SLC Puck host Austin Facer thinks that Utah can learn a loss from the Panthers, mostly the importance of toughness when it comes to winning hockey games.
Logan Cooley, the team's 20-year-old phenom has shown flashes of toughness on a nightly basis, but Austin would like to see him lean more into it. Taking a page out of Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Pronger's playbook, he would do well to adopt an alter ego, or a different persona when he hits the ice.
That, and a discussion on why hockey teams pull their goalies while trailing late in games, make up this episode of SLC Puck!

Coming off of three straight 20-plus goal seasons, Utah Hockey Club forward Lawson Crouse had been off to a cold start in 2024-25. Coming into the Club's recent two-game road trip, Crouse had just four goals on the season. Perhaps responding to the scrutiny, Crouse found his stride in Utah's matchup against Calgary, finding the back of the net twice in a 5-3 comeback victory over the Flames.
Not to be outdone, his linemate Matias Maccelli scored twice against Dallas on Saturday in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Stars. Now nearing the halfway point of the Utah Hockey Club's inaugural season, the playoff race will be heating up. The upcoming seven-game homestand could make or break the Club's postseason hopes.

After more than a month removed from game action, Utah Hockey Club fan favorite Liam O'Brien was activated for the game on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers. With the team currently in a 5-game tailspin, a lineup change might be exactly what's needed to right the ship. SLC Puck! host Austin Facer wonders if benching one forward in favor of "Spicy Tuna" might give the Club a might needed jolt of energy.
Also, uncertainty continues to revolve around the team's permanent name. Is it possible that the Utah Hockey Club moniker might be here to stay?

The Utah Hockey Club has lost 8 of its last 10 at home and getting far more positive results on the road. Why? Is it possible the Delta Center doesn't have the home ice advantage fans thought possible prior to the season? Or is it more likely that the Utah Hockey Club is a bit too jazzed up to play in front of a home crowd? Does it come down to composure and managing emotions?
After listening to head coach Andre Tourigny after Friday's loss to Colorado, SLC Puck Austin Facer thinks its a mindset issue, not an issue of performance. Tourigny's experience and levelheadedness will be heavily relied on to help Utah weather the storm and get back to winning in front of the home crowd. And some new home goods to spruce up the locker room probably wouldn't hurt either.

The sky isn’t quite falling for the Utah Hockey Club, but a shootout loss to Anaheim and a defeat in regulation to Dallas certainly didn’t help the team’s playoff chances. Hopefully, the Club can get back to winning ways with a big game against Colorado on Friday. SLC Puck! host Austin Facer is guessing this game might be the most expensive ticket yet — besides the opener against Chicago on Oct. 8.
Also, it’s been reported that the team is looking to host an outdoor game sometime in the future. Austin speculates on where this game could be held and throws out a wild card idea for a once-in-a-lifetime Utah sports moment.

The Utah Hockey Club's 5-4 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks wasn't a complete disaster, but it may be costly down the stretch. By SLC Puck host Austin Facer's count, the team has now lost several winnable games outright or in overtime, keeping Utah from winning two critical points in the standings each time. Should the Club be in the hunt for a playoff birth, those points could be the difference between making the postseason or not.
Also, Austin answers the SLC Puck hotline, answering one of the team's newest fans' biggest questions: Where has Spicy Tuna been? That, along with commentary on Jack McBain and Dylan Guenther's house tour make up this episode of SLC Puck!

It either was a stroke of genius, or perhaps it was just the work of Hollywood's greatest screenwriters. Either way, Utah Hockey Club owner Ryan Smith decided to give away 2,000 tickets -- presumably to many who had never seen a hockey game before -- and it couldn't have gone better.
Fans "packed the barn" and were treated to a show, a 3-2 overtime win over the Vancouver Canucks, featuring goals by Clayton Keller, Dylan Guenther and Mikhail Sergachev. It was a big night for hockey on a Wednesday in December and SLC Puck! host Austin Facer breaks it down.

So much for all the talk of the Utah Hockey Club finally having a dominating home barn advantage, the team has been much on the road this season. With six straight road victories, this team is making its way back into the playoff hunt, only two points out of the last wildcard spot. On the Mentors Trip, the team earned big wins over the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks.
SLC Puck's Austin Facer wonders if there's something to having moms, dads and sisters with team on the road. If so, Austin thinks they should keep riding the wave, or at least continue letting Lawson's Crouse's sister announce the starting lineups until the streak ends.

Is it any coincidence that Utah Hockey Club forward Clayton Keller turned in a two-goal performance against the Minnesota Wild, a team put together by general manager Bill Guerin, who passed on naming Keller to the United States' team in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-off? Austin Facer doesn't think so. In fact, he thinks Keller made have been extra motivated against the Wild on Tuesday night. Despite Keller's two power-play goal performance, Utah fell to the Wild 5-4 after the first-ever shootout in franchise history.
That, plus an update on the team's permanent branding and a bit of community goodwill by injured stars, Sean Durzi and John Marino, make up this episode of SLC Puck!

The Utah Hockey Club is playing well, with a 3-1-1 record over its last five games heading into Sunday's matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers. Two players in particular, forward Nick Schmaltz and defenseman Michael Kesselring, have been excellent. After a slow start to his goal scoring total, Schmaltz has caught fire with four goals in a three game stretch. Kesselring, to his own credit, has been stalwart on the blueline. He seems to live for the moment. In his 100th career game, he made history with the Utah Hockey Club's first ever Gordie Howe hat trick; a goal, an assist and a fighting penalty.
In other news, star prospect Tij Iginla was ruled out for the rest of his season in the WHL with a hip injury. Austin wonders how long that'll set back the 2024 first round pick's development and sends him a care package to lift his spirits.

The Finnish Connection is real in Utah, thanks to Matias Maccelli, Olli Maatta and Juuso Valimaki of the Utah Hockey Club and Lauri Markkanen of the Utah Jazz. Maatta and Valimaki were named to Finland's squad in the upcoming Four Nations Face Off, drawing a bit of encouragement -- in Finnish -- from Markkanen. SLC Puck's Austin Facer wonders if Maccelli, who was left off the squad, could be added as an alternate as the tournament's Feb. 12 start draws closer.

The Utah Hockey Club registered its first ever shutout with a 6-0 blanking of the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night in Sin City. In a game of firsts, not only did recent call-up Jaxson Stauber hold Vegas scoreless, Utah also saw its first-ever goal by Alex Kerfoot and not one, but two goals by Nick Schmaltz, who had been goalless up to that point.
Austin Facer, who saw the game from a packed-house watch party in downtown Salt Lake City, believes the hockey community in Utah is feeling the NHL effect in a big way. He sees hockey only getting bigger in the state, especially as the team continues to win fans over on and off the ice.
