Most places have a person in charge. In order to not live in complete anarchy, a system needs to be put in place and managed by a person or a team of people. A lot of times, when it comes to society, the person in charge is decided by a vote or poll of some sort. Sometimes though, a person declares themselves king.

Many countries throughout the world have their citizens cast their vote for officials and policies, putting the power in the hands of the people. Trading goods has long been how people get what they need. To produce something and provide it to others who trade it for something they produced. Now, currency has become the middleman of the process, but civilization still trades goods and services. Everybody has something to provide and everybody has something they need. Sometimes though, the product being traded is other human beings.

Season 05 : Islands
Episode 07 : Isolation : North Sentinel Island
To be isolated could be good or bad. You could be isolated for your protection, keeping you away from people who want to do you harm. You could also be isolated as punishment, like putting a child in a time out for acting up. You also don’t have to be alone to be isolated. There are groups of people who are isolated, like research teams on Antarctica or astronauts on the International Space Station. Isolation comes in all forms and oftentimes, extroverted people want to end that isolation and bring everybody into the spotlight. Sometimes though, those isolated people will do anything to just be left alone.

Episode 03 : Operation Watchtower : Guadalcanal
World War I or The Great War, was called the war to end all wars because it was thought that no country would ever want to create a conflict of that magnitude ever again. Then World War II happened and it was clear that humanity was capable of extreme destructive forces, ending with atomic bombs. The war was fought with major campaigns across multiple continents and in the ocean in order to try and stop the expansion of the axis forces. Sometimes though, the smallest advance can make the biggest difference.

Episode 02 : The Egg War : The Farallon Islands
Eggs are a pretty standard part of most people’s diet. They’re rich in protein and a fairly renewable food source. On top of that, in my own opinion, they’re delicious. In the 19th century, large groups of workers would rely on eggs to provide them with the protein they needed to complete their laborious jobs at an affordable price. When the demand for eggs got too high, some people thought they had found an unlimited supply. Sometimes though, the cost is more than just the almighty dollar.

Season 05 : Islands
Episode 01 : The Wager Mutiny : Wager Island
Sailing across the ocean is dangerous today. Nearly 300 years ago, people were doing it with much less reliable information than we have now. They had maps that were flat out wrong and equipment that didn’t really work if the weather was bad. They had to rely on the hope that nature would cooperate with their desire to make it to the other side of the world. Many men had the experience and drive to make the journey successfully. Sometimes though, that prize would remain out of reach.

Season 04 : British Isles
Minisode : Lewisham Rail Crash : London, England
Public transportation is an important part of our urban structure. Moving a large number of people at one time is always going to be much more efficient than every person taking an individual path. On top of that, riding the rails can help you cover more ground faster as you don’t normally have to deal with traffic. Sure trains can get delayed, but for the most part, you can get from point A to point B in a more direct route. The great thing about a train over a car is that you don’t have to drive, so you can focus your attention elsewhere. Sometimes though, the train driver’s attention is also focused somewhere else.

Season 04 : British Isles
Episode 14 : Lockerbie : Lockerbie, Scotland
People generally spend the majority of their time, just minding their own business. Getting up in the morning and spending their day carrying out a regular routine. That usually involves going to work or school or just performing mundane tasks around the house. Outside of their usual activities, when life takes them on other journeys, people generally keep their heads down and just move along with life. Sometimes though, death makes you its business.

Minisode : Omagh Bombing : Omagh, Northern Ireland
Traveling is something that’s loved by many people. To go out, experience the world, see new sights, and experience different cultures is an exciting time. Even if it’s just a short trip to a new town, many people have a wanderlust that keeps them moving. People also like to document those travels by taking pictures and videos. A quick pause to snap a picture can be a great way to save the memory for the future. Sometimes though, it’s a record of the calm before the storm.

Season 04 : British Isles
Episode 13 : Free Ireland! : Ireland
Colonization has had a major effect on the world, both positive and negative. Of course the people being colonized are often going to have a more negative view of the people coming in and declaring the land theirs. Societies want to have a say in what’s happening in the place they call home, but usually, even if they don’t like it, the locals don’t have the power to do much about it. Sometimes though, they muster the strength to fight for what’s theirs.

Minisode : The Glencoe Massacre : Glencow, Scotland
Individuality is an important aspect of life. We live in a society and working together for a common goal is definitely necessary, but on a personal level, having your own identity and opinions is what makes you, well, you. In many places today, you’re free to not agree with whoever’s in charge. You can disagree with their policies and still walk free amongst society. Sometimes though, you either praise the person at the top or you pay the ultimate price.

Season 04 : British Isles
Episode 12 : The Green Children of Woolpit : England
Children are considered some of the most vulnerable people in society. That’s why they’re usually under the care of an adult guardian of some sort. There are times when children are found out on their own, lost or having suffered some great tragedy. When that happens, we as a society make every attempt to care for those children by either finding their parents or placing them with other adults who are willing to take care of them. Usually, lost children are from the local area and their origin can be traced fairly easily. Sometimes though, the children found are out of this world.

Minisode : Night of the Big Wind : Ireland
Changing weather can often be a blessing in many areas. Rainfall after a long period of drought can be a lifeline in dryer places. At the same time, wetter areas can get some relief when the sun comes out and provides some much needed warmth. Many people look to the forecast in anticipation of a change in the weather, preparing themselves for what’s ahead. Sometimes though, mother nature changes her mind.

Season 04 : British Isles
Episode 11 : The Great Train Robbery : London, England
Not everyone who works on a train is a driver, conductor or engineer. Sometimes, there are employees on the train doing other work. On more upscale trains there can be cooks and bartenders. During times of war, trains have had medical carriages where doctors and nurse’s care for the wounded in transit. Saving time while performing the job on the train is a major benefit to having specialized rail cars. Sometimes though, that rail car becomes a target.
