Compensation discussions are always the same: Workers want more. Companies want to pay less. And somewhere in the middle the two shall meet.
But this year is a little extra. After a decade-long hiring boom, we had a pandemic, followed by runaway salary inflation, then a tanking job market (for Office Dorksâ˘ď¸ anyway), and another bounce back (fingers crossed.)
Which really means we have some workers unwilling to move from those high paying jobs they landed in 2021/2022. While others are taking whatever they can get. Then youâve got some companies thinking they can still cut costs. While others are paying up because they have to.
Throw in increased pressure for AI and low cost offshoring and itâs the wild west.
Jeff Smith and James Hornick dig into the disparity and lack of clarity around fair market value in The 10 Minute Talent Rant, Episode 103, "Compensation is a Trainwreckâ

Every delayed search, declined offer, quick exit, and unexpected resignation comes from a lack of understanding that there's a lot more to hiring than recruiting. Jeff Smith and James Hornick will do a deep dive on what your company needs to focus on in a strengthening job market in the The 10 Minute Talent Rant, Episode 102, "Finding Candidates is the Easy Partâ -

Be careful what you wish for.
Weâve long said recruitment technology is comically behind the times. (Feel free to go way back and watch episode 6, "Why Does HR Technology Suck?") Historically, itâs the last place for new innovation when thereâs more money to be made creating sales or marketing tech.
But if you work in recruiting and you looked at your inbox over the last year, you probably noticed the steady increase in spam pitches. New RecruitTech is popping up left and right. Maybe AI made it cheaper to create. Maybe buyers in recruiting are finally the low hanging fruit.
But the real question: is any of it any good? Jeff Smith and James Hornick. will tackle that in the The 10 Minute Talent Rant, episode 101, "The RecruitTech Hellscape Is Hereâ

More is not always better. And the killer combo of Easy Apply buttons and 1 click AI resume customization pushed inbound applications to the max.
Hereâs the harsh reality: weâre quickly approaching the point where inbound applies are so far off the mark â and in such high quality â that itâs easier to fill openings by not posting any jobs at all. Outbound âheadhuntingâ is becoming less time consuming than people throwing their hat in the ring.
It might seem crazy. But James Hornick and Jeff Smith will discuss whether or not weâre at the point of no return with job ads in episode 98 of The 10 Minute Talent Rant, "Inbound Recruiting Is Brokenâ

Every year I keep hoping some new recruitment tech will come along and save us. And every year Iâm disappointed.

Why is that? James Hornick and Jeff Smith do a deep dive on what it will take for a fundamental shift in recruitment tech in episode 96 of The 10 Minute Talent Rant, "Why LinkedIn & Indeed Are So Hard To Disruptâ

A client of ours recently had a leadership level finance & accounting search that got over 600 inbound applicants. Thatâs not the shocking part. Anyone who works in recruiting has this happen on a fairly regular basis.
The shocking part: 2/3 of them were actually good. Skill sets were all in the ballpark. This wasn't a âEasy Apply button gone wrongâ situation.
And weâre talking to more and more companies in this situation. Which raises the question: whoâs going to screen all these candidates when internal recruiting teams have been cut to the bone in the last 2 years?
James Hornick and Jeff Smith sound off on how no one is prepared for the hiring market to come roaring back in episode 95 of The 10 Minute Talent Rant, "Whoâs Gonna Screen All These Candidates?â
