This week I am joined by Jock Paget
Jonathan "Jock" Paget is a New Zealand equestrian rider who won a bronze medal in Team eventing at the 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2013 he became only the second rider to win the Badminton Horse Trials on debut after fellow New Zealander Mark Todd.
He is now general manager of High Performance at Equestrian Sports NZ, which is how I got to meet him on a hectic car ride up to Auckland on a way to a HPSNZ residential
On this ride I got to hear from someone who I believe to be incredibly skilled in coaching, his understanding of human (and horse) behaviour is outstanding and I’m sure this is why he is held in such high regard.
I could talk to Jock for hours, and quite frankly did, I reckon he was stoked when the residential was over and he got away from me!

This week I am joined By Cr Craig Harrison for Part 2 of our chat
Craig is a postdoctoral research fellow at Auckland University of Technology, founder of The Athlete Development Project and host of a great podcast, The Athlete Development Show
Craig is passionate about the youth sport space, both in the way we educate coaches and the experience that the youth have when playing sport
I thoroughly enjoyed this chat with Craig and would encourage you to go over to his Podcast “The Athlete Development Show” and check out his great work.
On a slightly different note, I mentioned a couple of podcasts ago that I am a fan of the “Coach Your Brains Out Podcast” and I have tried something new here with this epsidoe based on that show. The relaes their shows in roughly half hour segments which I like as it keeps me both entertained and wanting more so I have split this chat up in to two parts.

This week I am joined by Allan Bunting
Allan has a certain presence about him, he is a strong leader who has worked really hard on his coaching skills and he speaks to this during the conversation and shows why he is the outstanding coach that he is.
In 2021 Allan and childhood friend Cory Sweeney lead the NZ Womens 7s team to Olympic Gold in Tokyo and in February this year was appointed to replace Wayne Smith as Director of Rugby of the Black Ferns Program
This was a cool chat for me as Allan is someone who I looked up to as a kid and now as a coach and I was buzzing after recording this.

Coach Your Brains Out with Jonathan FaderI Am .... Jonny Wilkinson with Michael GervaisThe Headliners with Rick Rubin
The podcasts I have reviewed areI hope you enjoy this little episode and I would be keen to hear any podcast recommendations that you might have

This week on the podcast I am joined by Marianne Davies, Marianne is a PhD Candidate Developing a Nonlinear Pedagogy in Equestrian Coaching at Sheffield Hallam University
Marianne has a podcast called river tiger the equestrian podcast and a website which is dynamics-coaching.com
I reached out to Marianne after listening to a couple of her podcasts which were titled “Learning in the Ugly zone” which I loved and then listened to “Snow, Rabbits and Pooh Sticks” which links in nicely to the prior podcast.
These actually started as blog articles on her aforementioned website and it will surprise many of you of know me that I actually read them. They are beautifully written, really engaging and they make you feel like you are there with her.
As always I hope you enjoy the conversation, I loved it, I got to scratch my itch with regard to ecological dynamics which I keep coming back to and enjoy trying to make sense of it with some really cool people and Marianne is definitely one of them
We start this chat talking about her writing as I mentioned how I thought she did an amazing job with it.
If you know anyone who you think would get value from this podcast then please share it with them and don’t forget to hit the subscribe button

This week I am joined by Harry Curtin who I met at Mt Maunganui earlier in the year when he attended an Inside Running Rugby Camp (which was awesome!) hosted by former guests Mike Rogers and Rusty Earnshaw.
Harry has just completed a Masters Degree in Sports Performance Coaching at the University of Sterling and we chat all things coaching and how he has brought his learning to life. -
I am stoked to kick off Season 5 of Talking Performance with NZ legend Wayne Smith.
If Smithy didn't have legend status prior to last year he certainly did have by the end of the year after he helped the NZ Black Ferns win the Rugby World Cup in what would have to be one of the greatest turnarounds in NZ Sporting history.
Smithy was awarded the NZ Coach of the year award at the Hallbergs this year and I couldn't think of a more fitting recipient.
If you enjoy the pod and think someone else might please share the episode with them. -
This is the final episode of the 2022 in review and one in where I bring some of the coaches that I interviewed last year together
Shane McLeod - Hockey
Noeline Taurua - Netball
Brent Matehaere - Basketball
Crystal Kaua - Rugby
If you enjoy the podcast it would be great if you could share it with your mates and if you have any feedback for me in ways in which I can make it better, or guests you would like to hear from please reach out. -
This review is a focus on Skill Acquisition with 3 great guests, Carl Woods, Alan Dunton and Philip O'Callaghan.
Each episode was great in their own right and I would encourage you to check them out if you haven't already listened to them... or even if you have.
Carl is episode 102, Alan 112 and Philip 106.
I hope you enjoy this review and it would be great if you could share the podcast and leave a review where ever it is that you listen. -
This week we have a bit of an athlete theme with aspiring professional golfer Amelia Garvey, NZ Sporting Legend Rob Waddell, Olympian Anna Simcic and PGA Tour Champions star Steven Alker.
We cover off a number of things from work ethic, to planning and even touch on talent hot beds.
I hope you enjoy the podcast. -
Review #4 is where I bring together the podcasts I did with Dr Jay-Lee Nair, David Galbraith, Hugh Gilmore and Jonah Oliver and the theme of this one is psychology.
These were 4 great guests and there was so many good takeaways from them, I do enjoy going back to the full episodes and listening to them and I pick up stuff I never heard the first time, or at least landed differently. -
In this weeks 2022 year in review I review my sessions with Dr Oliver Runswick (Ep 88), Stuart Morgan (Ep 97) and Cal Jones. (Ep 113)
The focus this week is mainly on skill acquisition and how that is evolving, but equally how we need to be careful as it evolves. That is what you have to love about coaching, the more you think you are getting a handle on it, the more you realise you have to learn, which is why I love it.
These guys were great and I hope this inspires you to go back and listen to their original episodes. If you enjoy the podcast and want to leave a review that would be appreciated. -
As it is that time of the year, I have been reviewing the show and thought I would do some mash up episodes which may inspire you to go back and re listen.
There have been a few themes throughout 2022 and I have tried to group the episodes with others of a similar theme
I have really enjoyed the process. I get so much value out of doing these podcasts and I hope you are able to get some takeaways too.
I have some great guests lined up for 2023 and look forward to getting started with them but in the mean time I hope you will enjoy these 2022 year in review podcasts
To kick us Off I have Trevor Ragan (The Learning Lab) Ep 87 Bill Bestic (SAS, Anaethatist, Helicopter pilot) Ep 90-91 and Mark Mathews (Big Wave Surfer) Ep 92

This week I am delighted to have joining me from Wales, Judo Coach Cal Jones
Cal like most of my guests is someone I stalk on twitter where he posts some great work and can be found at @CalJonesJudo
I am amazed at how open the community of coaches are and how willing they are to share their time with me and to those who have been on in the past I do really appreciate it.At the start of the session Cal refers to "EcoD" which is ecological dynamics and "IP" is information processing just incase these are new terms for you.
Thank you to everyone who supports the podcast I really appreciate this and do feel truly grateful to be able to do this.
Enjoy the chat

This week I am joined by Alan Dunton
Alan has a PhD in Skill Acquisition and is a lecturer at MTU Cork in Coaching Science. He was an athlete himself reaching a very high level in Tae Kwon Do.
I have followed Alan on Twitter for quite some time and enjoyed how he sees the world and there were a couple of moments in this chat where I had light bulbs go off because of the way he explained some complex topics in lovely simple and succinct ways.
As always I hope you enjoy the chat and if you have anyone you know of who think would get some value out of this podcast, please share it with them.

This week I have decided to do a mash up, inspired by my good friend Bryce Hamer. These three episodes came from earlier in the year and speak to themes confidence, nervousness and embracing what comes with that.
My 3 guests are Jonah Oliver, Trevor Ragan and Mark Mathews.
Jonah Oliver is a Psychologist based in Australia and works with some of the best athletes in the world.
Trevor Ragan has done some amazing work in understanding learning and has a great audiobook available on his podcast.
Mark Mathews is a big wave surfer based in Australia and know all about fear and what comes with it. -
This is a Re Published Episode from May 6th 2020 when we had Wayne on as our first ever guest.
I thought it was appropriate to re post this based on what Wayne has achieved with our Black Ferns in what has to be one of the greatest turn arounds in NZ sporting history. Now it would be unfair to give all the credit to Smithy as he would be the first to admit he has had an outstanding team of coaches with him and it was the girls who had to do the work, but it is hard to look past the influence he has had.
He has committed to coaching this team his way, like Crystal said last week, no one will out work Smithy and he would have given this everything and it was so cool to see.
I have been blessed to have him as my mentor for the last 10 years after I wrote an email asking him, I have learnt more from him than anyone and he truly is a master coach and the fact that he responded by agreeing to be my mentor, a golf coach he had never heard says so much about the man
I love him and I love this episode and I trust you will too, even if you have heard it before it is worth another listen.

This week I am thrilled to have Crystal Kaua on the show. It was great to have Crystal back on Talking Performance after almost 2 and a half years. She last appeared in episode 5 in May 2020.
Crystal blew my mind during our first chat in 2020 and I know she had a massive impact on many listeners and I can say this one will have the same affect
I love how open she speaks about living to her values and the tough decisions that come with that. This is a strong episode and I truly believe Crystal will continue to have a massive influence on sport and coaching in this country.
For those who are listening outside of NZ The word Mahi pops up a few times which in Te Reo Maori means “work”
