Today’s world is unpredictable and full of contradictions, and navigating its complexities while trying to make the best decisions is far from easy. In his new book The Joy of Science, the acclaimed physicist and bluedot favourite, Professor Jim Al-Khalili presents 8 short lessons on how to unlock the clarity, empowerment, and joy of thinking and living a little more scientifically.
In this brief guide to leading a more rational life, Professor Al-Khalili invites readers to engage with the world as scientists have been trained to do. The scientific method has served human-kind well in its quest to see things as they really are, and underpinning the scientific method are core principles that can help us all navigate modern life more confidently. Discussing the nature of truth and uncertainty, the role of doubt, the pros and cons of simplification, the value of guarding against bias, the importance of evidence-based thinking, and more, The Joy Of Science shows how the powerful ideas at the heart of the scientific method are deeply relevant to the complicated times we live in and the difficult choices we make.
Professor Jim Al-Khalili joins us now for a special In Conversation.

How easy is it to become vegan? And what is veganism really like? For many, fear of the unknown or misapprehensions about what a vegan lifestyle is like, are a barrier to trying it out. Gone are the days of limited vegan options, and a plain or unexciting diet – it’s now possible to explore a vegan diet that’s even more adventurous and exciting than a meat-based one, as well as being better for the planet. And outside of food easier to dip your toes into a vegan lifestyle than you’d think, with beauty, fashion and healthcare industries all creating new vegan-friendly alternative ranges.
In the first two episodes of this series we explored the animal welfare roots of veganism, and its place in fighting climate change… In this final episode of Plate Up, in association with The Vegan Society, we’ll be exploring the exciting future of vegan food, some practical tips to starting a plant-based life, and how businesses and local communities can be at the forefront of the fight against climate change, working together to connect closer to nature and the environment.

In this episode, we’ll be diving into veganism for climate change – the main challenges facing the environment, the role of diet and farming practices, and the alternatives that could save the planet… We’ll be speaking with climate change expert Andrew Simms, one of the founders of the Green New Deal in the UK, and the creator of the now world-renowned Earth Overshoot Day, and finding out why veganism could play a role in fixing almost every food-related cause of the climate crisis – from biodiversity loss and deforestation to food security and water scarcity.

To coincide with Cop26, taking place in Glasgow, this miniseries will be delving into the role that veganism can play in the future of our planet.
Over the next three episodes we’ll be speaking with climate change scientists, sustainability experts and notable vegans to discuss how adopting lifestyle changes can make a difference to the future of our blue dot…
From the roots of the vegan worldview, to our current climate crisis, and some of the solutions veganism and sustainable lifestyles could provide.
In this first episode we’ll be introducing what veganism mean in 2021 – what it represents, how it might be different to what you think, and how wide-ranging the vegan lifestyle is. We’ll be uncovering the background to modern veganism, and the ethical perspectives that have become the foundation for the vegan way of life.
Enjoy the episode and don’t forget to subscribe and leave a review.
