Ossoff Introduces Postmaster General Reform Act Georgia Lawmakers Get An Earful on Private Water Systems' High Rates US Fed makes aggressive rate cut, weeks before election

We’ll have these stories and more, coming up on your Georgia News Podcast and If you want community, local, and statewide news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    Commercial: DRAKE

Story 1: Ossoff Introduces Postmaster General Reform Act

Sen. Jon Ossoff has introduced the Postmaster General Reform Act, which seeks to impose term limits and require Senate confirmation for the U.S. postmaster general. This move follows Ossoff's criticism of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy due to significant mail delivery delays in Georgia, particularly at a new distribution center in Fulton County, where only 36% of inbound mail was timely. The legislation proposes limiting the postmaster general to two consecutive five-year terms and reinstating Senate confirmation, arguing the role's significant impact warrants elected officials' oversight. This reform emerges amid persistent mail delivery issues in Georgia, despite DeJoy's restructuring efforts and subsequent corrective actions.

Story 2: Georgia Lawmakers Get An Earful on Private Water Systems' High Rates

Lake Oconee-area property owners have voiced concerns over high water rates charged by private systems like Piedmont Water Co., which ranks as Georgia's second-highest. Mike Hartman highlighted the exorbitant connection fees, advocating for regulation akin to municipal systems. Legislative efforts, led by Rep. Trey Rhodes, seek to impose oversight by the Georgia Public Service Commission, but have faced obstacles. Piedmont Water's COO, Brent Hurst, defended the rates, citing significant investments to meet seasonal irrigation demands. However, many attendees, including Rep. Debbie Buckner and business owner Jacob Fried, emphasized the need for regulatory oversight to ensure fair pricing, despite concerns about potential cost increases associated with PSC regulation.

Story 3: US Fed makes aggressive rate cut, weeks before election

The US Federal Reserve has cut its key lending rate by half a percentage point, marking its first reduction since the Covid pandemic. This decision, made just ahead of the November presidential election, aims to lower borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, impacting rates on mortgages and credit cards. The cut reflects the Fed’s confidence in achieving its inflation target while managing employment levels sustainably. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris may view the rate cut favorably as it bolsters President Joe Biden's economic record in her campaign against Republican Donald Trump. The Fed's move comes amid easing inflation and a cooling labor market, although the decision carries risks of reigniting inflation. Policymakers have also indicated further rate cuts this year and in 2025, highlighting a shift to a less restrictive monetary policy, with potential political ramifications given the focus on inflation and cost of living in the upcoming election.

Story 4: ‘What Happens Three Months From Now?’ Mental Health After Georgia High School Shooting

The tragic shooting at Apalachee High School has left the Winder community grappling with severe mental health challenges, with many residents experiencing panic attacks and anxiety. In response, local and regional mental health providers have mobilized to offer counseling and support, including a temporary recovery center and therapy sessions for post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite these efforts, there are significant concerns about the long-term availability of mental health resources, as Barrow County faces a shortage of providers and limited access to affordable care. This situation highlights broader systemic issues in Georgia, where many areas lack sufficient mental health services, exacerbated by the state's low ranking in mental health care access and the fact that it has not expanded Medicaid eligibility. The community's need for mental health support is expected to intensify as the immediate response subsides and students return to school, underscoring the urgent need for sustained mental health resources.

Story 5: Fly Betty to Play at West Milford Farm

Fly Betty, a popular six-member band known for playing dance and party music from the 70s to current hits, is set to perform at West Milford Farm on September 27. The concert, part of the farm's 2024 open-air concert series, will begin at 7:29 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. Lawn tickets are available for $30, while front porch tables for four are priced at $200, and party barn tables for eight start at $250. Tickets can be purchased on the West Milford Farm website under the "Concerts" tab. Catering by Oakley’s Provisions will offer entrees ranging from $6 to $15, though attendees can bring their own food and drinks. Alcoholic beverages will not be sold on-site. All guests must be 21 or older. West Milford Farm is located at 7938 Ball Ground Road near Cumming, in east Cherokee County.

Story 6: Walz rallies young Ga voters after Vance appeals to evangelicals

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz visited Georgia to rally young voters for Kamala Harris ahead of the November 5 election. Speaking at venues like Georgia Tech and the Atlanta University Center Consortium, he emphasized issues appealing to young voters, including abortion access, LGBTQ rights, and student loan debt relief, framing these as matters of personal freedom. Walz highlighted Harris' platform on simplifying taxes for small businesses and addressed concerns over recent gun violence, stating it's a responsibility to protect citizens. His visit underscores Georgia's pivotal role in the election, as indicated by the close polls and recent visits from other VP candidates.

Story 7: Cherokee County Health Department Offering Breast Cancer Screening

The North Georgia Health District is organizing free breast cancer awareness and screening events in October to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. These events, held in Cherokee County, offer free breast exams, mammogram referrals for women aged 40 to 64, and Pap smears for those in need. The screenings are scheduled at the Woodstock Health Center on October 22-23 and at the Canton Health Center on October 22. Appointments are required, but walk-ins are welcome at the Canton location. The initiative emphasizes the importance of early detection, with educational resources and enrollment in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) available, covering mammogram costs.

STORY 1: Fifth Newton Student Faces Charge after School Threat

In Newton County School System, a fifth student has been arrested for making threats against a school, students, or staff. A 13-year-old from Liberty Middle School was taken into custody after allegedly making threats on a school bus. This follows the arrest of a 12-year-old student for making electronic threats toward a school in Florida. Since early September, five students have been charged with terroristic threats, prompted by a school shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. Sheriff Ezell Brown emphasized the seriousness of such threats, urging students and parents to understand the legal consequences. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III stated that the school system collaborates with law enforcement to address threats and administer consequences, stressing that threatening behavior is prohibited and considered criminal.

STORY 2: Buckhead To Begin Work On Historic Town Hall

The renovation of Buckhead's Old Town Hall is set to start on Monday, September 23, with concerns about overgrown grass potentially hindering work. Nancy Brock from the Morgan County Landmarks Society emphasized the need for the grass to be trimmed to allow University of Georgia students access to the building's windows for the project. The building, a historic site built in 1910, is the town's only historic property and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The renovation is supported by a $2,335 grant from the Morgan County Landmark Society, matched by the town. UGA students, under Professor Jim Smith, will lead the restoration of two windows as the project's first phase. Additionally, the town council accepted a $1,000 donation from Callidora Ranch for investment, planned for sidewalk repairs, scheduled a Christmas party for December 5, and set dates for cemetery cleanup.

STORY 3: Peachtree Academy FFA Student Meadow Joseph Brings Home Awards

Meadow Joseph, Peachtree Academy's first beef cattle exhibitor, made history with her impressive performance at the Gwinnett County Fair. She earned several top honors, including Grand Champion Angus Bull, Reserve Grand Champion Angus Bull, Grand Champion Angus Cow/Calf Pair, and Second Place Angus Heifer in its class. Additionally, Joseph excelled in the show ring, winning first place in Showmanship. Her dedication to her Angus herd and commitment to excellence have set a new benchmark for Peachtree Academy's FFA program, emphasizing the importance of agricultural education and hands-on learning for future success.

STORY 4: Morgan officials urge citizens to avoid paying tax bills via mail

Morgan County is experiencing postal service delays affecting property tax payments. Tax Commissioner Wendy Coe advises avoiding mail payments for upcoming property taxes due to these issues. Alternatives include using a secure drop-box on Hancock Street in Madison, paying in-person at the tax office, utilizing pay-by-phone, or making online payments. Despite mail disruptions, tax payments remain due by November 15, 2024, with penalties for late payments. Citizens can view bills online, and credit/debit card payments are accepted with fees. The tax office emphasizes the need to meet payment deadlines to avoid penalties.

STORY 5: Student Charged with Bringing Gun to School

A 13-year-old student at Cousins Middle School was arrested on September 17 for allegedly bringing a gun to school the previous day. The Newton County Sheriff's Office was alerted after the student showed the gun to others on the school bus. He has been charged with carrying a weapon in a school safety zone, a felony, and was handed over to the Juvenile Court System. The Sheriff's Office emphasized the importance of student and staff safety, urging parents to discuss the serious consequences of bringing weapons to school, making threats, or committing acts of violence, to prevent such incidents and avoid further arrests.

Story 1: Civil Rights Groups Challenge Georgia Election Rule Changes

Civil and voting rights groups, including the ACLU of Georgia and the Southern Poverty Law Center, have filed a brief challenging recent change made by the State Election Board's Republican majority. These changes allow local officials to conduct inquiries and review documentation before certifying election results, which the groups argue could disrupt Georgia's election certification process and disenfranchise voters. The lawsuit, supported by the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Party of Georgia, claims the new rules could create uncertainty and delay results, potentially impacting the upcoming elections. Georgia Republican Chairman Josh McKoon defends the changes as measures to enhance election integrity.

Story 2: GHC Student Named a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar

Kara King, a student at Georgia Highlands College pursuing both an Associate and a bachelor’s in healthcare management, has been named a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar. This scholarship, part of a $210,000 program funded by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa, supports new Phi Theta Kappa members based on academic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. King, who found GHC to be the best fit for her studies and online learning needs, is thrilled about the award. She encourages involvement in campus organizations and emphasizes the value of returning to education.

Story 3: Here’s Who’s Running for Office in Holly Springs

On November 5, Holly Springs voters will choose a new mayor from two candidates: Mark Aurand, a veteran in building construction, and Ryan Shirley, a small business owner and youth sports coach. Current Mayor Steven Miller, who has served since 2017, is not running for re-election. Ward 3 Councilmember Michael Roy Zenchuk II and Ward 5 City Councilmember Jeff Wilbur are running unopposed for re-election. This follows two other student arrests for similar threats made on September 5 and 6. These incidents are reportedly inspired by the recent school shooting in Barrow County. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III stressed that the school system is taking these threats seriously, emphasizing that any form of threatening behavior is prohibited and can result in severe legal consequences. Sheriff Ezell Brown urges the community to work together to prevent further threats and violence.

Independent Cornel West and socialist Claudia De la Cruz each hold 1%. Trump leads among men and white voters, while Harris performs better with women and Black voters. Independents are evenly split. Georgia remains a key battleground state, having narrowly gone for Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Story 7: Board of Commissioners Denies Permit Request For RV Park

On September 10, the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners voted 2-0 to deny a special use permit for a proposed RV park and campground at 3260 East Fairview Road. Applicant Eugene West aimed to create a facility for military veterans, but the Conyers-Rockdale Planning Commission and residents raised concerns about traffic, environmental impact, and safety. Story 1: East Cobb to Celebrate 26th Annual EAST COBBER Parade + Festival

The 26th Annual EAST COBBER Parade + Festival, presented by CertaPro Painters, kicks off at 10 a.m. on September 14. Originally founded in 1995 by Cynthia Rozzo and now continued by Laren Brown, the event has grown from 500 participants to over 3,000, drawing more than 10,000 attendees. Known as the "Candy Parade," it features music, floats, marching bands, and candy. The parade honors local schools and VIPs such as principals and Teachers of the Year. After the parade, a free festival will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, offering entertainment, arts and crafts, carnival games, and local business showcases. For more details, contact Brown at 770-640-7070 or [email protected].

Story 2: How to Cope with Being an Empty Nester

As children head off to college, many parents face the emotional challenge of adjusting to an empty nest. Dr. David Ludden from Georgia Gwinnett College acknowledges that this transition can be bittersweet, reflecting on how deeply involved parents are in their children's lives. However, Ludden suggests viewing this milestone as a positive shift. It's an opportunity for parents to refocus on themselves and their relationship, exploring personal interests and hobbies, and prioritizing health. He also notes that as children become adults, the parent-child relationship evolves into a more equal, adult-to-adult dynamic.

Story 3: US Paralympic star Frech wants to take stigma out of disability

Ezra Frech, a 19-year-old Paralympian with a T63 high jump world record and two gold medals, aims to become the most successful Paralympian ever while challenging disability stigmas. Born with missing bones and a finger, Frech initially struggled with his condition but later embraced it, using his platform to promote inclusivity. He co-founded Angel City Sports to offer adaptive sports opportunities and highlights the barriers to disabled sports. Frech’s goal is to normalize disability through representation and awareness, encouraging society to view differences as strengths rather than obstacles.

Story 4: Inside the Political Fight To Build a Rural Georgia Hospital

In Butts County, Georgia, a new law, pushed by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and his father Bill Jones, aims to clear the way for a new 150-bed hospital. This change was made possible by a legislative shift in the state's "certificate of need" (CON) regulations, which previously required state approval for new hospital projects. Critics argue the new law benefits the Jones family financially, but Burt Jones insists it's about improving local healthcare access. The new regulations exempt rural counties like Butts from CON requirements, allowing the proposed hospital to move forward. The project is intended to provide better medical services compared to the existing, limited Wellstar Sylvan Grove Medical Center.

Story 5: AT&T Protestors Stand On Main Street As Strike Enters Third Week

The Communication Workers of America (CWA) strike against AT&T, now in its third week, involves 17,000 employees across nine southeastern states. Union members are picketing on Main Street in Madison, demanding better health care, benefits, and cost-of-living increases. The strike began in August due to AT&T's unwillingness to negotiate on major issues. CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. announced on Labor Day that the union was withdrawing from mediation, accusing AT&T of using the process as a delay tactic. The CWA, representing workers from various industries, seeks fair compensation for its members' long-term investments in the company.

Atlanta Braves closer Raisel Iglesias has been instrumental in the team’s strong push toward the postseason, earning National League Reliever of the Month honors for August. Since joining the Braves in 2022, Iglesias has excel with a 1.68 ERA, 63 saves, and 154 strikeouts in 140 appearances. This season, he boasts a career-best 1.26 ERA and 29 saves, tied for fifth-most in MLB. Despite shoulder issues last year, Iglesias has thrived, including a historic streak of retiring 38 consecutive batters. Known for his dedication and ability to pitch multiple innings, Iglesias has proven crucial to the Braves' success.

Story 7: New Mural Celebrates 'Synchronicity' in Sugarloaf Area

The Sugarloaf Community Improvement District, in collaboration with the Hudgens Center for Art & Learning, unveiled the "Synchronicity" mural by artist JONESY. Located at Sugarloaf Parkway and the I-85 underpass, the 11,000-square-foot mural is one of the largest in metro Atlanta. Designed by Krista M. Jones, the mural symbolizes unity and meaningful connections through vibrant patterns and colors. The project, inspired by Gwinnett County's "Vibrantly Connected" tagline, involved extensive planning and coordination over two years. Community response has been positive, with many praising the mural for enhancing daily commutes. Funding came from various sponsors, including the Gwinnett Creativity Fund, 12Stone Church, and Georgia Power.

    Commercial: DRAKE

Story 1: Contraband epidemic plaguing Georgia prison system

Georgia's prison system is grappling with increased contraband and criminal activity due to reduced staffing and deteriorating infrastructure, according to Commissioner of Corrections Tyrone Oliver. In 2023, 14,497 cellphones were seized in prisons, a significant rise from 7,224 in 2019, with many smuggled by large drones. These contraband phones are used to orchestrate illegal drug distribution and violent crimes, including murders outside prison. Staffing losses, exacerbated by COVID, and outdated prison infrastructure are key factors. Despite a reduction in inmate deaths and violent incidents trending down, the rising proportion of violent offenders increases the severity of incidents. The Senate study committee plans to make recommendations by December 1 to address these issues.

Story 2: Lilburn resident part of Surya Ensemble performing in September at Lawrenceville Arts Center

The Atlanta-based Surya Ensemble, featuring a unique blend of Eastern and Western musicians, will debut their performance "Elements" on September 12 at the Lawrenceville Arts Center. The ensemble, which includes Indian oboe player Ankit Patel, guitarist Sean Thrower, violinist Catherine Evergreen, percussionist Nima Ghadiri, and dancer Maria Martynova, combines music, dance, and visuals to explore the four elements—earth, wind, water, and fire. Patel, who aims to showcase world music in an intimate setting, describes the performance as a unique cultural experience ideal for those interested in orchestral and artistic presentations. Tickets are $55, with more details available at the Lawrenceville Arts Center website.

Story 4: Georgia Lands Federal Funds to Get the Lead Out of School Water

Georgia will receive $1.15 million in federal funds from the EPA to reduce lead in drinking water at schools and child-care centers. This funding is part of a $26 million national initiative to combat lead contamination. The EPA is also investing $15 billion to remove lead pipes and support local replacement projects. Critics argue that testing alone is insufficient due to lead's variable concentration, emphasizing the need for direct actions like installing filters and updating water stations.

Story 5: Former Atlanta CFO slapped with three-year prison sentence

Former Atlanta CFO Jim Beard has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for embezzling city funds for personal use. Beard, 60, used city money for luxury travel, personal items, and false tax deductions from 2011 to 2018. He stole tens of thousands of dollars, and in addition to prison, will serve three years of supervised release, pay a $10,000 fine, and restitution of over $177,000. The case was investigated by the FBI, IRS, and ATF. Beard pleaded guilty in March.

Story 6: Raffensperger calls State Election Board 'a mess'

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger criticized the State Election Board for focusing on the 2020 election while neglecting around 200 pending voting fraud cases. Raffensperger, speaking at the Gwinnett Chamber, accused the board of disrupting election preparations with recent rule changes, which critics say could delay result certifications. He claimed these changes, supported by three Republican board members, undermine voter confidence and burden election workers. Raffensperger also highlighted the backlog of cases that the board has failed to review, leading to local district attorneys handling them instead. He emphasized the need for timely action to ensure election integrity.

Story 7: Conyers Native Clint Mathis on National Soccer Hall of Fame Semifinal Ballot

Conyers native Clint Mathis has been named a semifinalist for the National Soccer Hall of Fame's 2024 Veterans Ballot. The ballot recognizes players retired for over 10 years. Mathis, a standout for the U.S. National Team with 46 appearances and a key goal against South Korea in 2002, also had a notable MLS career with 67 goals in 283 games. He played professionally from 1998 to 2010 and also had stints in Germany and Greece. The next step is for the Screening Committee to select 10 finalists, with the Veteran Voting Committee determining the inductees.

STORY 1: Newton County faces second rezoning lawsuit

In Newton County Superior Court, two lawsuits have been filed to challenge the county’s refusal to rezone properties for multi-use developments. The second lawsuit, by Sockwell Corners LLC and developers Integral Enterprises LLC and Ed Hutter, seeks to overturn the denial of a rezoning request for 158 acres at Ga. Highway 142 and U.S. Highway 278. The plaintiffs want the land rezoned from Agricultural Residential (AR) to Community Oriented Residential Development - Planned Residential Commercial (CORD-PRC) to allow for a higher-density project. The proposed development includes 294 single-family homes, 146 townhomes, mixed-use buildings, and commercial space. The plaintiffs argue that the current zoning renders the property unfeasible for development and contradicts the county's Comprehensive Plan, which supports higher-density projects. Another lawsuit by J.H. Morgan Farms and Inline Communities LLC also seeks to overturn a similar rezoning denial for a 93.79-acre parcel on U.S. Highway 278.

STORY 2: Construction begins on Madison Business Center

A new commercial development, the Madison Business Center, has begun vertical construction in Madison on a 12.97-acre site near I-20 and Highway 441. Atlanta Investment Properties is developing three industrial buildings totaling 114,400 square feet, with the first, a 36,500-square-foot structure, expected to be completed by December 2024. The center will offer space for businesses ranging from 12,000 to 40,000 square feet, with options for leasing or purchasing. Features include clear span buildings, 22-foot ceiling heights, heavy landscaping, 24/7 security, EV charging stations, and infrastructure for commercial trucks. STORY 5: Motion to dismiss filed in Lindsey, Banes case

A motion to dismiss three money laundering counts has been filed in U.S. District Court by suspended Newton County Board Chairman Marcello Banes and commissioner-elect Stephanie Lindsey. The charges are linked to a land transaction involving 40 acres transferred by the Joint Development Authority to Technology Park Atlanta and later sold to a hotel developer. The motion argues that the JDA had no legal interest in the property and that Lindsey's real estate firm followed standard brokerage practices, including a commission payment shared with Banes. The motion also disputes allegations of misleading the developer and money laundering related to funds used for Banes's home construction. A pretrial conference is scheduled for September 12.

Mail processing delays in Georgia affecting tax payments Local Election Officials Calling on State Board to Pause Future Rules Changes Fundraising Efforts Continue to Build New Home For Displaced Local Veteran

We’ll have these stories and more, coming up on your Georgia News Podcast and If you want community, local, and statewide news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    BREAK: DRAKE

Story 1: Mail processing delays in Georgia affecting tax payments

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff has raised concerns with the IRS about delays in mail processing affecting Georgians' federal tax payments. Constituents are facing penalties and interest for late or missing payments due to USPS delays. Ossoff, who previously questioned Postmaster General Louis DeJoy about mail delays in Atlanta, is now urging the IRS to waive penalties, adjust accounts promptly, and expedite tax refunds for those impacted by USPS issues. Despite improvements reported in June, mail delays persist, prompting Ossoff's latest intervention.

Story 2: Local Election Officials Calling on State Board to Pause Future Rules Changes

On August 21, Georgia local election officials urged the State Election Board to halt recent changes to election rules before the November election. Officials, concerned about disruptions, argue that last-minute rule adjustments could undermine public trust and complicate preparations for absentee, early, and Election Day voting. Recent changes include new requirements for reconciling ballot counts and allowing discretionary inquiries into election results. Critics argue these changes could lead to errors and delays, while proponents claim they are necessary to ensure election integrity. The board will consider further rule changes on September 20.

Story 3: Fundraising Efforts Continue To Build New Home For Displaced Local Veteran

Al Cox, a 72-year-old retired veteran from Morgan County, is getting a new home after his previous one was destroyed by fire in July 2023. The construction of his new home has begun thanks to a fundraiser initiated by David and Christie Pike, who were moved by Cox's story. Despite raising $100,000 with the help of Little Bethel Church, they aim to raise an additional $50,000 to complete the 1,200-square-foot house. The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $2,600 so far. Cox, who has faced numerous personal hardships, including losing his wife and son, has been living in a camper while seeking assistance. The project highlights community support and Cox's desire to advocate for other veterans.

Story 4: Ga. Supreme Court Hears Challenge To State Strip Club Tax

A Georgia Supreme Court hearing on Wednesday addressed a challenge to the state’s 1% tax on strip clubs, which funds child sex trafficking prevention efforts. The Georgia Association of Club Executives argued the tax unfairly targets businesses not involved in child trafficking, as minors are barred from strip clubs. They suggested massage parlors or lingerie studios might be more relevant targets. However, Deputy Solicitor General Ross Bergethon defended the tax, citing studies linking strip clubs to prostitution and asserting the tax’s appropriateness. The plaintiffs also argue that the tax violates First Amendment rights, but the state maintains that taxing strip clubs is similar to taxing other entertainment venues.

Story 5: Trail of Tears: Cherokee Voices Project Reveals New Insights

Andrew Jones, a history professor at Reinhardt University, is leading the Cherokee Voices Project, which focuses on 1838 property claims filed by Cherokee people during the Trail of Tears. These claims, filed against the U.S. government, offer a Native perspective on the forced relocation, contrasting with the previously dominant accounts from white officials and soldiers. Jones’s research highlights the resistance of the Cherokee to forced land privatization and the violence they faced. The project has digitized and transcribed these claims, providing valuable historical and genealogical insights.

Story 7: Madison Planning And Zoning Approves Changes To Allow For RaceTrac Gas Station

RaceTrac may soon build a new gas station in Madison after the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved a map amendment and variance for the project. Located on seven acres at 2090 Eatonton Road, the station will be situated in an area currently zoned C-4 (interstate commercial) and will require rezoning of other parcels to C-4. The proposal must still receive final approval from the Madison City Council. The new station will not include long-term parking, showers, car washes, or mechanics. Construction is expected to be completed by 2026.

STORY 1: Newton County Rejects Request to Pay Banes' Legal Fees

The Newton County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 to deny suspended Chairman Marcello Banes' request for the county to cover his legal expenses related to a federal indictment on charges of money laundering and fraud. The cost of his defense could range from $75,000 to $200,000, with Banes having already spent $40,000. The county is not required to pay these expenses, though it has done so in the past for other officials. Additionally, Banes was removed from several board appointments, and interim arrangements are pending. The indictments involve allegations that Banes and District 3 commissioner-elect Stephanie Lindsey misled a development authority about a commission payment.

STORY 2: Main Street Announces Open Late Downtown Dates

Madison Main Street is launching a new Open Late Downtown Program, featuring extended hours for select merchants until 7 p.m. on Fifth Fridays, Candlelight Shopping nights in December, and home tour weekends. Retailers will have themed nights, giveaways, and special activities. The first Fifth Friday event on August 30 will kick off with a football theme, offering free downtown swag for those in fanwear and including activities like dart art and cornhole. Participating businesses and events are listed on the City’s website.

STORY 3: Newton County Enacts 2-Year Moratorium on Residential Construction

Newton County has enacted a two-year moratorium on new residential construction projects to allow time for updating its zoning regulations. This pause affects new applications for residential rezonings, preliminary plats, and temporary building permits, but does not impact existing projects in the pipeline or those challenging denials. The county is working with a consultant to revise its Unified Development Code and will hold community meetings for public input. The moratorium provides time for the county to modernize its zoning code and may be lifted sooner if the update is completed ahead of schedule.

University System of Georgia Reports $21.9B in Economic Impact 'Complete Execution Debacle,' Ossoff says of Postal Service Early Voting to Include Weekend Dates in Cobb

We’ll have these stories and more, coming up on your Georgia News Podcast and If you want community, local, and statewide news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    Commercial: DRAKE

Story 1: University System of Georgia Reports $21.9B in Economic Impact

In fiscal 2023, the University System of Georgia (USG) had an economic impact of $21.9 billion, marking a 9% increase from the previous year, according to a study released on August 14. This impact includes $14.6 billion in direct spending and $7.3 billion from the multiplier effect in local communities. USG institutions created 163,332 jobs statewide, comparable to the combined impact of the top five employers in Georgia. Graduates from the Class of 2023 are projected to earn nearly $1.4 million more over their lifetimes compared to those without a degree. Chancellor Sonny Perdue highlighted the dual benefit of USG's economic contributions and its role in enhancing graduates' financial prospects.

Story 2: 'Complete Execution Debacle,' Ossoff says of Postal Service

U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff expressed frustration over the United States Postal Service's (USPS) inefficiency during a Cobb Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Ossoff highlighted that he receives more complaints about postal service issues than any other matter, noting a particularly low First-Class Mail On Time rate of 34% in north Georgia. He criticized Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's management decisions, including a poorly executed distribution plan, which he called a "management failure." Although only the USPS Board of Governors can remove DeJoy, Ossoff promised to continue applying public pressure for improvements. He stressed that reliable mail service is essential for citizens, businesses, and elections.

Story 3: Early Voting to Include Weekend Dates in Cobb

Cobb County residents can vote early for the November 2024 general and presidential elections on select weekends. The Cobb County Board of Elections approved early voting dates starting Oct. 15, with weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and extended hours on two Saturdays: Oct. 19 and Oct. 26. On Sundays, Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, five locations will be open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate voters and church-goers. Early voting ends on Nov. 1, with no voting from Nov. 2 to Nov. 4. Election Day is Nov. 5, and voters must visit their assigned polling location.

Story 4: Madison Adopts Industrial Development Regs, Falls Short On Developers' Demands

On August 12, Madison Mayor and City Council passed a new industrial zoning ordinance with a 4-to-1 vote, aiming to regulate industrial growth more tightly while giving the council greater control. The ordinance includes limits on building space and stricter conditions for developments, such as requiring a permit for projects exceeding certain thresholds for traffic and water use. Councilman Ed Latham opposed the ordinance, arguing it could hinder economic growth and negatively impact low-income residents. Despite his objections, the ordinance was adopted, replacing the Heavy Commercial (C5) district with a new Light Industrial Zone (I) and adjusting various land-use standards. Councilman Eric Joyce and Mayor Fred Perriman praised the ordinance as a necessary step and acknowledged the active role of citizens in shaping it.

Story 5: Industrial Park Coming to Ball Ground

On August 8, the Ball Ground City Council approved the annexation of a one-acre parcel at 1355 Old Canton Road into the city. This land, already zoned for light industrial use, will be added to a planned five-acre industrial park. Developer Scott Merrell will construct five buildings, starting with two: one for a model railroad club and another for a linen company. The annexation ensures that all buildings within the park will fall under city jurisdiction. Site work for the project is already in progress.

Bianchi's initiative provides a creative and practical solution for capturing the best angles of Duluth's scenic spots.

STORY 1: Newton County Amends Temporary Structure Ordinance

The Newton County Board of Commissioners has updated its zoning ordinance regarding temporary structures during home construction. As of August 6, permits for temporary buildings are now limited to six months, down from one year, and are only allowed on properties over 2 acres and outside subdivisions. Extensions must be approved by the Planning Commission, not administratively. The new rules address issues highlighted by Stone Lea residents, including long-term RV placements and sanitation concerns. The amendments aim to prevent prolonged use of temporary structures and ensure cleanliness and compliance.

STORY 2: The Retirement Of A 4-H Agent

Janet Woodard, who has been a beloved University of Georgia Extension Agent in Morgan County for 30 years, is retiring. Her final days at the Ag Extension office were marked by heartfelt farewells and celebrations from the community. Janet’s career has been dedicated to 4-H and youth development, mentoring countless children in skills ranging from livestock shows to STEM projects. Despite a demanding schedule and personal challenges, she has made a profound impact on many lives, fostering confidence and independence. Her departure is bittersweet, as her legacy of leadership and dedication continues to inspire those she has touched, including current 4-H agents and former students.

STORY 3: Conyers to Adopt Rollback Millage Rate

The Conyers City Council plans to reduce the millage rate from 13.33 to 11.97 mills for 2024, marking the sixth reduction in the past eight years, with three of those being full rollbacks. This reduction aims to offset increased property values, which could still result in higher taxes for some residents. Mayor Vince Evans noted that the rollback is intended to ease the tax burden amidst rising living costs. The City Council will finalize the millage rate at a meeting on August 15 at City Hall.

The free concerts, held every Friday evening, are presented by Coldwell Banker Lake Oconee/Lake Country and managed by Music Matters Entertainment. Attendees can enjoy music, food from Harvest & Honey, and bring blankets or chairs for a family-friendly evening.

STORY 5: Madison Approves 'Luxury RV Park' On Sovis Road

The Madison City Council has approved a rezoning plan to develop a “Luxury RV Park” on 35 acres at the end of Sovis Road, near Love’s Truck Stop. The site, previously zoned for industrial use, will be transformed into a Planned Commercial District to accommodate 110-120 high-end RV sites with amenities like sewer, water, electrical hookups, high-speed internet, and a bathhouse. Security measures will include cameras, a license plate reader, and on-site management. The park will only accept RVs under 10 years old and will not permit permanent residency. Developer Brooks Pennington is also donating $20,000 for the Madison Greenway trail and granting an easement for its development. Despite the council’s unanimous approval, Councilman Eric Joyce questioned the "luxury" aspect of the park, likening it to a “luxury trailer park.” Pennington expects the park to attract short-term visitors and benefit the local community.

Georgia PSC Hears Eminent Domain Case Kemp recommits to tort reform Two World Premieres from KSU’s Dance Department

We’ll have these stories and more, coming up on your Georgia News Podcast and If you want community, local, and statewide news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    Commercial: DRAKE GEOFF

Story 1: Georgia PSC Hears Eminent Domain Case

On August 6, a lawyer for Hancock County property owners urged the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to overturn a hearing officer’s recommendation allowing Sandersville Railroad Co. to use eminent domain to acquire 43 acres for the Hanson Spur project. The project aims to transport granite, farm products, and timber but has faced criticism from property owners and legal representatives who argue it lacks sufficient public benefit and detail. Opponents, including the Institute for Justice and the Southern Poverty Law Center, claim the project fails to justify its public purpose and impacts historically significant properties. Proponents argue that the project supports public use through increased trade and economic benefits.

Story 2: Kemp recommits to tort reform

On August 7, Gov. Brian Kemp announced he will continue advocating for major tort reform in the 2025 legislative session. Speaking at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's annual Congressional Luncheon, Kemp emphasized that while the 2024 session achieved a partial victory by limiting direct lawsuits against trucking companies' insurance carriers, significant reform remains a priority. He plans to hold a listening tour and roundtables with experts and industry leaders to shape his 2025 agenda. Kemp's push for reform aims to curb frivolous lawsuits and reduce insurance costs, a continuation of efforts dating back to a 2005 law that was later struck down by the state Supreme Court.

Story 3: Two World Premieres from KSU’s Dance Department

Kennesaw State University's Department of Dance recently concluded its July Eleo Pomare–Glen Conner Choreographic Residency. This summer, choreographers Christian Denice and Tristian Griffin created two original works with the KSU Dance Company. Denice’s piece, "Arena," explores internal conflict and external struggles through a wrestling-inspired narrative, while Griffin’s "Grow Today, Bloom Tomorrow" pays tribute to community and family sacrifices. The residency, now in its fourth year, aims to foster connections between students and professional artists. The resulting performance, "Double Exposure," will open the 2024-2025 season and is set for August 23-24 at the KSU Dance Theater. Tickets are available at KSUDance.com.

Story 4: New Rule Mandates Inquiry Before Certifying Election

On August 6, Georgia’s Republican-dominated State Election Board narrowly approved a rule change requiring county officials to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results, replacing the previous requirement to certify results by a set deadline. Proponents argue the change ensures accuracy and accountability, while critics fear it could lead to delays and disputes over election outcomes. Democrats and watchdog groups argue that the term “reasonable inquiry” is vague and could be misused to challenge results. The change, enacted just before November elections, has sparked controversy over its potential impact on the certification process.

Story 5: Harris, Walz debut White House ticket, vowing 'fight for future'

Vice President Kamala Harris and her new running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, made their debut together in Pennsylvania. Walz delivered a strong critique of Donald Trump, accusing him of undermining the economy, law and order, and fostering division. Walz emphasized his background in military service and teaching to connect with voters. Harris praised Walz as a unifying leader and highlighted his role in supporting her campaign. The pair's appearance in Philadelphia marked the beginning of a tour through key swing states ahead of the Democratic convention, aiming to boost their campaign's visibility and counter Republican attacks.

At the Paris Games, Poland's Aleksandra Miroslaw won the gold medal in women's speed climbing, marking her country's first gold in the sport's Olympic debut. Miroslaw, a world record-holder, completed the climb in 6.10 seconds, narrowly beating China's Deng Lijuan. Aleksandra Kalucka from Poland took the bronze. American Emma Hunt, a favorite for the gold, was unexpectedly eliminated in the quarterfinals after a slip. In men’s climbing, Japan’s Sorato Anraku topped the lead semi-finals, advancing to the combined boulder and lead finals. Tomoa Narasaki, a top contender, failed to qualify for the finals.

Story 7: Fox Theatre To Host 'Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song' Sept. 17

The Carter Center will host “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song” on September 17 at Atlanta's Fox Theatre to honor the former president’s 100th birthday. Turner Lake, a 26-acre lake in Newton County's Turner Lake Complex, has been recognized by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as a top fishing spot in metro Atlanta. Stocked annually with catfish, hybrid bass, and bream, it offers year-round fishing with a valid license and hosts two fishing events each year. The park features a range of facilities including a softball complex, gymnasium, playground, and walking trails. The Gateway to Fishing Program supports local fishing by partnering with communities to promote fishing events, provide technical assistance, and offer free use of fishing equipment through the Mobile Catch Center. Other top fishing locations in the area include Lenora Park and Piedmont Park.

STORY 2: Property Taxes Going Up Despite County Rollback Rate Approved

On August 6, the Morgan County Board of Commissioners adopted the state-recommended rollback millage rate of 9.686, down from 9.990, in a 3-to-1 vote. The decision followed debates over whether to further reduce the rate due to rising property values. Commissioner Blake McCormack opposed the rollback rate, advocating for a more significant reduction, while Commissioner Ben Riden supported a modest cut. Despite concerns that the rollback rate still represents a tax increase due to rising property values and the expiration of Governor Kemp’s Homestead tax break, the board decided to stick with the state’s recommended rate, citing budgetary constraints and a need for careful planning.

STORY 3: Conyers Man Arrested in Wife’s Shooting Death

In Conyers, 69-year-old Walter Hester has been arrested on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and illegal firearm possession after allegedly shooting his 63-year-old wife, Clordette Hester, multiple times in the face. On July 14, deputies found Clordette lying in her driveway with gunshot wounds, and neighbors reported seeing Walter driving away recklessly. Walter, a former detention and corrections officer, is in custody following the incident.

In late July, the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art (STMA) held its annual Founders Day Celebration, honoring local art teachers and raising funds for the museum. About 70 attendees enjoyed a talk by Yu-Kai Lin, a prominent art gallery owner and juror for the upcoming Queer Perspectives exhibit. Lisa Conner presented the Charlie Bonner Awards to retired art teachers Marjean Meadow and Laura Rice for their contributions to art education. The event, celebrating the museum's founder Sara Douglass Thomas, aimed to support STMA’s operations and keep educational programs free for school groups. The museum was thrilled with the event's success and community support.

STORY 5: UPDATE: Fatal Shooting in Newton County Under Investigation

The Newton County Sheriff's Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are probing a fatal shooting that occurred around 12:45 p.m. Monday near Interstate 20. The victim, 28-year-old Taywyn Mason from Covington, was shot near a vape shop at the Almon Road/Crowell Road interchange. Elan Shabazz, 32, of Conyers, has been arrested on multiple charges including murder and aggravated assault. Shabazz fled the scene but was later captured by deputies. Mason was taken to a local hospital where he died. Sheriff Ezell Brown has expressed condolences to Mason's family.

    Commercial: DRAKE

Story 1: Senate Begins Investigation Into Abuse Of Pregnant Women in Prison

At a Senate subcommittee hearing, Jessica Umberger shared her distressing experience of giving birth while serving a prison sentence. In August 2018, Umberger, who is now a care navigator in Atlanta, was forced into a Cesarean section at the Helms facility in Atlanta, despite her objections. She was separated from her newborn daughter, Jordan, for nearly three years. After being transferred to Lee Arrendale State Prison, Umberger endured three weeks of solitary confinement where her C-section wound became infected, and she received no medical support. The subcommittee, investigating abuses against pregnant women in prison, reported over 200 human rights violations and highlighted issues like inadequate medical care and the use of shackles during childbirth. The investigation continues, with calls for federal action to protect the rights and dignity of incarcerated women.

Story 2: ‘Low-Intensity’ Residential Growth Biggest Threat to Georgia Farming

At a state Senate study committee meeting, Katherine Moore from the Georgia Conservancy highlighted the alarming rate at which Georgia's farmland is being lost to single-family residential developments. Between 1974 and 2016, Georgia lost about 2.6 million acres of farmland, much of it converted into low-density residential properties. The Senate formed the Study Committee on Preservation of Georgia's Farmlands to address this issue and explore ways to support farmers and slow the loss of agricultural land. The committee will continue its work with hearings across the state and aims to issue recommendations by December 1. Key discussions include supporting struggling farmers and regulating land use to preserve farmland.

Story 3: Paul Passmore Finds his Passion in Professional Arm Wrestling

Oxford resident Paul Passmore, 44, has had a lifelong passion for sports, from karate and wrestling to mixed martial arts and powerlifting. After his college football career ended due to injury, he turned to arm wrestling after watching the reality show “Game of Arms” and discovering his cousin, a pro arm wrestler. Debuting in 2014, Passmore quickly excelled and is now a top North American arm wrestler. Recently, he achieved a significant victory by defeating European champion Akhmed Akmurzayev. Passmore, who has won numerous national titles, is set to compete in Istanbul and aims for a long career in the sport, inspired by older competitors. He maintains a strict diet and training regimen, feeling revitalized after losing 60 pounds.

Story 4: Mableton Man Named South Cobb Citizen of the Year

Barry Krebs, a Mableton resident and retired Kellogg's regional director, was honored as the 2024 South Cobb Citizen of the Year by the South Cobb Rotary Club for his extensive volunteer work. Over the past decade, Krebs has contributed to the South Cobb Lions Club, Sweetwater Mission, and Keep Cobb Beautiful. Recognized during a surprise ceremony at Presbyterian Village in Austell, Krebs' dedication to community service has also earned him the Keep Georgia Beautiful “Man of the Year” award. Krebs, who started volunteering in 2014 after noticing trash during his walks, finds his service both rewarding and therapeutic.

Story 5: State Botanical Garden at UGA receives $1.6 million grant for seed network

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia received $1.6 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to establish a native seed network for restoration projects. This funding, provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will support the creation of the Georgia Native Seed Network, which aims to produce locally adapted seeds for southeastern restoration efforts. The grant will fund new positions for conservation experts and aid in developing native plant material crucial for habitat restoration and disaster recovery. The initiative also seeks to create a market for native plants and support agricultural producers.

Story 6: Rome Downtown Authority Weighs In Against Small Bar Proposal

The Rome Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has opposed a proposed small bar ordinance that would relax certain restrictions for bars under 1,200 square feet, including the food-to-drink ratio and operating hours. The DDA suggests instead re-evaluating the current 50-50 food-to-drink ratio, license fees, and variances. The ordinance would allow small bars to sell liquor without food, but with limitations like an 11 p.m. closing time and a lower license fee. The DDA believes this approach may unfairly impact full-service restaurants and advocates for a review of existing regulations and fees. The matter will be considered by the Rome City Commission on August 12.

Story 7: Touring production of ‘Funny Girl’ shines as ‘the greatest star’

The touring production of "Funny Girl," now at the Fox Theatre, is a stellar success, dazzling with exceptional performances, staging, costumes, and choreography. Katerina McCrimmon shines as Fanny Brice, delivering powerful vocals and nuanced acting. The cast includes standout performances from Melissa Manchester as Fanny's mother and Izaiah Montaque Harris as Eddie Ryan. The show features vibrant tap dancing and integrates the audience into its vaudeville-inspired numbers. With its impressive production values and engaging performances, "Funny Girl" truly lives up to its declaration as the "greatest, greatest star."

Praised by major media outlets, including CBS News and the Washington Post, this show recreates the iconic rock band's legendary performances with remarkable accuracy. STORY 3: Newton County Sets Slightly Reduced Millage Rate

At a special meeting on Tuesday, the Newton County Board of Commissioners set a tentative 2024 millage rate at 8.242 mills, slightly down from last year’s 8.4 mills. The rollback rate is 7.9 mills, meaning property owners with increased assessments will face higher taxes. For a $300,000 home, this translates to about $32.13 more in taxes. District 1 Commissioner Stan Edwards motioned for the rate, supported by District 5 Commissioner Ronnie Cowan, while District 3 Commissioner Alana Sanders opposed it, advocating for more use of the county’s $60 million reserve fund. Sanders argued that the county’s growing tax base could justify a lower rate. The general fund budget of $99.5 million includes $1.1 million from reserves, with Edwards noting that budget increases were due to employee benefits and debt payments.

Woods defends dropping AP African American studies course Gunman flew drone over Trump rally area before shooting: FBI chief Trump Lead Over Harris in Georgia Within Margin of Error

We’ll have these stories and more, coming up on your Georgia News Podcast and If you want community, local, and statewide news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    Commercial: DRAKE

Story 1: Woods defends dropping AP African American studies course

State School Superintendent Richard Woods faced criticism after deciding against adding an Advanced Placement African-American studies course to Georgia's curriculum for the upcoming school year. Woods defended his stance, emphasizing that schools can still teach the course using existing standards or local curriculum choices. He expressed concerns about endorsing the entire AP course but assured that districts opting to use the African-American Studies course code from 2020 would receive state funding. Critics, including educators and Democratic lawmakers, argued that the decision hindered inclusive education and cited opposition to previous legislation limiting how U.S. history can be taught in schools.

Story 2: Gunman flew drone over Trump rally area before shooting: FBI Chief

Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old gunman, attempted to assassinate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, firing shots with an AR-style assault rifle. FBI Director Christopher Wray testified that Crooks flew a drone over the rally area two hours before the shooting but did not specify a motive. Crooks, positioned on a nearby building's roof, was swiftly killed by a Secret Service sniper. The incident left Trump injured, two attendees wounded, and a Pennsylvania firefighter dead. Wray disclosed that Crooks had crude explosive devices and a transmitter, although their detonation capability was limited. The FBI is investigating Crooks' internet searches and motive, finding a focus on public figures and Trump in recent days preceding the attempt. No evidence of accomplices has been found.

Story 3: Trump Lead Over Harris in Georgia Within Margin of Error

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are in a close contest in Georgia, according to a recent poll by Landmark Communications. Trump holds a slight lead over Harris among 400 likely voters, with 48.0% to 46.7%, within the 5% margin of error. Harris, now the presumptive Democratic nominee after Joe Biden's withdrawal, fares better than Biden did previously against Trump in Georgia. In a broader six-way race including other candidates, Trump leads with 45.8% to Harris's 44.3%. Harris performs strongly among younger, Black, and female voters, leading in these demographics, while Trump maintains an edge among older and white voters. Both candidates overwhelmingly secure support within their party bases, with independents favoring Harris by 9.1 percentage points.

Story 4: Georgia OBGYNs Attack Abortion Law

Georgia's strict abortion law, known as the "heartbeat bill," enacted in 2019 and effective from 2022 following legal challenges, is sharply criticized by OBGYNs in the state. At a hearing chaired by U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, doctors expressed concerns that the law forces women into high-risk pregnancies and impedes their access to reproductive healthcare. The legislation prohibits most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, a timeframe when fetal heartbeat can be detected. Exceptions for rape, incest, and medical emergencies are included, but doctors argue these are insufficient. They contend that the law limits their ability to provide comprehensive care, leading some doctors to leave the state. The issue remains contentious in the context of national abortion policy debates ahead of the presidential election.

Story 5: Floyd County Oks New RV Park in Cave Spring Over Opposition

Floyd County Commissioners unanimously approved a special use permit for an RV park near Cedar Creek RV & Outdoor Center in Cave Spring after revisions were made to address concerns. Owner Anthony Carver assured officials of a viable septic system and road upgrades. Nearby residents had raised issues about traffic safety, flooding risks, and potential crime. The approval includes conditions like limiting RV spaces to 50 and upgrading Davis Road to county standards. In another decision, the board narrowly approved a $2.2 million solar farm despite staff concerns about land use, citing its potential to provide energy to Georgia Power.

    We’ll be right back.

    Break: INGLES 5

Story 6: Environmental groups pushing to delay Georgia Power gas turbines project

In Georgia, an independent energy consultant recommended that Georgia Power postpone the construction of three new dual-fuel turbines at Plant Yates near Newnan. The consultant argued for evaluating potentially cheaper alternatives and reducing reliance on natural gas, citing higher costs and volatility in prices. Georgia Power seeks approval from the Public Service Commission (PSC) to build turbines that primarily use natural gas but can switch to diesel. Opponents, including environmental groups, expressed concerns about increased fossil fuel dependency and price volatility. However, the PSC's Public Interest Advocacy Staff supports the project, emphasizing periods of low natural gas prices and urgent capacity needs due to growing data center demand. A decision on the project is scheduled for August 20.

Story 7: US Secret Service director resigns after Trump assassination bid

US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following bipartisan criticism over the agency's failure to prevent an assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a July 13 campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Cheatle acknowledged the incident as the Secret Service's most significant operational failure in decades during her testimony before Congress. The 20-year-old gunman wounded Trump and fatally shot a Pennsylvania firefighter before being killed by a Secret Service sniper. Cheatle's resignation came amidst calls from both Republicans and Democrats for her to step down due to her handling of the aftermath and reluctance to disclose specific details about the attack.

    BREAK: Drake

STORY 1: Rockdale Residents Push for Millage Reduction

In Rockdale County, residents are urging the Board of Commissioners to lower the proposed 2024 millage rate, set at 18.69, which represents a 13.43% tax increase due to rising property values. The rollback rate, maintaining last year's tax revenue, is 16.477. Despite exemptions, a $100,000 home would face a $225.31 tax bill. Commissioners Sherri Washington and Doreen Williams are open to exploring reductions while balancing service needs. Residents voiced concerns over tax burdens exceeding home values, prompting calls for relief and budget scrutiny at recent public hearings. Further deliberations and a final decision are scheduled for early August.

STORY 2: Morgan County Commits Up To $250,000 Annually For Farmland Protection Program

In a groundbreaking move, Morgan County leaders have partnered with the Madison-Morgan Conservancy to establish a county-funded farmland protection program. Approved unanimously by the Board of Commissioners, this initiative allocates up to $250,000 annually from PILOT payments by Meta and Rivian, ensuring no direct taxpayer funds are used. The program aims to purchase conservation easements on rural properties, safeguarding them from future development. It's part of efforts to preserve agricultural lands vital for sustaining local industries amidst rising property values and urbanization pressures. Morgan County becomes only the third in Georgia to adopt such a program, signaling a proactive stance in rural conservation and economic sustainability.

STORY 3: Covington Teen Killed in Gas Station Shooting

In Covington, tragedy struck when 18-year-old Damenica Roddy was fatally shot at a Chevron gas station on Ga. Highway 36. The incident occurred when another vehicle pulled up beside Roddy and two male companions, aged 19 and 21, and opened fire. Roddy was critically injured and rushed to Piedmont Newton Hospital, where she later succumbed to her wounds. The Newton County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene but has not yet provided details on the suspect's vehicle or the type of weapon used. The victims' vehicle sustained damage during the shooting incident.

In Madison, Georgia, the Mayor and City Council faced a contentious decision over a proposed industrial zoning ordinance aimed at controlling growth while accommodating economic development. After a special-called meeting attended by concerned citizens and developers, the council opted to table the ordinance due to widespread dissatisfaction. Developers argued the regulations would deter quality projects, while residents feared inadequate protections against industrial expansion's impact on traffic and infrastructure. Mayor Fred Perriman urged compromise to balance growth and community needs. The council postponed the vote to August 12, aiming to revise the ordinance for a more acceptable outcome to all stakeholders involved.

STORY 5: Herald of Herons exhibit opens at Big Haynes Nature Center

The Herald of Herons permanent art exhibit at the Big Haynes Creek Nature Center in Conyers, Georgia, opened with 10 great blue heron statues designed by local students. These fiberglass sculptures, placed along 1.7 miles of trails at the Georgia International Horse Park, showcase artistic talents while promoting environmental awareness. Over 140 student entries were considered, with professional artists from The Sketching Pad bringing the winning designs to life. Conyers Mayor Vince Evans emphasized the exhibit's role in community wellbeing and environmental education, highlighting the collaborative effort involving students, teachers, artists, and local organizations. The project aims to enrich the natural habitat and inspire future generations through art and conservation.

Story 1: Lawsuit Challenges Delays in PSC elections

Two advocacy groups, Georgia WAND and Georgia Conservation Voters, have filed a federal lawsuit against Georgia, accusing the state of violating its constitution by delaying elections for the Public Service Commission (PSC) without proper authority. This legal action follows a recent Supreme Court decision not to hear a case challenging statewide PSC elections, which were claimed to dilute Black voting strength. The lawsuit argues that postponing the PSC elections allowed sitting commissioners to approve significant utility rate increases, which, they contend, could have been avoided with timely elections. The plaintiffs assert that extending terms without a constitutional amendment violates Georgia's legal framework for election timing and citizen voting rights.

Story 2: Plant Vogtle Nuclear Reactor Back in Service

Georgia Power has successfully restarted Unit 3 at Plant Vogtle after a brief shutdown due to a valve issue on one of its main pumps, restoring its contribution to the electric grid. Unit 3, operational since last summer, has maintained over 98% capacity utilization, exceeding the national average for nuclear reactors. Alongside Unit 4, which commenced operation in April, these reactors mark the first new nuclear facilities built in the U.S. since the late 1980s. Despite initial delays and cost overruns that escalated the project's total expense to approximately $35 billion, more than double the original estimate, the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) allowed Georgia Power to proceed, capping customer costs and stipulating shareholder responsibility for additional expenses.

Story 3: Schumer, Jeffries reportedly warned Biden against his candidacy

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have reportedly advised President Joe Biden to reconsider his candidacy, expressing concerns that his continued run could jeopardize Democratic prospects in the upcoming November elections. According to ABC News and The Washington Post, Schumer and Jeffries separately conveyed their apprehensions to Biden in recent meetings, highlighting fears that his candidacy might undermine the party's ability to control Congress. While White House spokesperson Andrew Bates affirmed Biden's commitment to his candidacy and legislative agenda, both Schumer and Jeffries' offices downplayed the reported discussions, emphasizing the privacy and direct nature of their communications with the President. Democratic concerns about Biden's electability have escalated following a challenging debate performance, leading to internal deliberations and public calls for his withdrawal from the race.

Story 4: Atlanta Traffic Is No Game- Except In One Gwinnett Man’s Mind

Ethan Simmons, a Lawrenceville resident, has developed a tabletop game called "Atlanta Traffic: The Card Game," inspired by the daily chaos of driving in Atlanta. Created during his frustrating commutes, the game is designed for 3 to 8 players who compete to finish their commute first using routes that include backroads, interstates, and highways. Players encounter Advantage, Delay, and Disaster cards reflecting real Atlanta traffic scenarios, from accidents to unexpected events like a bridge fire. The game aims to entertain with humor and satire about Atlanta's notorious traffic issues. Simmons launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund production, with plans to distribute the game by November 2024 if successful.

Story 5: Braves Unveil New Truist Park Seating Options

The Atlanta Braves are enhancing Truist Park for the 2025 season with expanded seating options. They announced plans to expand the Coors Light Chop House seating and introduce a new area called The Bullpen. The Bullpen, located in sections 152-155, will feature a private lounge, complimentary food and beverages, and other amenities. Chop House seating will expand into Sections 107-108, offering in-seat service, high barstool seats, and a $15 credit for purchases. These upgrades aim to elevate the ballpark experience and will be included in existing full-season memberships. Braves CEO Derek Schiller emphasized the goal of making Truist Park the premier destination for baseball fans.
