The Grateful Podcast with Jack Wagoner
    Episode 69
    Guesting Daniel Smith

In this absolutely fantastic conversation with my good friend, poet, and podcaster Daniel Smith, we discussed many things, including:
    - The magic of life and how to cultivate it
    - How to live your life like a myth and its benefits
    - Why explicit personal development content is less effective than fiction
    - The difficulties of never being satisfied
    - The constant need to do more that both Daniel and I feel
    - Each of us have a subjective truth, no objective truth
    - There is a massive difference between faith and religion
    - How to ground in the "present"
and some other pretty fun things too.

Daniel just left for a trip in which he hopes to find some quiet and peace away from all of the things he pushes himself to do. In the conversation, we talk about this problem of "never enough," and one of the reasons we relate is because it is that very problem that plagues me every day. In fact, next month I will be taking a trip with a similar goal.

The Grateful Podcast with Jack Wagoner
    Episode 67

In this solo episode of The Grateful Podcast, host Jack Wagoner dives deep into why we make the decisions we make, challenging the common belief in human rationality. Drawing from insights in The Undoing Project by Michael Lewis and the groundbreaking research of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, Jack questions whether logic and reason are really guiding our behavior—or if we’re missing something deeper.

He shares a vulnerable personal story of choosing between Harvard and Northeastern and explains why trusting his gut feeling led him to a more expansive, fulfilling decision. This episode explores themes of behavioral psychology, intuition, self-examination, and how to build a life based on internal truth rather than external validation.

The Grateful Podcast with Jack Wagoner
    Episode 65
    Guesting Susan Piver

What if meditation wasn’t about fixing yourself—but about discovering who you truly are?

In this soul-expanding episode of The Grateful Podcast, Jack Wagoner sits down with Susan Piver, bestselling author, longtime Buddhist practitioner, and founder of the Open Heart Project, the world’s largest virtual mindfulness community. Together, they explore the magic of meditation—not as a productivity tool, but as a profound path toward truth, love, self-compassion, and awakening.

They unravel the paradox of non-attachment in a goal-obsessed culture, reframe suffering through the Buddhist lens of dukkha, and dive into the difference between improving yourself and becoming yourself. If you’ve ever felt like meditation was supposed to calm you down—but instead opened something deeper—you are not alone.

This is not your typical “5 tips to meditate better” kind of conversation. This is a re-enchantment of mindfulness. A reminder that presence is magic. That sitting quietly might be the most rebellious, loving act in a noisy world.

The Grateful Podcast with Jack Wagoner
    Episode 61

In this episode of The Grateful Podcast, I dive deep into the science of gratitude — and how it can literally rewire your brain for greater happiness, emotional resilience, and life satisfaction.

I blend cutting-edge research from neuroscience and positive psychology with personal stories to show how cultivating gratitude changes your brain’s biochemistry, improves emotional regulation, and strengthens your mental health.

    Key Takeaways:
    • Gratitude is a mindset and daily practice, not just an emotion.
    • Practicing gratitude consistently reshapes the brain’s neural pathways (Zahn et al., 2009).
    • Gratitude activates brain areas associated with moral cognition and emotional regulation.
    • Small, daily acts of gratitude dramatically boost happiness and life satisfaction (Emmons & McCullough, 2003).
    • Gratitude fosters deeper connections, stronger self-esteem, and long-term well-being.

The Grateful Podcast with Jack Wagoner
    Episode 58

At 18, I don’t have all the answers — but I’m asking the questions most people are afraid of.

    Who am I really?
    What’s “good” or “bad”?
    Why does love matter?
    What’s the meaning of life?
And how the hell do we live it right?

This episode is a dive into the big stuff — the deep, un-Googleable questions. The kind of things that keep you up at night but also move you closer to who you’re meant to become.

It’s raw, personal, and grounded in curiosity. I’m not trying to be your teacher — I’m just someone walking alongside you, sharing what I’m learning.

    🧠 What You’ll Take Away:
    • Identity isn’t something you are — it’s something you chase
    • Good people often endure pain that shapes their character
    • Love is real, and it connects us in ways logic can’t explain
    • The meaning of life might be simpler than we think: help others rise
    • Curiosity is the fuel for real, personal growth
    • You don’t need all the answers — just the courage to ask the right questions

    🎯 Sound Bites:

“Good people seek out the bad things.”
    “Difficulty defines who we become.”
    “You should always be learning.”
“Most people live their lives 15 minutes at a time.”
“The right life? It’s the one that aligns with your values.”

    🗺️ Chapters:

00:00 — Exploring Identity and Change
04:20 — The Nature of Goodness and Hardship
    07:39 — Understanding Love

    Episode 54
    Guesting John R. Miles

I had the pleasure of speaking with John R. Miles, host of the top 0.01% podcast Passion Struck and author of the #1 bestselling book of the same name. John's story is fascinating and I was so interested in interviewing him because many of his ideas are counter to what we are conditioned to believe.
John, also a former U.S. Navy officer, was an executive at Intel, one of the largest companies in the United States at the time; he was as materially successful as he could be, and yet he still wasn't satisfied.

In this episode, I got curious with John about what led him to become "passion struck" and pivot to retaking control of his life, optimizing for fulfillment over external success and validation. We talked about the negative consequences of ambition and how they can be balanced with gratitude, and why we need to focus on changing one thing at a time for maximum effectiveness.

This was one of the best conversations I've ever had. I can't wait to hear your feedback on it.

Here were some of my big takeaways:
Everyone deserves to be seen, valued, and significant.
You have to pick the mission that you want to take on.
Life is finite and it's a hell of a lot longer than you think.
You have to be really intentional about doing the work.
The most incredible person you'll ever meet is you.
You have to cultivate the friendships you want.
Gratitude is a very reinforcing practice.
    You have time to pivot.
You have to figure out what it is you're supposed to do.
You can't do everything you want.

    The Grateful Podcast
    Episode 52

Are you trapped in miserable righteousness and chasing empty success?

The more I learn about humans, the more I realize just how egotistical we’re wired to be. I don’t mean that as an insult — ego clearly has some evolutionary perks — but if you want to succeed in life (especially in situations you didn’t perfectly plan for), you’ve got to break free from that automatic, self-justifying loop.

In this episode of the Grateful Podcast, I explore the concept of 'miserable righteousness'—the tendency to cling to preconceived notions and judgments that lead to unnecessary suffering. I share personal anecdotes and insights on how ego can trap us in misery and prevent us from fully engaging in experiences. I emphasize the importance of maintaining an open mind, extracting value from every situation, and cultivating a gratitude mindset to enhance personal growth and fulfillment.

    Takeaways:
Many people fail before they even start due to preconceived notions.
Ego can trap us in a cycle of misery and self-justification.
Being right often comes at the cost of our happiness.
We can choose to learn from every experience, even the unpleasant ones.
Saying no to things that don't align with us allows us to say yes to what truly matters.
Our mindset can significantly affect our experiences and outcomes.
Extracting value from experiences can lead to personal growth.
Gratitude can transform our perspective on challenging situations.
We have the power to change our narrative and feel better about our circumstances.
Living with a growth mindset leads to a more fulfilling life.
