Updates to Episodes 7, 14, 21 & 28: Removed
(Oct 28)
The Gravity Well issued a Public Statement on October 11, 2024.
We re-recorded Episode 28, replaced Episode 7, and deleted Episodes 14 and 21 due to inadequate vetting of the original guest. We aim to host authentic conversations with members of the communities or concerned groups discussed. We apologise for unintentionally offending the Blackfoot Confederacy. Our vetting process has been updated to ensure we have appropriate community representation and support on a topic before we proceed.
It was recommended that we dedicate an episode to discussing our mistake and better understanding the risks of misrepresentation. This conversation occurred on Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024. Please email [email protected] for further information.
We are extremely grateful to the Blackfoot Confederacy for allowing us to work through this issue together.

Every person needs clean water to live and Alberta's provincial water laws are not being upheld. The water regulations are being delegated to the municipal level and altered to support industry (mining and gravel). Neil, Joyce, and Christina join us from Mountain View, Dale and Adele from Red Deer, and Ian and Mike from Sturgeon Counties to explain the multidecade battle they have fought to protect Alberta's alluvial (gravel) aquifers. A must-watch!

After exploring the "why" of The Gravity Well conversation in Round 1, and questioning "Who-is-who-in-the-Zoo" in Round 2, you explore our collective goals in Round 3. You are part of an Imperial | Colonial system that focuses on extracting resources at the expense of communities and the environment. This system prevents us from the human experience of love and compassion for one another. The remedy is to promote local action and economy. Embrace the solidarity community, and care for one another, while holding leaders accountable for the continued exploitation of the environment and her people. Common ground is here for the taking, join a local community organization focused on standing up for the innocent or the environment. Be a part of a future you may be proud of!
This round includes conversations with Alex and I (15), Regan Boychuk (16), Harley Bastien (17), Shannon Stunden Bower, J. Bruce Smedley (18), Janet Pennington, Kristy Jackshon, Lori Curtiss (19), Beau Shaw, Walaa Katoue, and Wesam Khalid (20).

In Episode 17, I visit with Harley Bastien at his Buffalo Rock Tipi Camp in the Piikani Reserve on the Old Man River in Southern Alberta. Harley is a caregiver and truth-teller, “born on the Piikani Nation and raised in the Oldman's River Valley by his parents and grandparents. From childhood, Harley was taught to live in harmony and balance with nature and the natural order of things. He was also made aware of the spiritual energies of the land and the importance of preserving and protecting these spiritual energies. One of his grandmother’s sayings is, ‘If the spirit of the land leaves all the animals, planets and people will suffer, and will no longer be’.” His father and grandfather taught Harley how to hunt, trap, fish, and work with animals on the family ranch. “His mother and grandmother taught him to harvest plants for food and medicines along with the traditional daily duties of early Blackfoot life before the arrival of the Europeans.” He was shown the various locations of the spiritual energy power spots where vision quests and other spiritual connections happen.
This conversation has stayed with me and grows every time I return to it. I updated our Welcome Statement to state both Truth and ReconciliACTION, correctly. I can now catch myself referring to nature as if it is something I own. Your humility and expectation of accountability to Mother Earth are greatly appreciated, Harley! I aim to learn more to adopt the Piikani way in my own life.
Welcome to The Gravity Well where we break down heavy ideas into small buckets anyone can handle! In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge we are in Blackfoot Treaty 7 territory and Metis District 15 lands. We take reconciliACTION by seeking the wisdom of elders and individuals who aim to restore water, air, land, life, and community.
