I am so thrilled to welcome our first international guest to The Joy of SUP today!
Vikki is a British-born adventurer and founder of She SUPs, her paddleboarding business in Sydney, Australia.
She SUPS is an all women's community focussed on empowering women + girls through SUP adventures.
Vikki moved to Sydney in 2015 + within a few months was hooked on paddling. First, it was kayaking, but then came SUP.Being on the water helped her process working in a toxic corporate environment, visa struggles, loneliness, being away from family + living with anxiety. Through kayak and SUP she gained strength, learnt new skills and found her identity. It helped her create a stronger connection to Country, build friendships and connect with and learn from Mother Nature.
Conducting research, during the initial brainstorming stages of the She SUPs concept, Vikki was shocked (but at the same time not surprised due to personal experience) by the statistics around barriers to participation in adventure-sports for women, which were preventing so many women across Australia from gaining these benefits.
As she read these studies she could definitely relate. Unfortunately, she had found that sometimes being a female adventurer/paddler could be tough, and yet, it really shouldn’t be.
Therefore fuelled by her own experiences, and determined to provide a better, more supportive outlook for women Vikki decided to:
Take on an adventure challenge to raise publicity and awareness of deeply-rooted discriminatory social norms and stereotypes that often prevent women from pursuing adventurous activities/outdoor sports and get the She SUPs mission out into the world!! This was the She SUPs Sydney Expedition where she paddle boarded 30 waterways of Sydney in 30 days during September 2019. Build an all women’s SUP community focused on creating a safe environment for women to try something new, learn, grow, connect with others and the planet and ultimately feel empowered through adventure. We also talk about:
Her Connect to country adventures and retreatsLockdown challenges to support her community + raise money for women in AfghanistanSetting her clients up for success and the power of community and supportHer favourite piece of Overboard kitAdvice for someone who wants to SUP but feels unsureHer SUP online courseTraining with ASI in England Winning a prestigious award New South Wales (NSW) Office of Sport 'Her Sport, Her Way' Local Champion Award in recognition of her achievements in 2021 for increasing female participation in sport.Instagram: @shesups_

I am thrilled to welcome Holly Pye to The Joy of SUP Podcast.
I first met Holly when I asked in SUP Sisterhood for a sleep specialist. What I didn't realise that as well as working in the NHS as a sleep physiologist and running her own specialist sleep clinic - Stars Sleep Clinic - Holly is a very successful SUP racer and downwinder!
Holly is a SUP racer living in South Devon. She enjoys the competitive side of the sport and has raced in the GBSUP National Series since 2017. In 2021, Holly travelled to Hungary with her SUP for the ICF World Championships where she came 13th in the long distance race - an 18 kilometre race against some of the world's best!Holly loves being in or on the ocean and takes any chance she can to get out there. She grew up around the water and now does lots of different watersports. When the weather turns she can often be found downwinding along the Devon or Cornwall coast, riding the bumps on her SUP from one point to another and enjoying every minute of it.
When Holly is not on the water, she loves to help others. She trained as a sleep physiologist and runs Stars Sleep Clinic where she offers cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia and supports people with a variety of different sleeping difficulties.
Holly is now a team rider for Starboard SUP, SUP North Devon and Paddle Logger. All organisations which care for the oceans and environment and allow us all the opportunity to protect what we love.
Growing up by the sea and her water loving family - everyone SUPS!Downwinding - what it is, how to start safely, the safety aspects that Holly takes into consideration every time she goes out, joining a SUP downwinding groupStarting a SUP club at universityThe power of community in paddleboarding and especially Anna Little's incredible helpThe superstar Marie BuchananSUP racing - Read Holly's report for Paddlelogger about Hungary ICF World Championship races The importance of sleep and how it impacts our wellbeing and performance Tips on how to get a better night's sleep and tips if you aren't sleeping wellThe importance of good nutrition as well as recovery when you are training hardBeing relaxed around food when travelling The joy of Carbis BayHer dream race Molokai

I am so thrilled to welcome Emma Love to The Joy of SUP Podcast today.
Here's Emma: When I was 45yrs old, I along with my very young son had our very first go on kayaks at Holme Pierrepont National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham. While on the water, we saw some children playing on paddle boards. We quickly exchanged our kayaks for SUPs + I was hooked!
This was the beginning of an incredible journey. Five years later, my writing is published online with British Canoeing, I was the 2nd woman in the UK to qualify as a British Canoeing White Water SUP Coach!
In 2020 I became a British Canoeing #She Paddles Ambassador. In 2021 I was invited to join the Californian Watersport Collective Ambassador programme.
The role of #ShePaddles Ambassador has empowered me to speak + write about my own paddling journey to inspire other women. This has included podcasts in the UK with SUPFM, in USA with Paul Clark, and with Etienne Stott, Olympic Slalom Gold Medal Winner.
In February 2021, I was thrilled to write a series of interviews celebrating the explosion of women in the White Water SUP coaching route for SUPMagUK. I am very proud of this year long project and so honoured to chat with Jenna Sanders, Jessica Phillip, Lisa Boore, Charlotte Louise, Louise Royle, Beth Kirby, Julie Vigor and Joyce Johnston. All incredible women, inspiring paddlers + talented coaches.
Summer 2021 I took a tucked away dream of mine + turned it into a reality - my very own SUP coaching business Wotbikini Stand Up Paddleboarding.
I specialise in building women's confidence on the water via stand up paddle boarding. I am very pleased to be a British Canoeing Delivery Partner.
It was an amazing first season, wonderful to support so many inspiring women. We have learnt together, developed, laughed + really enjoyed having time on the water.
2021 my business was nominated for two British Canoeing 'Delivery Partner' Awards. I am delighted to have been selected for both the 2022 'Engagement Award Finalist' & 2022 'Quality Experience Award Finalist'.
2022 – SUP Mag UK - Interviewing 8 of the 16 #ShePaddles Ambassadors about their SUP Journeys.

I first discovered Caroline whilst reading and listening to her book Move! The New Science of Body over Mind and I was fascinated by the research she shared. It seemed to explain why we love to paddleboard and the science behind why it makes us feel so good. When I saw that she enjoyed SUP I was very excited to ask her onto the podcast!
A little bit about Caroline:
Caroline originally planned to be a PE teacher but got sidetracked by science. The author of Move! she is also a science writer, editor and consultant and writer for New Scientist. She has also written for The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph and the BBC amongst others. She is passionate about the potential of movement to transform the way we think and feel and aims to bring the research behind it to as wide an audience as possible. She gets her movement kicks through yoga, paddleboarding and cycling. And when she's not doing that, she's usually walking the dog.

I discovered Lesley on Instagram when I saw her fundraising for RED January, a campaign founded by Hannah Beecham encouraging us to move every day to Beat The Blues in January and fundraise for mental health charities.
Lesley tells us more:
My love of the outdoors grew with me from a young age when we would go for hikes for my little legs, through woodland, farmland, fields, or by the lakes and rivers. If we weren’t walking, we were cycling miles along dirt tracks in the Hertfordshire villages or playing outside. I can't tell you how much I dislike being inside! ‘Outside is the best side’ and where I feel that sparkle, that warm feeling.
18 years ago, I moved to Bedford, a short walk away from the river and the country park and knew instantly that being closer to nature felt better, years went by where I enjoyed these blue and green spaces by myself and with friends and family.
Returning from holiday several years ago, I had a SUP taster session on my local river, the River Great Ouse and I was hooked! After spending as much time as I could on the water and attending different SUP courses and clinics, I decided to go for my SUP Instructor Qualification with ASI and now… Heron and Hush is heading into it’s third year!
There’s nothing I love more than seeing those smiles at the end of a session and the incredible effect being on the water has on everyone, from the soothing and calming moments where we connect with nature to the fun and frolics we have.
Heron and Hush has grown so much, through some tough times! I think we provide something for everyone, new experiences, edging out of your comfort zone with that support and knowledge on hand.. I want to make SUP accessible for everyone in a way that they enjoy and have the most fun!

I'm thrilled to welcome Hayley Browning to The Joy of SUP Podcast today!
Known for her infectious energy and love of the outdoors, Hayley is co-founder of the award-winning Paddle Cabin and British Canoeing SUP Coach, and it’s safe to say paddleboarding has completely transformed her life since her diagnosis of breast cancer in 2017 at the age of 27.Paddleboarding has allowed her to reconnect to nature, the feeling that had been missing for her since 2010 where she lived in a wooden cabin with no electricity on a Wolf Lake in Minnesota. While having an 11 year career in the charity-corporate partnership world taught her a lot, it’s not the environment that would help her overcome the long-term physical and mental effects of having breast cancer at such a young age, unlike the positive wellbeing effects of the outdoors.
After lockdown’s reflection time, quitting her 9-5 office job without a real plan and risking her life savings to follow her dream of working on the water paid off, with the opportunity of a lifetime soon coming her way. Fast forward six months, alongside her friend Jo Taylor, Hayley opened the Paddle Cabin’s door and brought the paddle life to Kent, winning awards for their paddleboarding business which has water safety and wellbeing on the water at it’s heart.
Combine that love of nature, with her passion for introducing people to adventure, and getting into the nitty gritty of technical SUP coaching, that’s what you can expect from time with Hayley. Hopefully this episode will give you a flavour of paddle life at the cabin and inspire you to take that leap into your unknown, and trust the net will appear, like it did for Hayley.
We talk about:

With thanks to the incredible guys at @FatStickBoards and very generous donations, OneWave Sidmouth provides opportunities for people to experience Paddleboarding and other water based activities depending on the sea conditions.
With thanks to a previous guest Becky Dickinson for introducing Evie to me! You can listen to Becky's podcast episode here.

I am so thrilled to welcome Nicky Green to the podcast today!
Nicky is Chief Operating Officer at The 2 Minute Foundation.
She is 42 and lives in Croyde, North Devon with her 2 girls, husband Graham and her dog Pixie. In 2019 I fundraised for The 2 Minute Foundation with my C2C SUP adventure from Liverpool to Goole, creating 4 beach clean stations. I am a very proud Ambassador.
After graduating with a BA degree in 2000, Nicky travelled to Mexico + New Zealand. She worked in Australia with one job overlooking Sydney Harbour bridge and the blue mountains and loved every minute!
On her return, she worked in financial PR, then project management but jumped at the opportunity to join Graham in India for 6 months where she travelled and volunteered for a Women’s empowerment charity.
After working in London, the pull back to North Devon and the Atlantic coast was magnetic.
At the end of her maternity leave for her firstborn, she started working with Martin Dorey, founder of The 2 Minute Foundation for his writing business 1 day a week.As traction on the 2 minute beach clean hashtag grew, she listened intently into the conversations between Martin and Dolly, the social media manager and wanted ‘in’! Starting out with the bookkeeping, online shop and station sales, she soon picked up more hours to work with corporate relations, new campaigns, recruiting the wider 2 minute team and being instrumental to transition into charity status.
She now helps to drive The 2 Minute Foundation forwards with the growing and awe inspiring team and adores working for a charity that aligns with her values. She is 2 Minute through and through, always on the look out for new 2 Minute opportunities and litter (!), continually learning and seeking out new adventures.
In addition to the love of SUP, her hobbies include running, Pilates, singing and dipping in the sea!
In this episode we also hear how Nicky's Grandfather was enjoying paddleboarding in the 1940s!

I am so thrilled to welcome Becky Dickinson to the podcast today!
Becky is a paddle boarder based in the South West of the UK. She took up paddling in 2013 after her friend Guy set up Jurassic Paddle Sports in Sidmouth, Devon.Although Becky was born in Yorkshire and spent her early years living in Hebden Bridge, her family moved to Devon when she was 6 years old and has been a water baby ever since. She started sailing at the age of 7 and spent many weekends playing in the surf on the North Devon coast.
As surfing became more competitive on the water, she looked for a sport that was more accessible and paddle boarding was perfect!
Last year Becky set up a WhatsApp group for paddle boarders based in the South West of the UK. It’s allowed women to meet up, make friends, share advice and knowledge of SUP and explore new paddle locations with great company!
Becky is also taking on a paddle boarding challenge with her friend John, to raise money for cancer research which has impacted her life as with many others over recent years. They will be paddling across to the Scilly Isles from Cornwall, planning is still in its early days but will share the details of when they come available.
We will share the links to Becky's fundraising page on social media.
You can find Becky on Instagram here @beachy_bex.
Her website is: www.supbecks.com
She is an Ambassador for Sealion Boards and BAM Clothing.
She trained with BSUPA to become a SUP Instructor at Edge Watersports.
Becky also shares more about One Wave Sidmouth - which is super as we will be having Evie on the podcast to talk about it more soon!
You can find John Horsfall's podcast here: The Modern Adventurer.
Here is a link to the Red Flotation Device Becky mentions.I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! I'd love to hear your thoughts and do follow Becky.

I'm so thrilled to introduce Dr. Sarah Perkins to you on The Joy of SUP Podcast!
Sarah is a wildlife biologist at Cardiff University whose work focuses on wildlife diseases. She works mostly outdoors, in the field, collecting data on everything from small wild mice to (extremely large) polar bears, but no matter the size of the study animal, she’s always got her eyes on the community that lives on, or in, her study species; the parasites.
When not studying disease transfer in wildlife, Sarah is a keen SUP surfer and racer living on the Pembrokeshire coast. In recent years Sarah has combined her love of SUP with that of science, finding that her SUP works well as a floating laboratory for her marine research. Over the last 10 years Sarah has been carrying out research on the health of a small, remote coral reef community in Tobago.
The SUP has become an important part of the research equipment used, with it not only being the form of transport to the study sites, but a platform from which to observe the reef and collect samples.Back in the UK, Sarah is an advocate for wildlife conservation, education and responsible engagement. She can frequently be spotted paddling her SUP while wearing a mask and snorkel; ready to jump off and explore the underwater world.
Here is a link to the cleaner fish on Kathryn Ellen Whittey's You Tube that Sarah mentions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGysteqPDNY&list=UUhXwpcds97F259nXaPI7KWg&index=8
In this episode we talk about the iNaturalist app and how we can all add to the scientific data on wildlife.
Sarah talks about seal haul out sites and mentions Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust and Sue Sayer.
We mention SUP Mag UK writer and SUP super woman Sarah Thornely too: here is here episode: https://thejoyofsuppodcast.buzzsprout.com/1532449/8171727-sarah-thornely-uk-sup-racing-champion-broadcaster-supjunkie-cheerleader-extraordinaire

I am so thrilled to welcome Gill Ryan to the podcast!
Gill lives in a town in Hampshire on the South Coast surrounded by water but this doesn’t mean she grew up as a water baby, in fact the opposite. She tried SUP in the summer of 2019 and instantly fell in love and SUP soon became a big part of her life. There was just one challenge and that was getting over her fear of the water!Being married and a mum of 2, Gill loves nothing more than getting her family out on the water with her, she even got her over 70 year old dad out in a kayak for the first time in decades. Gill tells us all about preparation and patience she uses to take her children on the boards!
In 2020 Gill became an Ambassador for three fantastic companies; Bluefin, Stand Clothing and Yak Paddling Adventure Equipment and in recent months has also taken on the role as a Community Guardian for Planet Patrol with her friend Kerry, whom she met via SUP.
Being a naturally shy person around people she didn’t know, SUP has boosted Gill’s confidence dramatically. Never would she have imagined meeting up with a group of people she didn’t know and thoroughly enjoying herself. She has made some fantastic friendships.
Her new-found confidence has now led her to recording reviews on products. She shares that she still gets tongue tied and it takes several attempts along with a lot of editing but these reviews have proven very popular, especially her YAK Kallista Buoyancy Aid review. She also loves helping small businesses, promoting their clothing/accessory ranges and often gets sent items to promote on her ever growing Instagram @sup_loving_gill account.
In summer 2020 Gill organised three local meet ups, where around 20-30 people turned up each night. Going forward her plan is to organise more meet ups, including fancy dress nights and litter picks, organised through the local sup groups on Facebook.
Owning a VW campervan gives her the freedom to travel further afield and stay overnight. Gill is currently organising various trips around the UK including Devon, Lake District, Swanage and East Sussex.
Gill featured in the 2021 Spring edition of the SUP International Magazine, where she talks about the joy of being able to get back out on the water after restrictions lifted, what motivates her and her kit .
Along with SUP, Gill’s other passion is photography, no fancy cameras just her mobile. For her combining the two has been a dream. She loves nothing more than catching a beautiful sunrise or sunset from her board, spotting glorious water reflections and snapping those stunning autumnal shots on the Basingstoke Canal.
I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! I'd love to hear your thoughts and do follow Gill.
