You may have heard the phrase, "It's in the genes!" Right?
Normally when the phrase is used as a way of highlighting skills, it is generally used in a celebratory way to make sure you know this is something that cannot be duplicated because it is in the genes.
I tend to see this a lot in the sports industry as players celebrate their skills and pridefully proclaim where those kinds of skills originate.
But when last have you heard someone say, "It's in the genius?"
I would dare say, very little or never.

It's amazing how we are more apt to remember stories than we do facts.
I'm able to remember a place, person, or event more if I have an associated story attached.
However, if you were to tell me facts and expect me to remember as I do stories, forget it. It ain't happening.
This is why someone coined this phrase: Facts tell. Stories sell. Oh, how true this is.
Why is it then that leaders don't use more stories in communicating with their people?
I believe one of the reasons is vulnerability. It does take some vulnerability to tell stories especially those that are more personal in nature.

To the hungry, it's the one who provides food.

To the homeless, it's the one who provides shelter.
Having said that, I believe the term essential can be used in the context of skills.

Notice the word AND. It is a very useful word when you want to truly engage people in a conversation. It is the opposite of using the word BUT.
How many times have you been in conversation and someone says something and follows up immediately with the word BUT? When he or she did, what was your gut reaction?
If you are like me, your system went into alert and tensed up as you braced for what would come next. Isn't that so?
The word BUT tend to negate all that came prior to its insertion into the conversation.
However, if that person was able to skillfully use the word AND instead of BUT, the outcome would be a whole lot different. Wouldn't it?

Every one of us struggles with one thing or another. There are some people who are not able to relate to your struggle. But if you look long and hard, you'll find someone who does.
None of us are exempt from struggles.
With that in mind, we can safely say, we are not the only one that has a certain struggle even though we may feel that way at times.
As a coach and licensed therapist, I get to hear people's struggles constantly.
One of the struggles that are presented mostly by men, even though some women struggle as well, is that of pornography.
Porn is a multi-billion dollar industry and there are multiple thousands of people, mainly men, who are addicted to it.
But what about a leader?
Does this addiction to pornography have any effect on how they lead others?

I know this sounds like a contradiction. Right?
Soft and steel don't go together. Is this a mistake?
On the surface, it seems like these two words should not be used together because steel is always seen as something tough. As a matter of fact, those are the words that are used together: tough as steel.

Unfortunately, the way the phrase soft skills is normally used can be misleading.

You can find many lists on what makes a leader great and they are almost always different. You will find some overlap here and there but for the most part, you are going to decide which list is most accurate.
I must admit that they all will have something helpful for the reader. I have benefited from that myself.

I came across this quote that I believe captures the kind of mindset needed to make a difference in our world. Here it is: âRisk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. What do you think? Would you agree with my opening statement now that you've read the quote for yourself? Let me know your thoughts.
I believe our mindset has a lot to do with the success we experience in life.
It saddens me when I see and hear people finding all kinds of excuses why they can't do this and why they can't do that. They are stuck because they are unwilling to adopt a growth mindset. They would rather remain with their fixed mindset.
But if you are going to be a great leader, you must adopt a growth mindset aka an entrepreneurial mindset.
