‘A Folk Horror Tale’
In the latest chapter of his podcast series, John Galliano reveals his inspiration and the development of techniques used to create his ‘Artisanal’ 2021 collection and the film he conceived for its presentation.
Through the grammar of haute couture, the quest is expressed in the alternative notion of neo-alchemy: the search for authenticity through scientific transmutations of shapes and textures of familiar garments, realised through harmonious dialogue with the natural elements.

THE MEMORY OF...
With John Galliano
For his Spring Summer 2021 Co-Ed collection, Maison Margiela’s Creative Director John Galliano opens the doors to the world of the Tango and the societal values associated with it – community, interdependency and primal, instinctive connection. Heroic cutting, storied garments and iconic wardrobe pieces become the main characters in a three-act tale moving from a Victorian wedding, a procession to a dance marathon.
The designer illustrates how techniques developed in the Artisanal collection are artistically industrialized for ready-to-wear and the magic behind the numbers on the brand’s label.

THE MEMORY OF...

Maison Margiela AW19 'Artisanal' Co-ed Show
In the latest chapter of his podcast series, Maison Margiela’s Creative Director John Galliano further explores the theme of decadence. Reflecting on today’s culture of excess and the degeneration of social structures, he ponders on one’s need to reconnect and rely on one’s instinct. He talks about the language of consumerism and how it plays on our fetishistic impulse and, as a result, throughout his creative process. Projective filtrage, a new Artisanal technique, is developed to enhance the clichés of couture. Starting from his explorations of nomadic cutting, Mr. Galliano evolves his creative language with dresses and through new tailoring techniques.
