In front of a roaring crowd of 68,455, Atlanta United pulled off a stunning upset, edging out Inter Miami 2-1 in extra time to force a decisive Game 3 in their MLS playoff series. Fans packed the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, making it the fifth-largest postseason crowd in league history, and they were treated to a thrilling underdog win. Inter Miami, the seasonâs record-breaking top seed, now faces elimination after a nail-biting loss that saw Atlanta come alive in the closing minutes.
The game-winning goal came from Atlantaâs Xande Silva, who scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time, sending the stadium into a frenzy. Interim coach Rob Valentine, leading Atlanta after they squeezed into the playoffs as a wild card, said, âIt was everything I dreamed it would be, an unbelievable moment.â
Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender was understandably disappointed, saying, âIt stings anytime you lose a game in stoppage time. We had a good opportunity to take it in two games, but now our focus is on Game 3 at home.â
Despite the loss, Miamiâs coach Tata Martino remains confident, noting, âWe have the advantage of many high-caliber players who have been through more difficult situations. I am satisfied with how they played, but frustrated with the result.â Martino pointed out that while Miami dominated possession and played aggressively, Atlanta capitalized on their few chances, including Derrick Williamsâ equalizing header in the 58th minute.
Lionel Messi struggled to make an impact as Inter Miami fell to a 2-1 defeat against Atlanta United in the first round of the MLS Playoffs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, November 2. The Herons came into this match after a recent victory against the same team, but they couldnât carry that momentum forward.
One fan called the team a âgarbage low IQ team,â while another quipped about Messiâs performance, asking, âWhere Messi?â
The defeat ties the best-of-three series at 1-1, with the final game set for Saturday, November 10, at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. -
It's not the most exciting Messi storyline this morning, but a win is a win, and Messi is one more step closer ot an MLS title - and let's be honest, isn't anything else a failure?

Lionel Messi mania has swept across North America, and Toronto wasnât spared from the frenzy. For all the world, it looked like a head of state was holed up inside Hotel X, with police cruisers, motorcycles, and metal fences blocking off the area. Yet it wasnât a politician or royal figure at the centre of this security detail, but Messi himself.
Fans in fluorescent pink chanted his name, and when the Inter Miami bus rolled out with a police escort, the crowd ran after it like a scene straight out of Beatlemania. This circus has followed Messi since he joined Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2023 after 17 years at Barcelona, and Toronto FCâs home ground, BMO Field, was no different. Messi only played the final 29 minutes of the match, but his presence alone captivated the 30,217 spectators in attendance.

David Beckham's Inter Miami secured their latest piece of silverware on Wednesday night, with a 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew crowning them winners of the MLS Supporters' Shield. The win, powered by two goals from Lionel Messi and one from Luis SuĂĄrez, gave Miami the best regular-season record for the first time in the club's history.
The Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the top record over the regular season, adds another trophy to Miami's collection after their Leagues Cup triumph earlier in the year. Beckham, the clubâs owner, paid tribute to the squad, highlighting Messi's contributions once again as the Argentine continued his dazzling form with two goals.
"So proud to see our players lift the Supporters' Shield after a great win in Columbus," Beckham wrote on Instagram. "Another amazing achievement in the history of this football club and so happy to bring this trophy to the best fans in the League. Now we go again and onto the next one."
Messi opened the scoring late in the first half with a free-kick, followed by another goal just before halftime, giving Inter Miami a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break. However, the match quickly became a nail-biter when Columbus' Diego Rossi found the back of the net within a minute of the second half, narrowing the gap to 2-1.
Three minutes later, SuĂĄrez restored Miamiâs two-goal cushion, netting his 18th goal of the season. But Columbus wasnât done yet. Cucho Hernandez converted a penalty just after the hour mark, bringing Columbus within one goal once more. However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Rudy Camacho was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.
Columbus had one final chance to tie the game from the penalty spot, but Hernandezâs second attempt from 12 yards went wide with just five minutes remaining. That miss sealed Miamiâs 3-2 victory and the Eastern Conference crown.
Messi, ever focused, reminded everyone that thereâs still more to accomplish. "The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what's next," Messi said after the game. "The first round [of the playoffs] is three games, but then it's one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home."
With two more regular-season matches against Toronto and New England ahead, Inter Miami is looking to maintain momentum heading into the playoffs, where the ultimate goal is to lift the MLS Cup in December.
Despite their 3-2 win, Messi and his teammates weren't handed the trophy on the field. Instead, they reportedly celebrated privately in the locker room because the trophy was still in Columbus.
The real complication stems from the fact that none of Miamiâs supporter groups are officially part of the Independent Supporters Council, the body that governs the Shield. Without formal ISC membership, Inter Miamiâs Supporters' Shield win can't be fully recognized yet. Four groups have applied to join, but their approval could take weeks, adding uncertainty to when the Shield will officially be theirs.
Though they weren't presented the trophy after the Columbus win, Inter Miami may finally be able to showcase it to fans during their final home game of the season on October 20 against New England Revolution, assuming the ISC issue is resolved in time. For now, the clubâs claim to the Shield is in limbo, leaving fans eagerly waiting for a formal crowning moment

Messi has made a surprising venture into acting with his debut in the Argentine comedy-drama "Los Protectores" which follows three football agents navigating the challenges of the industry while trying to avoid bankruptcy. In Messi's scene, one of the agents proposes an absurd business deal where Messi would play for different Argentinian football clubs each day in alphabetical order, potentially extending this scheme worldwide.
Messi has voiced his frustration following Argentina's tumultuous Olympic soccer loss to Morocco on Wednesday. In a dramatic match, Argentina seemed to secure a 2-2 draw in the 106th minute, only to face a series of chaotic events.

Lionel Messi, with his legendary left foot making more noise than his quiet demeanor, delivered a heartfelt message to his fans after leading Argentina to the Copa America 2024 final. In his usual soft-spoken manner, he urged everyone to savor these fleeting moments."It's crazy what this group did, what the Argentine national team has been doing. After this, much more importance will be given to all the finals that I and the old group had to play in," Messi said following the match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. "We have to enjoy everything we are experiencing as a national team. What we have achieved is very difficult. We have to take advantage of it.""These are the last battles, and I am enjoying them to the fullest,"

"It's very clear to me that I was born like this because God chose me," Messi shared. "It was a gift he gave me. I tried to take advantage of it, I did everything possible to squeeze the most out of it. The truth is, although I did many things, I did nothing to become the player that I already was when I was little."
Advancement came for Argentina, but not without a struggle, in their tense match against Ecuador. Argentina opened the scoring when Lisandro Martinez headed in a pass from Alexis Mac Allister during the first half. However, Just when it seemed Argentina would maintain their lead, Kevin Rodriguez headed in a last-minute equalizer for Ecuador, forcing the game into a dramatic penalty shootout. During an interview on the Full Send Podcast, Smith described Messi as "one of the greatest of all time" and gave insight into what Messi is like off the pitch, saying:"Messi is fantastic. He doesn't do stuff like [acting in the trailer], so it's really interesting when you see somebody who is world class in the thing that they do, and then they get that little kid smile doing something [new]. We're doing okay."Bet-David revealed the Messi effect has already boosted his property value, stating: "So far right now, according to today's climate, I've already made $25 million of equity on the house I own."
