After being told for years that she would most likely never get pregnant, Justina and her husband Dan had finally come to terms with their reality. Needless to say, they were completely shocked and over the moon excited when they found out they were expecting their miracle baby boy, Carter.
Justina had a smooth and healthy pregnancy until 23 weeks, when things took a drastic and unexpected turn. Caused by an incompetent cervix, Justina delivered their son severely premature at only 24 weeks and two days, and their unexpected NICU journey began. They quickly got acquainted with the NICU life that was consumed by pumping breastmilk, beeping monitors and pure chaos. Despite the odds, Carter was doing everything to be expected from a 24 weeker, but Justina and her husband hadn't quite comprehended the severity of his preterm birth.
Things quickly changed on Carter's third day of life, and Justina and Dan were left with a devastating decision. Carter passed away peacefully in his Dad's arms that evening, taking a piece of his parents heart with them. Carter's parents have worked tirelessly to not only keep Carter's memory alive, but to honour his sweet life. From their devastating loss, Justina and Dan created Carters Cause, which is a foundation to help support other families who are walking similar journeys.
You can visit https://www.carterscause.org/ to find resources on the NICU, Infant Loss and so much more goodness, or find them on Instagram @carterscause. -
Shortly after Brittany delivered their son, her and her husband knew deep down that he had Down Syndrome. It took over 24 hours to receive the official diagnosis, bur in that time they experienced such a variety of feelings, which I think so many of us parents can relate to.
Since having sweet Henry, Brittany has added 'Down Syndrome advocate' to her many roles and she genuinely couldn't be happier.
What is it like receiving a completely unexpected diagnosis? How has society conditioned us to view people with disabilities? How are some easy ways to help our children deeply practice inclusion?
All things answered by this beautiful mama on today's episode!

If you're anything like me, you have heard the term 'doula' often, but never truly knew the ins and outs of the job. I've watched so many Moms share their experiences through pregnancy, labour and delivery while using the support of a doula, and every one of them has raved about it.
On today's episode, Lindsey comes on and shares her experience as a doula in Calgary, Alberta. She walks us through all the ins and outs of being a doula, and what you can expect if you hire one. We cover everything from how doulas support women during their pregnancy, all the way through to postpartum. -
At just 15 weeks pregnant, Tabitha started to experience symptoms that, in her gut, she knew weren't right. She was taken to the hospital multiple times but because she was still so early in her pregnancy, she was told that the symptoms she was experiencing were just normal pregnancy aches, pains, and sickness.
At just 22 weeks Tabitha was admitted into the hospital with severe preeclampsia. She was retaining 30lbs of fluid, her face was so swolen that her eyes were almost forced closed, her blood pressure was absolutely the light the roof, and she truly felt like she was going to die. She spent weeks on bedrest and monitored extremely carefully, as they were worried for both her and her sons life. She managed to keep her baby in for 3 weeks, and delivered him severely premature at just 25 weeks gestation.
Join us on todays episode as Tabitha shares what it felt like to go misdiagnosed for so long, what her symptoms of preeclampsia were, and her traumatic and fast delivery. -
Have you ever left a situation feeling awkward, uncomfortable, and maybe even disrespected when it comes to how others treat your kids? Whether it's at meal time expectations, how to discipline or the language you use with your kids... having and holding boundaries can be life changing!
I learned the importance of setting boundaries very early on in my motherhood journey.. Derek and I take a lot of pride in our parenting and have a tons of conversations about how we want our kids to be raised. But, something I found was that even though we had boundaries set and had talked about different scenarios, others (family, friends and even strangers) were overstepping and it often left me feeling overwhelmed and upset. The missing piece was HOLDING our boundaries and learning how to respectfully verbalize our expectations to others.
In this episode, Kristi gives a ton of great advice around how to have the necessary, and sometimes hard, conversations, how to hold our boundaries, when we should hold strong on our boundaries and when we can bend, and even walks us through some examples of having hard conversations.

In last weeks episode (ep. 31) we heard from Ariel, who is a surrogate and is passionate about educating others on what surrogacy entails. This week, I am so excited for you to hear from Angelina, a Mama who welcomed her twins via surrogacy. I have loved learning about surrogacy, and think it’s been so special to hear about surrogacy from both sides!
In today's episode we hear of Angelina's journey to motherhood. While it started off with IVF, losses, and ultimately, news that it is unsafe and life threatening for her to carry a baby, it also includes her story of creating their family through surrogacy.
Angelina shares about how she went about finding a surrogate, what it is like to watch another woman grow your babies, and the blessings that her surrogate, Shaylene, brought to her.
Let's go chat, mamas! -
I remember before I had my eldest baby, surrogacy was something I just kind of THOUGHT that I would do. The idea of being pregnant and bringing a baby into the world for someone who physically can't was something I knew would bring me so much joy.
Through todays conversation with Ariel, I learned that there is SO much that goes into surrogacy that isn't always thought or talked about!
How does a family member become matched with a surrogate? Who is it that utilizes surrogacy? What is the process of surrogacy like? How does it feel to birth a child that biologically and legally isn't yours? Do you get paid to be a surrogate? And perhaps the hardest realization of all, is that like any other pregnancy, loss and miscarriage are very real.
Ariel answers all of these questions and so much more as she shares her journey of welcoming 2, soon to be 3, surro-babies into the world!

Today's guest, Kim Vopni, is here to talk all about vaginas and a healthy pelvic floor.
Are you uncomfortable, yet? GOOD! We need to normalize these conversations!

SMA is a rare genetic neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness and atrophy. Babies muscles slowly deteriorate, causing low motor ability, troubles feeding and eventually, breathing. At just 5 weeks old, Lucy was diagnosed with Type 1, which is the most aggressive form of SMA. After learning of her diagnosis and being educated by their doctors, Lucy's family knew that the most effective option was for Lucy to receive the life saving medication Zolgezma. But, because it isn't yet approved in Canada, this drug costs 2.8 MILLION dollars. This weeks guest, Laura (Lucy's beautiful mama!) is sharing their story to raise awareness and advocate for SMA families.
There are other families here in Canada who are on the daunting journey of raising almost 3 million dollars so that their babies (who must get the treatment before their 2nd birthday) can also receive Zolgezma.
If you feel compelled, PLEASE visit the websites below to donate to babies who are fighting the timeline of this disease.

I think that it's safe to assume that as women, we have all felt shame around our body at one point or another.
Perhaps that shame came from our weight or shape, and its ability to do what we ask of it. Maybe it was caused by what we see in the media and how beauty is portrayed. Or maybe the shame stemmed from what others have said about the way our bodies look.
How do we achieve true self acceptance? How can we finally break through diet cultures harsh views and truly accept and resepct our bodies?
Logan Russell shares about her early struggles with self acceptance, and the breaking point that made her realize that her worth is not determined by her bodies size or weight. -
Something we hear so often is that couples go through IVF in order to have their kids. It seems like the more social media evolves, the more women/couples share their story’s. But what exactly does IVF entail? Who goes through IVF? What is the process like? How much does it cost? These are all questions that Kelsi and I sit down and chat about on today’s episode.

There has been a recent awakening of the racial injustices taking place. The Black Lives Matter Organization has been making big strides, but we still have so much work to do. As a mom, I know that it is my job to leave my children better than I am, and that inclusion, anti racism and acceptance starts in the home.
I'm so thankful for today's guest, Ima, who is coming on to share her personal experience in raising black children. We are going to be hearing about some of the racial injustices her and her husband, Marcus, have personally experienced, some of the fears they have around raising black children, the unjust treatment black mothers face within the healthcare system, the racist acts her children have already endured, and how we, as moms, can help shape our kids to be inclusive, anti racist and accepting of everyone.

Sonya’s journey to mamahood did not come easy. Her and her husband spent years battling infertility. After completing a round of IVF, they were left feeling defeated, and broken hearted. They were left with a choice: do they start all over, both physically and financially, for another round of IVF?
With adoption always being on Sonya’s heart, and a plan in her and Drew’s parenthood journey, now felt like the perfect time for them to dive in and start the process of adopting their first child.
What are some common fears adoptive parents experience? What are the logistics of adoption? How do you choose who’s baby you will soon get to call your own? Can you really love a baby that you didn’t grow in your own tummy?
These are all questions Sonya answers as we chat about her journey to becoming Jayce’s mama! -
There is an alarming amount of false information on the internet that has lead us to believe that women who exist in larger bodies are incapable of having a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
There is also an alarming amount of women who have had traumatic or negative experiences with healthcare providers, leaving them feeling anxious and uncomfortable to seek medical help.
This week we are hearing from Jen McLellan, host of The Plus Mommy Podcast and a plus size pregnancy and birth educator. She is on a mission to change the way healthcare providers see and treat women in large bodies, and help moms feel confident in their ability to carry and birth their babies.

BIRTH TRAUMA
I think it's safe to say that we all have a certain level of nervousness and fear when we are preparing to deliver our babies. But, we put our confidence and trust in our healthcare providers to do what is best and safest for us, and believe they have our best interest at hand. Are there women who have beautiful experiences while bringing their little babes into the world? Absolutely! But the reality is that there are a lot of moms who leave the hospital feeling violated, taken advantage of or simply in complete shock from what they just went through.
Today we are hearing from Taylor. A mom who sat in the NICU while her sons brain was closely monitored, and he was rigorously tested for brain damage. Her story isn't one any mama hopes for, but she knows that by sharing it, it can allow other moms to know their rights and learn when, and how, to advocate for themselves. -
Have you ever found yourself frustrated with your kids and saying things like "you know better!" or "you could put your shoes on by yourself yesterday!" I know I have.
On today’s episode we are learning from parent coach and expert, Myla Leinweber. What is restitution, and why is it important? How can we model it for our kids? And do our kids misbehave, or make mistakes? Myla covers all of these questions and gives us some incredible tools to improve our every day parenting, making it a little less chaotic, and a lot more joyful.
