  • You might remember a few months ago when registered nurse and Certified Aromatherapist, Holly Brandenberger (or @scienceofessentials as many of you may know her as over on Instagram), was on the show talking with us all about stress: the stress cycle, what stress actually is, how essential oils can help reduce stress and so much more. To this day it’s still one of our top most downloaded episodes, you can listen to it HERE!

Now, 5 months later, Holly is back for a second interview with us; this time unpacking and redefining the popular and oftentimes cringeworthy buzzword, “self-care”.

In 2020 “self-care” rose to become a 450 billion dollar industry and with the popularity and heavy bubble bath, chocolate, and netflix binging marketing that has come along with it, the true definition of self-care has become muddy and a bit lost. Holly is here to get us back on track with true self care so we can take care of ourselves far beyond spa days and Netflix.

    In this episode, Holly...

Unpacks the buzzword of “self-care” and all the common misconceptionsDefines what self-care really is (and what it’s not)Explains the absolute necessity of self-care and how it’s not a reward or something you need to earnShares 5 areas we can all (simply!) implement self care into every aspect of our livesPhysicalSocialMentalSpiritualEmotionalAnd more!

  • Our breath is one of our most powerful tools for healing, awareness, and even life expectancy.

We take about 25,000 breaths per day yet many of us have no idea the power our breath can hold when we focus on it and allow it to help us feel and heal trauma, anxiety, illness, and more.

Today I’m sitting down with breathwork facilitator and CEO of Pause Breathwork, Samantha Skelly to share with us the incredible healing power of something we all have free access to; our breath.

Years ago Samantha Skelly found herself at a very dark and painful place in her life, she was struggling with depression, chronic anxiety, an eating disorder, and completely out of touch with her body. She sought out a world-renowned healer in Bali (yes, the exact one in Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert) and he told her that her “brain was broken” and she needed to meditate.

When she arrived late to the meditation class, all that was left was a breathwork class. She left that class a completely different person and knew the world needed to know about and experience breathwork.

Samantha has since founded Pause Breathwork, the world’s leading breathwork facilitator and is on a mission to reduce human suffering by increasing human consciousness through the power of breathwork.

If you struggle with mental health, a physical health problem, or even just have a hard time meditating, I cannot encourage you enough to give this episode a listen. (It might just be one of my favorite episodes we’ve ever done!)

    In this episode we discuss:

    • 05:23 Sam’s story of struggling with an eating disorder, exercise addiction, and depression

    • 07:13 How the book, Eat, Pray, Love influenced Sam’s journey to healing and discovering breathwork

    • 08:24 Sam’s first breathwork class experience and how it changed her life forever

    • 10:52 What breathwork is and how it’s different from simply breathing

    • 11:20 The difference between breathwork and meditation

    • 15:40 The science behind breathwork; how and why it works

    • 19:00 Allowing breathwork to help access and trust your intuition

    • 21:49 The fascinating truth about the mind-body connection

    • 25:42 How emotions and traumatic experiences get trapped within the physical body

    • 30:19 Allowing breathwork to free the trauma stuck in our bodies

    • 37:18 The impact breathwork has on our physical health and life expectancy

    • 39:56 How to get started with breathwork and how to implement it into our daily lives

    • 45:18 A guided breathwork exercise from Sam!!

  • *Trigger warning*: This episode may be triggering for listeners who have battled or are currently battling any form of eating or body image disorders.

Have you ever hated your body? Or maybe you always have? We start receiving messages and comments about our bodies at a very young age. Those messages we receive, whether from media or the people in our lives directly or indirectly, imprint the way we think about and view ourselves and our bodies later on as pre-teens, teenagers, and adults. This has led to generations and generations of women struggling with eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and body hate.

Today I’m sitting down with Jenna Rammell, wife, mama, CEO of The Daily Essential Co., blogger at @jennaskitchen, a Presidential Diamond with Doterra Essential Oils, and a woman who has a story that so many can relate to; growing up hating her body and believing she was not enough.

Jenna joined me on this episode to bravely and openly share her personal journey from truly hating her body and being at war with it like so many of us are, to the place she’s at now with body acceptance, true self love and every step in between. She is extremely passionate about empowering women to love and believe in themselves and the message she wants everyone to know is, “you are easy to love!”

    In this episode we discuss:

    • 9:44 Jenna’s past of hating herself and constantly being at war with her body

    • 11:56 How our thoughts create our feelings which create our realities

    • 15:31 Using meditation to change your thoughts

    • 21:30 Navigating and responding to comments and projections from others

    • 28:30 How gratitude and present living will change your life

    • 31:22 Shifting from trying to achieve self worth through goals to total self love and acceptance

    • 36:51 Truly defining self love and self acceptance

    • 40:48 You are easy to love

    • 45:44 How to love others well while still honoring ourselves

    • 51:33 Changing the way we talk about and treat bodies for the next generation

This is a conversation that we ALL need to pull up a chair to and participate in. We have the power to change how we look at, talk about, treat, and love our bodies and in turn how the women around us and after us do the same.

  • If you’ve ever struggled with anxiety or have supported a loved one who struggles, then you know how difficult (understatement), lonely, scary, and even debilitating anxiety can be.

I know it can also often feel as though anxiety is our fate and destiny and is wrapped up in our identity.

Today’s guest, however, is here to encourage just the opposite; that anxiety does not define who we are and that there are holistic yet powerful tools that can ease our anxiety.

Dr. Ellen Vora, is a holistic psychiatrist who received her B.A. from Yale University and attended Columbia University medical school. She’s a board-certified psychiatrist, medical acupuncturist, and yoga teacher!

Ellen takes a functional medicine approach to mental health–considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root, and that’s exactly what we’re diving into on this episode of the Whimsy + Wellness podcast.

Whether you struggle with chronic anxiety, situational anxiety, or anywhere in-between, this interview with Dr. Ellen Vora is full of hope, encouragement, and even tools for healing.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • 00:00 Intro

    • 07:35 How our mental health is impacted by so much more than genetics

    • 08:56 Stress and anxiety: the difference and overlaps

    • 15:14 What is true and false anxiety?

    • 18:15 Is anxiety something we’re stuck with? Is it part of our identity?

    • 28:44 Asking “why” instead of applying bandages

    • 31:38 Listening to our bodies and getting to the root cause of our anxiety

    • 40:00 Which came first? Are our physical health problems always causing mental health problems or are mental health problems also leading to psychological health problems?

    • 44:00 Conquering the “How do I eat nutrient dense foods?” overwhelm

    • 49:05 How saying goodnight to our phones each night can help ease our anxiety

    • 50:18 Two anxiety triggers that we don’t want to talk about but should

    • 53:42 Changing our path from defensiveness to empowerment

  • Change happens to us all. Luckily, the human mind is built for navigating change, both the good and the bad - and we are more capable than we might realize at handling the unexpected changes that come our way. When we approach change with humility and openness, we can avoid letting the fear of the unknown prevent us from embracing necessary change and creating a more desirable - and even happier outcome.

In today’s episode, I am talking to Dr. Maya Shankar, cognitive behavioral scientist who served as a senior advisor in the Obama White House where she founded and served as the chair of the White House behavioral science team. Maya has a postdoctoral fellowship in Cognitive Neuroscience at Stanford, a Ph.D. from Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, and a BA from Yale. She is also the host, creator, and executive producer of the podcast: A Slight Change Of Plans.

During our incredible conversation, Dr. Maya talks all about change and how every single person experiences it, no matter how big or small. Dr. Maya shares her story about how a career-ending injury turned into an opportunity, why humans fear and avoid change, how to honor the inner knowing of making a necessary change, and what you can do to unlock the trepidation surrounding change. Plus, she also shares words of encouragement for us as we walk through our own unique journey of change.

  • There is no wrong way to “do crystals.” And your journey with crystals won’t look the same as the next person either --so don’t compare! The most important part of your crystal journey is to listen to your intuition and never stop learning because there is always something new to uncover, whether it’s which one you choose or how to use them and beyond!

As I continue to learn more about crystals, I thought it would be fun to share how to get started with crystals so you can start your journey, too.

In today’s episode, I’m going solo to talk about how to approach crystals as a total beginner (because I was one not that long ago). You’ll learn about what crystals are used for, how to use crystals, the benefits of crystals, plus the five best crystals to start with if you’re looking for guidance.

  • Are you ready to fall in love with your lymph system? Once you understand what it is and how it works, you’ll see why you should spend more time taking care of your lymphatic system if you want to stay healthy. When you know how to access your lymphatic system, you’re not only stepping into empowerment around your own self-care and taking back control of your health, but you’ll also start feeling better in your body.

In today’s episode, I’m talking to Lisa Gainsley, certified lymphedema therapist and manual lymphatic drainage practitioner who works postoperatively with cancer patients and preventatively with those looking to reduce inflammation and prevent illness. Lisa is also the author of The Book of Lymphs: Self-care Practices To Enhance Immunity, Health, and Beauty.

During our conversation, Lisa breaks down the lymphatic system, how it impacts your immune system (and your overall health), the benefits of healthy lymph nodes, and how you can support your lymphatic health using your own two hands. Lisa is also sharing her best self-care routine to take care of your lymphatic health and walking us through how to give yourself a lymphatic massage!

  • [PG-13 Subject Alert!!]

Why are sex and intimacy so uncomfortable to talk about? If we had more open and honest conversations about it, people might become more relaxed, open, and confident in their sexuality. Let this episode be your permission slip to normalize conversations about sex and intimacy so that we can remove the shame and give confidence back to women.

In today’s episode, I’m talking to Casey Zaruba, wife, entrepreneur, and mama of six, who holds space online for open and honest conversations about sex, intimacy, the female body, and all the taboo topics everyone avoids. Casey has created a safe space for women to get vulnerable and share sexual thoughts, experiences, and questions so they can reclaim confidence in themselves, in their marriage, and in the bedroom.

Casey and I are talking about all things sex and intimacy (consider skipping this episode if you listen with young children), including how to rediscover your confidence as a sexual woman, the importance of openly communicating with your partner, and how to have open conversations with your children about intimacy. Casey also shares a raw look at both the rewards and hardships of holding space for these conversations.

  • Do you struggle with sleep? Maybe it’s falling asleep, staying asleep, or even having bad dreams. Most adults (and even some children) experience at least one of these, and unfortunately, lack of sleep or even the quality of sleep we get can really lead to a lot of serious issues. That’s why essential oils can be a great tool for helping you wind down, reduce stress, and get that much-needed snooze!

In today’s episode, I’m going solo to talk about sleep, how it works, the scientific reasons behind the benefits of essential oils, and how they can help improve our sleep. Not only will I give you some of the top essential oil blends for sleep, but I’ll be answering common essential oil and sleep questions like, Do they really work? Will they really help? How should you use essential oils for sleep? Which one should I use? And so much more.

Friends, sleep is so important! So you don’t want to miss this episode.

  • What do you want your kids to say about your parenting? What legacy do you want to leave behind? Parenting can be a beautiful journey that leaves a lasting impact on generations. Parenting is also challenging and requires you to be courageous enough to dig deep, ask questions, and have those hard conversations at every stage of the journey. But if you approach parenting humanly and with compassion, you can create empathetic, generous humans that will change the world.

In today’s episode, I am talking with Jami Nato, mama of 4, wife, and serial entrepreneur whose light shines bright with her humor and wisdom. Jami and I are chatting all about parenthood and how to approach it with more gentleness, more grace, and more self-awareness so that we raise a new generation of compassionate humans.

During our conversation, Jami gives insight on the different seasons of parenthood, how to let go of parental shame, why radical honesty is so important as we raise empathetic children, the benefits of gentle parenting, plus the number one best thing you can do as a parent.
