  • Summertime and the living is easy!

Welcome back to my awesome tribe of brain explorers!

Speaking of exploring, I had an experience recently that reminded me of our brain that I am excited to share with you today.

Confession time…. I recently snuck away from you amazing listeners and I took a vacation.

My husband and I took an overseas trip for 2 weeks and it was fantastic.

But it did not start out fantastic unfortunately.

We had a series of unfortunate events when trying to get to our first destination.

All the horror stories of international travel that get lambasted in the movies?

Yep- you guessed it. Happened to us.

    Flights super delayed? Yep.

Crazy Karen’s causing a scene on the plane? Yep.

Changing planes when we were already part way down the runway?

If you said yes, you would be right.

So, what does this all have to do with the brain?

Well, I will give you a hint, the plane had sensors that were going haywire…

Tune in to hear the whole crazy story on today’s episode!

Join me as we dive into:

Trying to go with the flow on a crazy flight. All the different ways people react in a high, anxiety situation. What do out of control plane sensors have to do with our brains?

  • I can’t believe it!

Do you realize what we did together?

We have made it to 100 episodes!

I know, I know, “One Hundred Episodes” feels like an unreal number but it’s true.

We have been through thick and thin on this podcast for almost 2 years so today I want to celebrate our milestone by talking about milestones.

When this whole thing got going, I just had a dream.

I knew that I wanted to help more people but I have finite time in the day.

I wanted to scale up my reach and ramp up the number of people that I helped without sacrificing my family life balance along the way.

And so, I talked with my support team and we realized that launching a podcast as a source of free help for those around me seemed like a winner of an idea.

Now here we are, 2 years later with 100 episodes under our belts and thousands of episodes downloaded and listened to.

It’s quite remarkable what we have done together and I TRULY do mean together with you, my listeners.

There were certainly days where I was tired and I didn’t want to record a podcast but hearing the feedback from people saying how they found this or that episode helpful or insightful truly is a motivating force.

So, celebrate your milestones my fantastic people.

    Lean in to your accomplishments.

The world works so hard to make you feel and play so small but not today-today I want you to really think about everything that you have produced and accomplished in your journey through life!

    Join me for a celebration!

The dream that made this podcast a reality. The importance of recognizing and celebrating your milestones. How we can make this community grow even more.

  • Hello my amazing listeners!

I have recently returned from a trip abroad and while I was gone, there were a number of storms in my home region which produced severe winds and even tornados.

And that’s what I want to talk about today- tornados of thoughts if you will.

See many clients have been coming to me lately talking about how when their thoughts get to spiraling, it seems really difficult to get them to stop.

This feeling of endless thoughts swirling in our brains can quickly lead to anxiety or even panic attacks in some.

And for many, I find this is un-ending storm of thoughts frequently is a key cause of their burnout and overwhelm.

So, what do we do about our spiraling thoughts?

Well, there are different ways to approach it but today I want to focus on “Mindfulness.”

Mindfulness is a specific type of meditation and, before you say “But Julie! I don’t know how to meditate,” just know that it’s not necessarily the sit down, close your eyes and breathe deep for 10 minutes type of meditation.

Mindfulness is the idea of getting your way to focus back down to a single thought at a time to try to quiet those spiraling thoughts.

This episode I am going to teach you some basic mindfulness techniques which should help you start to tame those wild, endless thoughts!

    Join me to discuss:

The dangers of spiraling, stormy thoughts. How mindfulness can help you tame your storming brain. My 5 sense's technique to help you on your mindfulness journey.

  • Summer time is definitely here in Houston!

After going through my case study on Suzie, I really hope that you gained value going through some of the facets of a real-life client’s journey.

As I tried to illuminate in our last show, our journey through mental health and burnout recovery is different for everyone.

With those differences, it can often feel isolating.

We fear judgement for our mental health journey and we fear being a “burden” on others.

Something I tell my clients frequently is “Our perception becomes our projection.”

You see, we are our own worst critic and very often, we impose those thoughts as the perception of others.

    You know what I mean…

You see someone on the street and you think “I just know for sure they are judging the spot on my shirt where I spilled my drink” because WE ourselves are preoccupied with the spot on our shirt where we spilled a drink.

The vast majority of the time though, people are not judging you.

Because they are too busy judging themselves in turn.

We are all frequently in our own heads and not spending one thought judging others because we are too busy judging ourselves.

    Let’s discuss!

Join me as we dive into:

Why we spend so much time thinking about the judgement of others? How we subconsciously alter our behavior for the perceived judgement of others. Ways we can try to be mindful of our perceptions to alter our outcomes.

  • Oh, my goodness…here we are friends!

    Where you might ask?

Well, we are at the final episode of our case study on my client Suze and her amazing journey of healing from burnout.

We have talked about so many things but ultimately it really comes down to is understanding the things we can control and the things we cannot.

In this conclusion episode of my case study, we touch briefly on how these lessons in Suze’s journey apply to all of my listeners and how some of you might hear these things differently.

Men and Women ARE different and take different lessons to heart.

They also manifest their burdens differently and we need to understand how to help each other in our respective places and perspectives.

I share in this episode the things I needed from my partner in our marriage to make our journey successful and help me recover from motherhood induced burnout.

But the most important lesson I hope that you all take from this case study is this…

No one’s burnout recovery journey is the same as another so it’s about understanding how we can adapt these lessons to each of our own journeys.

This is why you need someone who can hear you and guide you.

This is, unfortunately, why too many people take an online program to help with burnout and fail to make material gains from it.

Everyone needs advice, tools and guidance individualize for their own personal burden.

If you find yourself resonating with some of the lessons, we have discussed in our case study, I really invite you to consider jumping on a free call with me to discover if I can help.

    Join me today for:

How men's mental health journey frequently differs from women. The most important lesson for starting to handle your burnout. Ways that I personally shifted the burdens I could control when running my business.

  • Hope you are ready for more burnout fighting knowledge friends!

We have covered a lot of things in the journey of my client Suzie.

As we worked through her time audits and the importance of wellness as well as focusing on her relationships, another really important factor in her recovery journey came up.

You see she would meet with me and do really well for a few days but then as always happens when you try to change for the better, life starts to try to move you back to the homeostasis it thought you were in before.

Now I want to take a moment to point something out- Suzie, if you haven’t guessed is a woman.

Some of the struggles she has had were a result of that- pressures of being the “perfect mom” and trying to perform at a high level in a male dominated field.

It made her feel like she had something to prove and so slowly but surely, she started pulling back on her boundaries.

But these problems are not unique to women.

Men also struggle with boundaries and it all goes back to a root cause.

    The perception of others.

Women its unconsciously more accepted for women to have boundaries or be child focused but they are often perceived as weak for having them or not ambitious enough.

With men, they are expected to be the martyrs- they can’t turn down any assignment or request no matter how bad their mental health is because they are just supposed to keep going and going and going.

When they do have a problem, it’s a “mid-life crisis” or just “a funk” that they are expected to work themselves out of.

But both men and women are deserving of relief from burnout and anxiety.

So, as you listen to this episode of Suzie’s journey, remember that “Suzie” can be any of us.

    Another dive into:

The importance of holding onto our boundaries as we start our burnout recovery. How the world reacts to and treats men and women's mental health journeys. Ways that Suzie and I regained control at work and established her professional boundaries without alienating people.

  • Can you believe how quickly April flew by?

Our case study through the journey of my client Suzie continues this week as we talk about the normalcy of the journey sometimes feeling like it was moving up and then down.

Suzie noticed that often she would be doing really well as we worked together but then something would come up and she would stumble a bit.

I often liken it to a spiral staircase with my clients.

Sometimes you are moving upward but because you still see the stairs straight ahead of you, it can feel like you aren’t progressing.

The journey through burnout can have that same sense of feeing like, “Hey I am doing the work but it just seems like I am continually looking at more work? What gives?”

Just when the thoughts of overwhelm started trying to creep back in Suzie’s mind, I make her stop and take care of herself.

I made her take time for her physical health and helped her rediscover some of her creativity.

Essentially, I reminded her that the path to healing isn’t just working with me but also stopping to relax and to rest.

Forcing yourself to take a step back and look around you rather than just at the wall of stairs climbing upward, you realize that you have elevated yourself even while seeming to be just starring forward.

Let’s keep moving through this real life client’s journey on the path from burnout to wholeness.

    Today's discussion includes:

Why "2 steps forward, 1 step back" is completely normal. Reconnecting Suzie's relationship to her wellness routines. How we started to heal Suzie's intimate and social relationships.

  • Happy to see you all again!

We are now in week 3 of my case study of an actual client’s journey with me to help her resolve her burnout and general dissatisfaction with life.

Last week, I walked you through the idea of a time audit so that you can really hone in on how you are spending the hours of your day.

Hopefully you were able to complete at least a baseline of that.

Did it surprise you? Did it make you think?

Hopefully it did one or both and really gave you some ideas to consider about spending your time differently.

That’s not the only reason I had you do it though.

See, what I found with Suzie and many of my clients is that when you are so overwhelmed with the stress and burnout of everything in your life, it can seem never-ending.

Doing the time audit helps should have helped you feel like it was something you could control- a quick win if you will to give you that amazing shot of Dopamine that helps reinforce the results of your journey.

When I did this exercise with Suzie, we found an unexpected trauma trigger point.

Suzie discovered that anytime she tried to rest, it brought back old feelings of when she had been told she was lazy and worthless.

She felt like she would never amount to anything even in the midst of record productivity at work and strong relationships at home.

It brought up the dreaded…. Imposter Syndrome.

Tune into today’s episode to continue on this amazing ride of healing from a real-life client!

Join me for part 3 of our series!

Important discoveries from our Time Audit. How we uncovered and started to resolve core memories driving Suzie's Imposter Syndrome. Using the "Ladder Thoughts" system to help process trauma.

  • Welcome back my amazing people!

We are continuing this week with Part 2 of my case study of my client, “Suzie.”

When you start therapy, there is lots of information gathering so that I can understand what diagnosis is appropriate for the client.

For Suzie, she just wanted to enjoy life again and not feel like she was just going through the motions.

Suzie was a rockstar at her job and used to enjoy what she was doing but somehow lost some of that spark and steam.

She also wanted to reinforce relationships with her family and make the most of the time she had with them.

At the end of the day, she wanted to feel like a “Whole Person” again and not be burdened with this constant feeling of stress and overwhelm.

After gathering all of that data, we started to formulate a gameplan.

Now it’s important when you are going through a process of change that you think about the sustainability of the change.

So when you are introducing those changes, instead of doing tons of changes all at once, look at one key shift in your thinking and really hone in on it.

With Suzie, our plan was to look first at was necessary and what could be shifted to someone else’s responsibility.

But that was just the start…you will need to tune in to find out the rest!

Join me as we continue with:

Why therapy starts with so many questions? Going through all of Suzie's various stress points to plan how to take control. The underrated power of a Time Audit.

  • Welcome back to all you fantastic people!

April is known as National Stress Awareness month so I wanted to do something a bit different.

As you know, we talk a lot about the brain on this show and how it reacts to the world around us.

I try to give you practical tips you can use to better manage your mind so that it does not manage you.

For this month though, I decided to do something a bit different and take you through some anonymous case studies of actual clients I have worked with and seen amazing transformations within.

So, I want to talk to you today about a client I will name Suzie.

Suzie is a professional woman performing at a high level and going places in a tough and demanding field.

In addition to her professional accolades, she is a wife and mother to a family that she loves very much and she wanted to be present for.

On paper, she had everything figured out except she felt tired, anxious and overwhelmed.

She would find that she was meeting deadlines but procrastinating and then overperforming at the last minute.

When she got home, she felt like she was not the best version of herself and found herself too drained to give what she wanted to her kids and husband.

This is where she started when she walked in my door…Listen to find how much better she is doing today after we worked together to overcome her feelings of burnout and imposter syndrome.

    Join me as we discuss:

What were the symptoms that brought Suzie to come and work with me? Suzie's concerns about handling the future of her career and family needs. The holistic foundational steps we started working on together to get her back on the right path.

  • Welcome back my amazing brain people!

We have made it past the whimsical April Fools Day!

Heaven knows my children enjoyed pranking both myself and my husband as they were home from school yesterday as part of their Easter break.

Though we have started a new month, my series on helping you understand and conquer your stress continues.

Last week we talked about one of the ways that chronic stress can affect you by examining the link between the stressed-out hippocampus and impaired decision making.

Next, we are going to look at what this does to you on an EMOTIONAL level.

At the same time that those logic and decision centers are sluggish and shrinking from your stress loads, your emotion centers spike to overdrive.

You may find yourself crying uncontrollably at seemingly minor problems.

Or perhaps you will try to mask it with manic, irrational happiness while you are secretly screaming inside.

Whatever it looks like for you, when your emotion centers are overstressed, it causes those trauma responses to flare up which then leads back to overstress in a spiraling cycle of unseen, internal stressors.

Add a few external stressors on top of that simmering inferno of internal stress and if we aren’t careful, we become a volcano of negative emotional energy.

Today we are going to talk about that cycle, assessing our stress loads and examining what coping methods work for me in my hope that it may spark some ideas for you.

Join me as we dive into:

Why am I so emotional when I am stressed? Identifying potential internal and external stressors. A few of my personal coping techniques I use to bring some stability back to my emotions.

  • The year is flying by way too fast my friends!

Spring is OFFICIALLY in the air along with copious amounts of pollen if you are in the South.

And just as mother nature is going to continually stress our sinuses for the next few months, I am going to continue our series we started last week talking about what stress does to our brain.

Did you know that stress physically alters your brain?

The stress hormones that your body releases named cortisol actually shrinks the hippocampus.

Why is that important you may ask?

Well, the hippocampus is responsible for two critical functions in your day-to-day life namely decision making and short-term memory.

This can lead to a cascade of stress where small decisions like what to have for dinner or what to wear for an occasion feel like huge life-altering decisions.

This is also why you start feeling like you are having more “brain farts” because again, that short-term memory is impaired.

When these become chronic, it leads to that dreaded burnout that you hear me talk so much about.

All is not lost though; today’s episode is dedicated to giving you some relief and help on this front.

We will go through some of the beginning steps that I take with my clients to help fight these chronic stressors.

This will include some real-world tools to employ at work to control the stress and some ways to relieve the stress after work.

And finally, I will give you the knowledge and awareness you need to recognize if you need some deeper help in a professional setting to control this aspect of your life.

Join me as we dive into:

The physiological effects of stress on the brain. Recognizing the signs & symptoms of chronic stress. Coping techniques you can start employing today to begin managing your stress.

  • Welcome back to my truly fantastic podcast listeners.

I want to be up front- today might be a bit heavier so if you need to take this episode in pieces, that’s perfectly ok.

Many of my clients lately have been coming to me with a common problem.

    And that is trauma.

With that trauma will come what are known as “trauma responses” which are mechanism built into the brain to help us cope and protect us from that excess trauma.

So often, the trauma is caused by some form of stress.

Stress as we have discussed before, comes in many varieties.

There might be work stress, relationship stress, financial stress, parenting stress- there are MANY different kinds and sources of stress.

Now the brain is incredibly resilient and has very strong mechanisms for dealing with stress from maybe one or two sources.

The problems start to arise when we have seemingly innumerable sources of stress, our stress management system becomes overstimulated and overwhelmed.

If we aren’t careful, our brain becomes over focused on stress and can cause our emotions and reality to feel out of control.

It’s a broad discussion with many facets and I am breaking this up in 2 parts.

This week we are going to focus on the physiology of stress and types of trauma responses to that stress.

Join me as we dive into:

Why am I feeling overwhelmed all the time? How does the brain physically react to stress? What types of trauma responses and symptoms do I need to watch for?

  • Hello again to my fantastic listener!

Spring is in the air and we are fully in the month of March.

Not to get too serious but we are living through a time with a great deal of anxiety.

Inflation has made us anxious about our budgets and finance.

Layoffs in certain sectors of the economy perhaps have some worried about the job market.

Whatever it may be, we consume this anxiety inducing media and it can very easily trigger our deep-rooted insecurities about our ability to cope with the changing environment and the future unknowns.

Remember our brain is trying to keep us alive so it has an entire hormonal system dedicated to worrying.

Sometimes though this system can throw too many “red flags” as it were and if we are not careful, we can develop insecurities about our ability to cope or perform our daily life.

I know what you are thinking…. ”Julie, you are a brain expert. SURELY you of all people don’t have insecurities.”

Sadly, yes dear listener, I am as human as you are and so, I too will get insecurities about my work from time to time.

This episode I want to take you through a case study of the thought process I went through to get through a major bout of insecurity that I had last year.

I had been asked to present at an executive training for a multi-billion-dollar client and it was a new industry and client group than I had worked with in the past.

I found myself having those feelings of insecurity and imposter syndrome creep up until I employed the process and techniques to overcome insecurities that I discuss in this episode.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the story.

    Come listen as we discuss:

What sorts of thoughts lead to deep-rooted insecurities? My personal fight with insecurity in 2023. The process and tools I teach my clients to use to overcome their insecurities and imposter syndrome.

  • Good day to my wonderful listeners!

We talk often about boundaries and limits on this podcast.

As humans we all have limits even though it can often be difficult to know what those are.

This week, a member of my amazing podcast editing team was going through some private emergencies and I wanted them to focus 100% on that.

They offered to get the work done because that's the kind of person they are but as a team we decided we wanted to give them all of their focus to take care of themselves and their family.

So today we are mixing things up!

We have a Retro-Rewind of one of my most popular episodes of the show.

Given that we have been talking about reframing our perceptions & removing toxicity from our lives, it felt like a PERFECT opportunity to revisit this episode all about confidence.

How are those related you ask? It's quite straightforward actually.

You cannot reframe your perceptions without the confidence in your ability to grow as a person.

And you cannot place boundaries around toxic people unless you feel empowered to protect yourself.

So if you are ready to take a trip back through memory lane of our fantastic brain journey together, let's move on with the episode!

    This episode we share:

    • Why Confidence is so important in our day-to-day mindset.

    • The correct way to view and think about our abilities and attributes.

    • 2 hacks to implement in your daily life to constantly grow and reinforce your confidence.

  • And just like that we are at the end of February!

I can’t believe how quickly this month has gone by.

I was recently able to get together with a good friend of mine and we were discussing my most recent podcast about how our experiences cloud our perceptions.

And we were chatting, we came to realize we both had some similar clouded experiences with toxic people that were in our same social circles.

We all will go through life encountering many different types and shades of toxic people.

Maybe it’s a horrible boss or a rude person at a store or terrible drivers on a road.

Naturally we can work to limit our exposure to those folks.

Often though, it can be people that we can’t easily limit in our lives.

Whether it is family, people at our common social groups like church or the gym or even people that we consider friends can all be toxic.

And our brains can take away some incredibly unhelpful thoughts if we are unprepared for what these toxic people can do to us.

So, I decided to help you with a primer to protect that precious brain of yours from these insidious and harmful effects of toxicity in our lives.

First, we are going to talk about what are some of the most common toxic behaviors.

This then will naturally give you some foresight into some of the most common types of toxic people.

And more importantly I am going to help you with some tools and ways to manage the influence of toxic people in our lives.

Come join me as we discuss the following:

What sorts of toxic behaviors should I be aware of? Who are the toxic people that I might encounter in my life? Tools you can use to control and limit the toxic people you may encounter.

  • Salutations to my lovely podcast listeners.

Have you ever had a conversation with someone where you are both recounting something that happened in the past, and you realize part way through the discussion, that you each have a completely different understanding of what happened?

You start to think, wait what? How in the world is that how you perceive that event?

What you have to remember is that our prior life experiences inform how our brain views and records events.

Sometimes we call this bias or perhaps clouded perceptions.

It’s really just the point of view that our brain has developed to protect us based on both the good and bad things that have happened in our lives up to that certain point.

Based on our experiences, it will inform three things when an event happens to us.

It alters how we think an event occurs, how we feel about that event and finally how we will react to this event in the future.

By way of an example, I am going to pick on my husband a bit in this episode but don’t worry it ends well.

    Small spoiler…

He once took a comment I made in a completely different way than I intended and he stopped buying me flowers…

    I know…. not cool.

But as I said, the story ends well so come have a listen to this week’s episode and find out all about how our perception of events changes our understanding and remembering of them.

Come join me as we discuss the following:

Why do our brains not see the same event in the same way? How my husband stopped buying me flowers? How to be mindful of our own biases and better understand our uncomfortable emotions?

  • Love is in the air my friends!

Happy Valentines Day for those of my listeners who celebrate it.

As I was considering what to share with you on this week, I started thinking about how our brain creates & responds to the feeling of “love.”

It got me thinking about my own whirlwind romance to my now husband.

And finally, it got me thinking about how this time can be difficult for those that may not currently be in a relationship.

Like so many things that our brain does, there is a primitive and developed brain aspect to love.

The primitive brain often feeds the feelings of love between two people in order to ensure survival and satisfy it’s need for social connection.

Those connections that our primitive brain forms with others are pivotal to creating and releasing vital hormones that increase our health and wellbeing while also lowering stress.

Something that gets overlooked in society though is that while romantic love can trigger many of these beneficial hormones, platonic love or child/parent love can also attain many of the same physiological benefits of romantic love.

There are also other things that can trigger the same parts of your brain and flood your body with these wellness and stress relief hormones.

So, as you consider your relationships this week, I truly hope this episode helps you examine all the love in your life and how much benefit it brings to you.

I am SO excited to talk about this with you today!

Come join the love train on today's episode:

The physiological functions & benefits of love in your brain. The different hormones associated with love. All the different ways you can activate these hormones even outside of romantic relationships.

  • Hello again to my fantastic podcast friends!

Can you believe it is February? January certainly seems to have flown by.

I really hope my series on understanding and dealing with Perfectionism has been helpful.

I wanted to pivot a bit this week to talk about some feelings that I have seen recently with my clients.

For many, we have just finished a month where we are setting and hopefully keeping some goals that can often trigger some limiting beliefs in our brain.

And perhaps we have been really successful at some goals but also maybe not as good at some others.

We can easily start to doubt ourselves in this moment and that doubt can accidentally trigger the protective part of our brains that is sometimes not as helpful as it thinks it is.

Remember, that primal part of our brain looks at goals and changes as a threat to our being because it literally views those changes as trying to alter the person you were to something new…

And even when that something new is objectively good, it can still be very scary to our primitive brain.

Anytime you stretch or get uncomfortable, you brain sometimes views it the same way as touching an open flame or something sharp- it immediately tries to make us pull back.

The trick in this moment is to engage the “forward thinking” part of your brain.

This is the part of the brain that CRAVES those big goals and ambitions.

It’s the part of the brain that does the big things like put a man on the moon even when the rest of our brain screams “What are you thinking! You can’t go to space!”

So today, we are going to dive into this topic of tricking your brain into helping you with those big ambitions and goals

Can’t wait for you to listen!

Come join me as we discuss the following:

Why does your brain try to shy away from your big goals? The Lizard Brain vs The Forward-Looking Brain. Ways to engage your Forward-Looking brain to work toward your big goals.

  • Alright my amazing people!

We are at the end of January and the final episode in my series on Perfectionism.

Rounding out this series, today we are going to talk about how Perfectionism impacts those of us with ADD or ADHD.

Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are very hot topics in the creator and mental health space.

ADD & ADHD is commonly diagnosed in Children and historically it was mostly diagnosed in young boys.

Generally speaking, it was understood to mean you were unable to focus, you procrastinated more and couldn’t sit still.

And these were the symptoms that most frequently manifested in young boys so it was easy to diagnose.

The medical field initially overlooked that this diagnosis manifests differently in young girls causing many girls to never get the help and coping skills they needed.

Now women are speaking out and the medical community has realized that in women and young girls, the symptoms are more anxiety related and struggle with motivation.

This has fueled the phenomenon known as “Adult Onset ADD” in women, generally speaking, but really this is just a result of it never being diagnosed properly in the first place.

Thankfully we have a much greater understanding now how these disorders affect both women and men and so I wanted to discuss how it intersects with the tendency towards perfectionism.

Disclaimer – while I am going to teach you some coping skills today and some things to be aware of, I am not diagnosing you over a podcast episode.

If you feel you may have undiagnosed ADD or ADHD, I strongly recommend you go speak with your doctor and potentially get the medical assistance you may need.

    On today's final Perfectionism episode:

How to potentially recognize ADD/ADHD in yourself? Perfectionism and ADD/ADHD. Simple coping technique and tools to help you manage your perfectionism with your ADD/ADHD.
