Season 3 of Who Cares Wins offers a triptych of episodes that all explore how our inner landscapes shape our outer landscapes. For this third episode, Lily spoke with Merlin Sheldrake about how the leading edge of science asks us to shake up our perspectives on reality and our place and possibilities within it. They also discuss different species' perspectives, more-than-human rights, cooperation, entanglement, and just how mysterious our cosmos still is.
Merlin Sheldrake is a biologist, writer, and speaker with a background in plant sciences, microbiology, ecology, and the history and philosophy of science. He received a Ph.D. in tropical ecology from Cambridge University for his work on underground fungal networks in tropical forests in Panama. His book, Entangled Life, is a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, won the Royal Society Book Prize and the Wainwright Prize. Merlinâs research ranges from fungal biology, to the history of Amazonian ethnobotany, to the relationship between sound and form in resonant systems. A keen brewer and fermenter, he is fascinated by the relationships that arise between humans and more-than-human organisms. He is a musician and performs on the piano and accordion.

We are delighted to share a few bonus episodes coming off the back of COP 27 in Egypt, Sharm El Sheikh. In this episode, Lily reflects on the COP27 outcomes - both positive and negative - with the pioneering activist Tzeporah Berman. Tzeporah co-founded Stand.Earth, led successful logging blockades in British Colombia; and more recently launched the Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty in 2021 which gained significant momentum in COP27. Lily and Tzeporah also discuss carbon pricing in Canada; the emotional toll and work of climate activism; and visions of the future.

âŠand just like that we have finished Series 2 of Who Cares Wins. This season sought to look at some of the social roots underneath the climate crisis - from womenâs equality to paternal rights; from Mother Earth to capitalism. What a journey it has been: from LA to the Atacama Desert⊠from the Amazon Rainforest to Afghanistan. Lily welcomed some incredible voices onto the podcast from Indigenous Activist Nemonte Nenquimo to Comedian Podcaster Deborah Frances White; political commentator Douglas Murray to International Climate Diplomat, Christiana Figueres. Join Lily as she looks back at highlights from each episode, teases out common - and differing - messages, and identifies key solutions voiced, to protect the planet we love.

Weâre rounding off our Extraordinary Women episodes..and almost the series⊠with one extremely special woman, Sonia Ramos.
Last week on the podcast Lily started her journey into the Atacama Desert where she spoke with Cristina Dorador, a Chilean microbiologist, who is now working on re-writing the Chilean constitutionâŠ
Cristina has worked closely with indigenous activists, including Sonia Ramos, to draw attention to the threats that lithium mining - booming because of the push for green tech - is having on those ecosystems.
As Sonia says: âCristinaâs work is the science of practiseâŠ.and herâs is the science of observation.â
Sonia walked across Chile multiple times to protest what is happening to her land.

Who Cares Wins Presents another Extraordinary Women, Zarifa Ghafari.
Zarifa - one of Afghanistanâs youngest female mayors to ever be elected, had to flee the country to Germany last year when the Taliban regained power. She's been tirelessly advocating for womenâs rights in a country with one of the highest gender gaps between men and women globally.
She is someone who has defied the odds to reach her leadership position but it has not been without sacrifice - she survived 4 assassination attempts, 1 which ultimately killed her Father, General Abdul Wasi Ghafari.
The music you will hear throughout is from The Zohra Orchestra : Afghanistanâs first all-female orchestra, named after the music goddess in Persian writings and who performed at Davos in 2017.

Today Lily wants to take a more radical turn on this seasonâs topic, and share her conversation with renowned political commentator and Author, Douglas Murray. He has written several best selling books - such as The Madness of Crowds, and his most recent book, The War on the West and has been critical of our cultureâs increasing focus on gender and race as a way to understand our history and ourselves - which he believes to be dividing our society.
Is it possible to recognise the issues of race, gender, class and how they connect with inequities today - whilst not fuelling further division in society - but rather focusing on solutions towards the fairer world so many of us want to see?
Who Cares Wins will be back in 2 weeks where we present the stories of some extraordinary women. In the meantime, weâll leave you feeling hopeful and inspired with weekly drops of Reasons to Be Optimistic. See you then.

Continuing our conversations on Fatherhood this week, Lily chats to Will McDonald from the Father's Institute. They describe themselves as the 'Father's think and do tank'. Will is so insightful into the reasons why having a male influence/ figure in a child's life will not only benefit the Father- child relationship but exponentially help the Mother as well; from helping with breastfeeding, giving equal paternity rights and for their own mental health and wellbeing. A fascinating listen!

A delightful conversation to share with you today with Podcast royalty, Chris Sweeney. So far in this series of Who Cares Wins, we've heard many different female perspectives and in these next few episodes I want to dig into the male experience - of being queer, of Fatherhood, acknowledging privilege and why equality will benefit us all..
Chris has taken the podcasting world by storm. Having founded the smash hit Homo Sapiens Podcast with Will Young, Chris Sweeney now hosts solo, inviting all conversations from the LGBTQ+ community, looking at the world from a queer perspective.

Lily speaks to two globally influential women today. First, Chelsea Clinton, born into a political dynasty, daughter of Bill and Hillary, and now global health advocate. They discuss the impact of climate change disaster on existing gender inequalities in the USA, before we hear from the wonderful Ugandan youth activist Vanessa Nakate- who's country is hugely impacted by the effects of climate change. In 2021 she was named on the Time100 list and appeared on the coverâŠ

This week we look at some of the barriers to girlâs equal access to education and family planning. Joining Lily is an inspirational young activist from the UK. Outraged by the idea that one in ten girls were missing out on their education due to 'Period Povertyâ, at the age of 17, Amika George started the #freePeriods Campaign. An activist, a change maker and author of 'Make it Happen', it's no surprise that she was named as one of Forbes 30 under 30 in the social impact category this year!
We also hear from Douce Namwezi N'ibmba in Central Africa who is helping educate women on family planning and making menstrual products accessible for women in East Africa through her work with Uwezo Africa.
